Chapter 18

Flamepaw's POV

"May all the cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Pointed Rock for a clan meeting!" Flamepaw woke to Stormstar's word echoing around the clearing. He sat up and padded from the den, going to sit next to his sister, Mousepaw. "What's going on?" He mewed, wrapping his tail around his paws.
"Dustkit and Frostkit are becoming apprentices!" Mousepaw sounded very enthusiastic about this. Since Dustkit and Frostkit's mother Dawnflower had died, they had suckled together, seeing as Sandfur had had plenty of milk. So, they were as close as littermates, even though Mousepaw and Flamepaw were almost two moons older. Dustkit stepped forward, his eyes glittering with excitement. "Dustkit, from this moment on, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Dustpaw."
"Dustpaw!" The clan called.
"Darksky will be your mentor." Stormstar turned to Darksky. "Darksky, you were not originally clan born, but you have proved your loyalty many times over. I hope you pass on your loyalty and skill to Dustpaw." Flamepaw remembered Bearnose saying that Stormstar had been mentor to Darksky, and the ony one who believed that she could learn the ways of the warrior code, other that Stripestar of course. Flamepaw jerked his attention back to the rock, Stormstar had started speaking again. "Frostkit, from this moment on, you shall be known as Frostpaw."
"Frostpaw!" Flamepaw called loudly, along with the clan.
"Fluffytail," Stormstar continued. Flamepaw felt a flicker of surprise. Frostpaw was going to become a medicine cat? "I know you will be an amazing mentor to Frostpaw, and that she will become a great medicine cat. I trust you to pass on all the knowledge and wisdom you got from Cloudpatch to Frostpaw." Fluffytail dipped her head and both pairs touched noses. Flamepaw bounded over to Frostpaw. "I didn't know you wanted to become medicine cat!" However, as he said it, he realized that it wasn't that weird. He remembered seeing her help Fluffytail, and she always seemed to soft for warrior life. She smiled and shuffled her paws. "Well, it felt right I guess." She said quietly. Flamepaw pressed his nose against her. "Of course."

Flamepaw crouched low, belly almost touching the ground. A plump mouse was nibbling on some seeds less than a foxtail in front of him. Creeping forward he leaped high into the air and, "Hey! Would you watch it?!" Flamepaw jerked awake. Thornpaw was glaring at him, shaking moss from his pelt. "Oh, sorry." Flamepaw felt his fur prickle. He always seemed to get on Thornpaw's bad side. Quickly he got to his paws and stretched, leaving the den. Outside the air was hot and windless. The sun blazed down relentlessly, making the ground hot and leaves dry and crunchy. Spotting Foxshade, Flamepaw bounded over the packed dirt to him. "Hi Foxshade! Are we going to do some battle training?"
"Not today." He replied, "But you can join us on border patrol if you like. We're just leaving." Foxshade flicked his tail to Sunflare and Ivytail who were waiting by the entrance to the camp. "Kay." Flamepaw decided that a patrol was more interesting that sitting around camp all day. "What border?"
"RockClan." spat Sunflare. "Those mangy troublemakers are more trouble than they're worth!" Flamepaw couldn't help but bristle at Sunflare's vicious temper. Glancing at Foxshade he saw that his fur was also standing on edge, which surprised his slightly. "Are we going or what?" Ivytail broke in, paws working the ground impatiently.
"Come on then." Sunflare led the way, tail still lashing.

Out in the forest it wasn't any better. The sun was pounding down on the forest. The undergrowth crackled with Greenleaf heat. Flamepaw followed the patrol towards the RockClan border. They arrived at the Thunderpath which separated their territory from RockClan's. However RockClan scent was on both sides of the border. Flamepaw bristled, opening his mouth to call for the patrol, but before he could make a sound something heavy came from behind and forced the air out of his lungs as he fell to the mossy ground. He drew in the scents but all he could smell was the acrid tang of the Thunderpath and the stick of RockClan. Twisting his neck he recognized Thunderclaw pinning him to the ground. With a jolt, Flamepaw relized his patrol had gotten to far ahead, they hadn't heard him gasp. Fruitlessly he struggled, mouth full of moss. "Keep still!" Thunderclaw hissed in his ear. "Or I'll claw your ears off." Even though Flamepaw highly doubted that he would do that, however mean RockClan was, he fell still. He didn't feel like this was the time to experiment. Instead he tried to get the moss out of his mouth so he could call out. "Is this the one?" He heard a voice whisper.
"Shut up Rivertail!" Thunderclaw spat back. "Besides, I found him. The reward is mine!" Flamepaw spat the last bit of moss out. Since the littermates were bickering so much, neither had heard him. Taking a deap breath he bellowed, "HELP! I'm by the border, some RockCla-" his voice was broke off by Thunderclaw stuffing moss back into his mouth. This time however, he was sure Foxshade and his patrol had heard. Thunderclaw let out a low growl. "You idiot! You will pay!" He yowled launching himself at Flamepaw, claws outstretched, eyes burning with anger.
