Chapter 14
"Run!" Yelped Foxshade. Greyear ran and he dashed after her. He leaped up and over the fence. He colapsed on the other side panting. "That was close." Panted Greyear, her eyes opened wide. Foxshade opened his mouth and drew in the scents around him. "Catmint!" He exclaimed. Greyear sniffed around the bushes and managed to locate it. "Here!" She mewed. She pulled up some stems. The patch was very small and half trampled, but would have to do. When they had gathered all the fresh, nice smelling leaves, the sun was setting over the orange sky. "We should probable sleep before heading back." Foxshade suggested. Greyear nodded in agreement. They settled in a small bush, reeking of twolegs.
Foxshade walked along the forest trail when he heard a wail of misery. Spinning round he ran towards the sound. Leafpetal was crouched over Eaglepaw. Fluffytail came over to her, "Greencough," she murmered. "Foxshade, Greyear, hurry!" She whispered to the sky. Icedrop came over to him, "Hurry Foxshade, Leafpetal and Sheepfluff are on their way to join us."
Foxshade jerked awake. The sun was rising, casting its yellow glow over the garden. He leaped up. "Greyear! Wake up!" He yowled. Greyear jerked awake.
"What?!" She exclaimed, looking desperately around for the the danger.
"Eaglepaw is dead, we have to hurry!" Foxshade turned and dashed through the garden towards the fence. "Hey, hold it! Eaglepaw's dead?" Greyear looked at him, confused.
"Yes, and we need to go back now!"
"How do you...what?" Greyear's ear flicked.
"I had a dream. And if we don't hurry, we will lose Leafpetal and Sheepfluff too!"
Greyear didn't ask again, but bounded to her feet. "Lets go then!" Together they ran through the forest, back towards the camp.
Foxshade smelt the sickness on the breeze as they entered the camp. Half the cats seemed to be coughing and the fresh-kill pile seemed terribly small. How much has it changed since we left? We were only gone two sunrises! He thought, horrified by the state of the camp and his clan. He and Greyear hurried to the medicine cat den, where Fluffytail was crouching over Sheepfluff, whose breathing was shallow and irregular. Fluffytail looked up at them as they entered. "Oh thank StarClan!" She ran over to them and grabbed the cat mint to give to Sheepfluff, but she pushed it away. "Its...too l-late." Sheepfluff gasped. "S-s-save it for some-someone else."
"Sheepfluff, no! Every cat is important!" Fluffytail protested.
"I'm already on my way...to join StarClan." Sheepfluff closed her eyes. Fluffytail looked at her, sadly. "It is her time..." she sighed. Foxshade looked on. Sheepfluff was easily the oldest cat in the clan. She was almost 100 moons. He wished her a a safe journey to StarClan.

The clan sat vigil for Sheepfluff that night. Foxshade was lying infront of the warrior den, sharing tongues with Greyear. Snowdust and Nightsoul lay together not far off. Without warning Sandfur barreled out of the nursery and almost trampled several cats on her way to the Fluffytail's den. She burst into the medicine cats den and Foxshade heard her yowl. "Dawnflower's kits are coming, but somethings gone wrong!" Her panic was clear. Fluffytail dashed out of the den after Sandfur, "What do you mean, gone wrong?"
"They started coming to quick and-and," Sandfur broke off panting slightly. Fluffytail pushed passed her and into the nursery.
Foxshade turned and saw Sunflare, lurking in the shdaows. Foxshade squinted his eyes. What was he doing? Sunflare turned, and disappeared into the bushes. Foxshade stood. He opened his mouth to scent the air, and stalked after Sunflare.
Out in the forest it was easier. Foxshade stalked quietly, following Sunflare's scent trail. It lead him to rhe twolegplace, where Sunflare's scent mixed with other cats. He was so preoccupied smelling the air that he barreled right into Sunflare. "What are you doing here?! Have you been following me?" Sunflare spat.
"Well, yes. But you sneak out of camp and come straight here. You might think you were up to something!" Foxshade fur was bristling. Surely he wasn't afraid of Sunflare?
Sunflare's fur began to lie flat again. "I have scented rouges on our territory several times, I just thought I might go check it out. You know, see that they aren't here again." Sunflare replied smoothly. Foxshade wasn't convinced, but decided to let it slide. "You know what? We should head back to camp." Foxshade suggested. Sunflare looked like he was about to refuse, but then thought the better of it. He nodded.
When they returned to camp the silence was broken by a single, heartbroken, wail. Foxshade barged into camp. "Whats going on?"
"Dawnflower died giving birth." Greyear meowed.
"What?" Foxshade gasped. "No!" He ran forward. Dawnflower's limp shape had been carried to the center of the camp so they could sit vigil. Sandfur, Stripestar and Ivytail all crouched around her, heads bowed. Fluffytail was trying to convince Sandfur to leave her. "Sandfur, the kits need you. Not only your kits, but Dawnflower's kits too!" Fluffytail meowed, desperately.
"Dustkit and Frostkit." Whispered Sandfur her eyes dull. "Thats the last thing she said."
"You can't let her kits die." Fluffytail meowed softly. Sandfur bowed her head, but stood up to go back to the nursery. Fluffytail moved to Stripestar. "You must name a new deputy by moonhigh." She reminded him gently.
Stripestar nodded. "I know." He closed his eyes.
"May all the cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the pointed rock for a clan meeting!" Stripestar called, voice cracked with grief. Slowly the cats gathered around the rock. "I say these words before the body of Dawnflower so her spirit will hear and aprove of my choice. Stormwind will be the new deputy of OakClan." Stormwind dipped his head respectfully "I promise to try my best."
So many deaths lately!
