Chapter 2
Featherkit pressed against the woven wall as Darksky swept into the nursery. She could sense agitation flooding off the warrior in waves. Darksky walked straight past the kits and began talking with Greyear and Flowermist. "Wolfkit! Redkit, Featherkit!" Called Greyear. "Come here all of you."
Featherkit bounded over obediently. Wolfkit and Redkit however were still scuffling about fighting.
"Wolfkit! Redkit! Get over here!" Snapped Greyear irritably and the two toms scuffled over to join Featherkit.
"We are preparing, in case the rouges try to attack our camp." Darksky told them. "If they do, you must be prepared. For now, you are going to the elders den."
Featherkit exchanged a worried look with Ashkit. Redkit and Rainkit looked unconcerned, even annoyed at having to leave the nursery. Wolfkit simply looked confused. "Are the rouges gonna attack us?" He asked.
"Hopefully not, but we have to be prepared for everything." Darksky replied, her black pelt slightly ruffled. "Come now kits." She swept from the den.
Greyear nudged them from behind. "Go on." She encouraged.
Featherkit left the nursery and followed Darksky to the elders den. Inside, Bearnose was asleep while Leafpetal and Ivytail were sharing tongues. "Hello kits." Greeted Leafpetal lightly. Her once sleek fur was patchy and she had scars from the great battle. Darksky quickly explained what was going. "They're welcome." Purred Ivytail gently.
"Ok, kits! You all stay here in this nest," Darksky paused to paw at a mossy nest at the very back of the elders den. "And I don't want to here a word that you've been miss behaving." She swept from the den. Featherkit watched her black tail sweep out of the den. "If you ask politely, I'm sure Bearnose will tell you a story or two." Greyear whispered to Featherkit and Wolfkit before following Darksky from the den.
Wolfkit scrambled over to Bearnose. "Can you tell us a story? Please?"
"A story? Well, there is one story about a brave couple of kits and a very vicious fox..."
Featherkit was nudged awake by Ashkit. "Whasoingon?" She mumbled.
"Somethings wrong. Very wrong." He whispered urgently, his crystal blue eyes wide and greyish fur on end.
Featherkit shook herself awake. "What?" She had never seen Ashkit look so frightened.
"Come." He whispered, gesturing out. "Wolfkit is already out there."
Featherkit slipped silently out. The whole clan, even the elders, were gathered around the High Ledge. Featherkit followed Ashkit around the outside of the camp in the shadows to a small ledge where Wolfkit was perched. The eerie light of the moon shone down on the camp casting long, spooky shadows. Stormstar sat attop the rock looking very solemn, and, was it frightened? "I have grave news." He began to the restless crowd. "We lost against the rouges." Murmurs of surprise ran through the camp. Stormstar gestured to Foxshade who leaped up onto the rock. His fur was matted with blood and he was limping. "We didn't just loose, they destroyed us." He mewed, shame on his face. "And they left a message. They said; we'll give you a moon to clear out, if you're not gone, we'll make you leave."
More murmurs. "A moon?" The high, stressed voice of Silverdrop, who was actually Featherkit, Wolfkit and Redkit's older sister, echoed across the camp. "What are we going to do?"
"We can't leave!" Mousenose called.
"We will try to fight them, but they outnumber us one to ten." Stormstar said gravely. "There is a very real reality that we might need to leave. For now we will increase the patrols, start training for battle. Everybody must be prepared."
