✧ Part 1 | Reprisal ✧
Prompt | Write about a cat witnessing the traumatic death of a loved one, and the extreme lengths he/she will go through to avenge them.
Word Count | 4500
The skeletal trees ran tall, their branches so bare, their leaves could be counted by anyone who passed by. The base of the trees seemed to be buried under pools of rusty copper leaves, which became animated when a breeze blew. The leaves fluttered in the breeze, dancing and pirouetting around the tree trunks to their own melodic frolicking.
Two cats rested beneath an oak tree, their muzzles pressed close together. The tom, a silver cat with black stripes, gave the other cat a lick affectionately. The she-cat, a brown tabby, returned the gesture with a purr.
"Have you heard about the Justice Seekers killing an EtherealClan cat just because they think his name is ridiculous?" the tom asked, chuckling in amusement. "His name was Fluffycloud. He was a senior warrior."
"Seriously? That's awful!" the she-cat gasped. "They are really messed up."
"I want to show you something, Crescentwing," the tom mewed, flicking his tail towards the she-cat.
"What is it?" Crescentwing asked, her eyes glinting in amusement. "It better be good, Runninggale."
"Better than anything I know in the world," Runninggale promised, nudging Crescentwing.
"All right," Crescentwing smiled, running after Runninggale. "You know I can't keep up with your speed."
Runninggale had broken into a sprint, his paws soaring across the dusty brown grass. A soft whoosh was heard whenever Runninggale passed. "I know."
The two cats halted in front of a flower field, every flower seemingly shrivelled and wilted from the cold. Runninggale sat down and beckoned Crescentwing to sit beside him.
"See this field?" Runninggale pointed to the flower field with his tail, his voice soft.
"Yes. It has suffered from land's hibernation," Crescentwing sighed, placing a paw on a crisp, rusty brown daisy. "I hope leaf-fall will pass swiftly with leaf-bare, so the land may recover."
"You are a kind cat, Crescentwing. That is a quality I cherish very much. Look closer - what do you see?" Runninggale mewed, using his paws to push away the dead flowers, revealing a snowy white flower. The flower was covered in frosted dew, but stood strong against the unforgiving chill.
"It's still alive," Crescentwing breathed, marvelling at the flower. Its white petals were curled, giving it a gentler appearance. Its delicate green stem was decorated with tiny shards of frost, but it never faltered and gave in to the cold.
"You are like this flower - no matter the odds, you will stand strong, and continue to live on. Even when everyone thinks you can't make it happen, you will always prove them wrong in the end," Runninggale purred. He picked the flower between his teeth and locked his blue eyes with Crescentwing's amber ones.
"W-what are you trying to say?" Crescentwing breathed nervously, staring deeply into Runninggale's eyes.
"You are everything to me, Crescentwing. As I came to know you more and more everyday, I realised I want you by my side every single day. I love your kindness, your smile," Runninggale paused, smiling nervously. "I love you."
Crescentwing inhaled sharply, her jaws open wide in surprise. She froze, her words seemingly lost in her surprise. She could vaguely hear her heart pounding loudly against her chest as Runninggale spoke his next words.
"Will you be my mate?"
Runninggale held out the flower in his jaws, his eyes hopeful. Overwhelmed with immense joy, Crescentwing pounced on him. "Yes!"
She nuzzled him affectionately. She could see that Runninggale truly loved her, and she returned that feeling. "I love you."
She was broken from her daze when she felt sharp claws digging into her shoulders, throwing her off. She yelped in pain as she was flung onto the ground. Groaning, she pushed herself up and adjusted her blurry vision. What's going on?
Crescentwing immediately panicked, wondering if Runninggale was safe. Her eyes searched for her mate, and located him easily. He surrounded by five cats, who closed in on him, their stance aggressive and unforgiving.
"Runninggale!" Crescentwing yowled, sprinting towards her mate. The brown tabby felt fear gripping at her heart as she caught Runninggale's eyes.
"Crescentwing! Don't come any closer," the silver tabby pleaded, shaking his head. His loving eyes became clouded with fear. Justice Seekers, he mouthed.
Crescentwing halted in her tracks, her eyes wide in fear. Wherever the Justice Seekers went, it never brought good news.
The Justice Seekers were five cats trained to ensure peace between the two Clans of the Forest of Eon. However, some moons ago, they had lost sight in their purpose, and began murdering anyone they thought do not deserve to live.
"You have committed a grave sin, EtherealClan cat," the silver-and-white tabby tom said, his icy blue gaze resting unforgivingly on Runninggale.
Crescentwing recognised the tabby as the leader of the Justice Seekers, Alpha. She slowly identified the rest of the Justice Seekers: Blade, a mottled brown tom with amber eyes as piercing as his claws. Vixen, a russet-furred she-cat with cunning amber eyes, and the only she-cat in the Justice Seekers. Thorn, a mottled dark grey tom with dark green eyes. Fang, a cream-coloured tom with golden and white patches, and green eyes; the youngest member.
She was terrified, for she had heard stories of Justice Seekers bringing terror throughout the two Clans. They were the reason why there were no elders, and had no need of medicine cats. Shoving aside her fear, she stood straighter. "Let him go."
"Look, Alpha. This EtherealClan cat thinks she can order us around," Vixen purred, lashing her feathery tail. Her cunning eyes flashed in amusement.
"No one orders the Justice Seekers," Alpha growled lowly, his stance aggressive. "We are those who seek justice. So witness as we serve justice and eradicate this cat from existence."
"Prepare to face oblivion!" Blade growled, unsheathing his claws. Rumours spoke of Blade's legendary claws; they are so sharp, they can slice through thick branches with ease.
Horrified, Crescentwing's fear evaporated and became determination. Her tawny figure looked like a blur as she sprinted towards Runninggale. Her claws were unsheathed, and her teeth bared.
Only an obstacle blocked her from saving her mate. A grey figure rammed into Crescentwing, barrelling her away. The brown tabby gave out a yelp in surprise, digging her claws into the ground to prevent herself from falling. "Do not get in the way of justice, EtherealClan cat."
Crescentwing recognised the grey figure as Thorn. Scowling, she lashed her tail. "He did nothing wrong! Why are you trying to kill him?"
"He harmed an innocent plant, and allowed its life to go to waste. Therefore, he must face oblivion!" Fang declared, his youthful eyes flashing with passion.
Crescentwing gaped at his reasoning. That makes absolutely no sense! What are they thinking? They must be seriously messed up.
"Let go of him!" Crescentwing snarled, pouncing on Thorn, snapping at his neck. Thorn pushed her off easily, and Fang held her down by grabbing her scruff forcefully, yanking her away from his comrades.
Twisting and swiping, Crescentwing tried everything she could to escape from Fang's death grip on her scruff. Is that why he's named Fang?
The she-cat yowled in anguish and pain as she watched Blade run his claws into Runninggale's belly. Runninggale's agonised yowls pierced through the air and into Crescentwing's heart.
"No..." Crescentwing struggled to hold back her tears, attempting to lunge at Blade.
Miraculously, she escaped from Fang's jaws after continuous attempts. She dodged Thorn's claws as he attempted to hold her down. She darted towards Blade, her eyes burning with intense fury. "Get your claws off my mate!"
Before she could sink her claws into Blade's shoulder, she felt a set of claws digging into her back, shoving her onto the ground. "Calm down, cat."
She twisted her head and locked her furious amber eyes with Alpha's icy blue ones. "Get off me!"
"This one is feisty. I like her," Vixen purred, winking at Crescentwing. Crescentwing glared at her in disgust.
"Blade," Alpha meowed, nodding at him.
Blade gave him a crooked grin. "With pleasure, Alpha." Blade continued his slow torture on Runninggale, his victim's yowls of pain seemingly fuelling him to continue.
"No!" Crescentwing's eyes could no longer hold back her overflowing tears. "Runninggale!"
Runninggale turned his head painfully to face Crescentwing. "I-I love you, Crescentwing."
Blade silenced the silver tabby with a swipe at his neck, chuckling with glee as life seeped away from Runninggale's blue eyes.
Crescentwing watched helplessly as Runninggale's bright blue eyes dulled as he exhaled his last breath. I love you.
Time paused, and whirled around the brown tabby she-cat. She felt a tremendous load falling on her, and her heart felt stabbed with a thousand claws, which tore it into shreads.
She could vaguely make out the outlines of the Justice Seekers as their malicious laughter soured the air, making it hard for her to breathe. Her amber eyes rested on her deceased mate, his last words flashing in her head. I love you.
His bright blue eyes haunted her mind. She dug her claws into the ground as she felt Alpha's claws withdraw from her back.
Vengeance.
Revenge was fresh in her mind, and it was the only thing that pieced her heart together, crystallising a shield around it. Her anguished tears dried from her eyes, replaced by determination and hate.
Vengeance.
Crescentwing stood up shakily, ignoring blood rolling down her back. Her eyes hardened and looked up at Alpha. Her mind was a sea of an abyss of anguish.
"Justice will prevail!" the Justice Seekers yowled harmoniously, turning their backs on Crescentwing, leaving her with her deceased mate.
"What have I done to deserve this, EonClan? Why must you do this to him?" Crescentwing whispered, lowing her head in sorrow.
I love you.
The brown tabby dragged herself towards Runninggale, and glanced at him lovingly. I will avenge you. That, I promise on my life.
Justice will prevail.
"It has been countless moons, Crescentwing," a cream-coloured she-cat said softly. "Has your anger not calmed?"
"It is why it has been countless moons that my anger grows, Honeycreek. They are the reason why I am without a mate... without my happiness," Crescentwing's meow was hard with grief, for she had never given up on seeking revenge on the Justice Seekers.
"Do you want me to get Havenstar to sooth your anger?" Honeycreek questioned, her soft amber gaze studying her friend.
"No," Crescentwing exhaled slowly. "I want to feel this emotion. It is what keeps my thirst for vengeance going strong."
"If it is what you desire," Honeycreek sighed, shaking her head in disapproval. "Runninggale wouldn't want your heart to be filled with such intense hate, Crescentwing. He would want you to move on."
"It is only when I avenge him, I will move on, knowing that his assailants are brought to justice," Crescentwing spat, slashing at a tree trunk.
Honeycreek sighed, eying the huge dent Crescentwing had left on the tree trunk. "I'm worried for you, my friend. You used to be so happy."
"I was, until they destroyed it," Crescentwing hissed, slashing at the tree trunk once more.
"Do you really think killing them will solve everything? You'll have to live with the guilt forever! Please consider what you're doing," Honeycreek pleaded. "I don't want you to get killed."
"I won't. Nothing else matters than killing those fox-hearts!" Crescentwing insisted.
Slash.
The tree fell, slamming onto the ground. It was laid, tattered and torn by a fury of claws. The fallen tree revealed a tall mountain. Crescentwing glanced up at the mountain, her hateful eyes fixated on it. "The Justice Seekers reside there, Honeycreek. I will go there."
Honeycreek gasped and shook her head in denial. "You can't! Those mountains are deadly. Why do you think they chose to live there?"
"Honeycreek," Crescentwing stared at her friend's worried gaze. "If I don't make it back, keep in mind that I will be happy... happy with Runninggale."
"Wait!" Honeycreek yowled, her voice laced with worry. Ignoring her, Crescentwing darted away swiftly, her target location fresh in her mind.
Vengeance.
As she ran towards the mountain, she was only focused on one objective - to kill all Justice Seekers. They will pay dearly for taking Runninggale away from me, she thought bitterly.
Crescentwing halted beneath the mountain, tasting the air. She scented the Justice Seekers nearby, and swiftly hid in a bush. She crouched down and raked her amber gaze around her, trying to spot any signs of the Justice Seekers.
Her nose twitched when a breeze blew by. Thorn and Fang, she thought, scowling. No matter how faint their scent was, she could easily pick them out - she would never forget the day they played a part in Runninggale's death.
Crescentwing smirked when she thought of Fang, the youngest member of the Justice Seekers. She had recently bumped into him while he was alone, patrolling around the Forest of Eon and had cunningly tricked him into telling her the location of the Justice Seekers' hideout.
So, he wasn't lying when he said his home is in the mountains, Crescentwing pondered, her whiskers twitching in slight amusement. So gullible.
Crescentwing was ready to set her plan into action. A second breeze blew by, ruffling her fur slightly. She noticed the tranquility of the mountains contrasted the Justice Seekers' brutality. How ironic, Crescentwing scoffed inwardly.
She watched silently as Thorn and Fang skirted the forest and started climbing up the mountain. She glanced up at the sky and noticed that it was getting dark. Perfect, she thought.
Crescentwing hopped out of the bush, and padded towards the mountain. As she neared, she felt heat radiating towards her, but shook off her doubts. She could vaguely make out the silhouettes of Thorn and Fang before they disappeared completely from her sight.
She waited beneath the mountain patiently, waiting for more darkness to set in. She could easily pick up Thorn's and Fang's trail, and need not worry about losing her way.
With only the stars and the moon for light, the darkness was almost complete. The night sky was now of a charcoal hue, and the leaf-fall breeze was cold.
Crescentwing could no longer hear birds chirping merrily, nor hear mice scurrying around on the forest floor. Instead, chirps of crickets sang the nighttime melody, creating a rare serenity Crescentwing rarely experienced.
However, her mood immediately soured when her mind drifted to the thoughts of the Justice Seekers. They do not deserve to live in such a peaceful land, she thought to herself, feeling bitter.
Digging her claws into the rocks of the mountain, she pushed herself up. Glancing up, she noticed that the rocky mountain brooded and loomed over her. It will be a long climb, but I can do this, Crescentwing reassured herself, inching upwards.
A gentle breeze touched her, carrying the scent of Thorn and Fang. She felt determination burn throughout her body as she carried on upwards.
When the scent trail ended, Crescentwing noticed a cave. She could vaguely smell the Justice Seekers as she tasted the air.
Vengeance.
Soft snores indicated that they were asleep. However, Crescentwing knew that one of them would be awake, guarding the others while they sleep. She peered into the cave, squinting her eyes to make out the outlines of the Justice Seekers.
Alpha and Blade were sprawled on the floor side by side, sound asleep. Thorn and Fang were diagonally across them, with Fang snoring the loudest. Vixen must be the one on guard duty tonight, Crescentwing thought.
A plan to get rid of Vixen slowly pieced itself together in her mind, and she was ready to put it in action. She was well aware that Vixen was the smartest, and the most cunning of the Justice Seekers, so she had to ensure that her plan will not fail.
Tasting the air, she detected Vixen's position. She was at the farthest end of the cave, hiding in the shadows and away from peering eyes. Smart, indeed, Crescentwing thought.
Scanning her surroundings, Crescentwing climbed above the cave quietly. She made sure to stay as low as possible, so that the breeze would not carry her scent. Since the mountain was filled with rocks, she used it to her advantage, pushing a few downwards, and crouched down to blend in with the rocks with her dark pelt.
Crescentwing heard Vixen rushing out to see what had caused the movement of the rocks and peered from above, careful not to move any rocks accidentally.
Grabbing a rock with her tail, she flung it over her head as far as possible. When the rock dropped onto the ground, Vixen immediately darted towards the fallen rock, leaving the cave unprotected.
Well, that was certainly easier than expected, Crescentwing thought. The brown tabby crept into the cave, and let her cold amber gaze rake her surroundings.
Vengeance.
She slowly inched towards Fang and shook her head. Such a young, gullible mouse-brain. It's a pity you have to die so soon. But your loyalty is led astray, and you stand in the way of my revenge.
She turned her attention to Thorn and scowled at his sleeping figure. You attacked me first, so it's only right if you die alongside Fang.
Unsheathing her crescent-shaped claws, she slit Fang's and Thorn's throats at the same time. They let out a gasp, coughing and choking, only to look up and see that their assailant was Crescentwing.
"You..." Fang rasped, his eyes wide.
"Shh..." Crescentwing hushed him, her eyes glinting with malice. "Rest now."
Crescentwing watched with satisfaction as life faded from the two toms' eyes. With that, Fang and Thorn were dead. By then, the commotion had awoken Alpha and Blade. Before they could react, Crescentwing had her claws positioned at Blade's throat.
"You were the one who killed my mate," Crescentwing snarled. "You deserve to die. As a matter of fact, you don't even deserve a slow death."
Alpha lunged at Crescentwing, but she slit Blade's throat before either toms could do anything. Blade gasped, his legs collapsing under him. He seemed to be struggling to open his eyes, but he had already lost too much blood to be saved.
"No! You killed my comrades!" Alpha yowled in horror. "This isn't possible! We've trained with EonClan for countless moons. We cannot be defeated by a mere EtherealClan cat!"
"Alpha, the leader of the Justice Seekers," Crescentwing spat, circling him. "Together, you are formidable, but apart, you are nothing. I've been waiting for the day where I avenge my mate's death."
"But how?" Alpha growled, lashing his tail. "We are the Justice Seekers! Trained to be the best of the best!"
"Every detail in my plan was carefully laid out - it is practically flawless," Crescentwing purred, smirking. "As a team, you are able to work efficiently with your different talents. However, killing them off one by one causes you to be vulnerable, because your strong point isn't combat - it's leadership."
Alpha's powerful demeanor faltered, giving Crescentwing an opening to attack.
I love you.
"I will avenge Runninggale!" Crescentwing yowled, pouncing on Alpha.
"Get off me, fleabag!" Alpha snarled, twisting his head to snap at the brown tabby she-cat.
"Alpha!" Vixen gasped. The russet-furred she-cat had returned from her investigation, and realised she had been tricked. "Get off him!"
As Vixen started towards Alpha, the silver-and-white tabby shook his head violently. "Stop! Get out of here, Vixen! Run while you can!"
Vixen halted, unsure of what to do. Alpha's cold blue eyes ordered Vixen to run - and run, she did. The russet-furred she-cat turned and darted away, looking back once at her leader. "You will pay dearly for this, EtherealClan cat!"
When Vixen disappeared from sight, Crescentwing pinned Alpha down, growling lowly at him. "You should've asked her to stay."
Alpha snarled, and used his hind paws to kick Crescentwing in the belly. Yelping, Crescentwing staggered long enough for Alpha to recover.
"You will not exit this cave alive!" Alpha hissed, his fur bristling.
The two cats circled each other, neither taking their eyes of their enemy. Neither wanted to back down.
"I've trained everyday since you murdered my mate, Alpha. I will never rest till every single Justice Seeker is dead!" Crescentwing declared, lashing her tail.
"He committed a crime - he deserved death!" Alpha hissed, his icy blue eyes locking with Crescentwing's burning amber eyes.
"Justice Seekers are following the wrong path - and I intend to stop it," the brown tabby she-cat was determined, her stance aggressive and ready to attack. "You killed my mate just because he picked a flower. A flower for me. In what way was that wrong?"
"He wasted a flower's life - he killed it without a good reason. He deserved his punishment," Alpha growled. "We were only doing what was right."
"You did it because you have lost your purpose! Killing an innocent cat for picking a flower - how ridiculous can you get?" Crescentwing hissed, hurt evident in her voice. "Runninggale told me you even killed Fluffycloud, one of our senior warriors, just because you think his name is a hazard to everyone's health!"
"It was!" Alpha insisted stubbornly, stomping a paw onto the ground.
Hopeless, Crescentwing thought. The shield around her heart was crumbling - after so much hatred and anger, her resistance was diminishing. Her sorrow washed in like a wave, knocking her off balance. "Runninggale..."
Taking advantage of Crescentwing's vulnerability, Alpha unsheathed his claws and swiped at her cheek. Dazed, Crescentwing felt almost nothing as Alpha's claws sliced through her pelt.
Vengeance.
The thought of revenge snapped her back to reality, causing her to jolt up abruptly. Crescentwing used the pain to fuel her desire to kill and avenge her mate. She felt her blood coursing through her veins, and her determination rising up a notch.
"Prepare to face oblivion!" she snarled, lunging at the silver-and-white tabby tom. Her claws yanked out chunks of fur as they swiped viciously and mercilessly.
Alpha's yelps of pain were hardly registered into Crescentwing's mind as she bombarded Alpha with frontal attacks. She twisted her body and lashed out with her hind paws, her front paws supporting her weight.
The explosive kick caused Alpha to hit against the cave walls and collapse onto the ground. Wincing, the Alpha stood up. His paws were shaking, but his stance remained aggressive.
Crescentwing leapt over Alpha and landed behind him. She clamped her jaws onto Alpha's tail, and yanked, hard. Alpha was thrown off balance and fell backwards.
"It's over," Crescentwing mewed softly, slitting his throat.
Alpha gasped, convulsing and twisting in agony, his yowls coming out in staggers. His eyes rolled back and his breathing halted. Satisfied, Crescentwing turned and looked out of the cave; she had one more task she had to do before she completed her objective - to kill the final Justice Seeker, Vixen.
Aware of her wounds, Crescentwing paused to clean them. Her traumatic memories of Runninggale's death flashed into her mind.
I love you.
You will soon be avenged, Runninggale, the brown tabby thought, sighing deeply. Soon.
"Do you know how it feels? How it feels to have a hole in your heart?" Crescentwing spoke, raising her head. She caught Vixen's scent when a breeze blew by, and knew she was nearby. "I know you're there, Vixen."
Crescentwing heard a soft sigh, and the russet-furred she-cat stepped into the cave. Her piercing amber eyes rested on her fallen comrades. "A hole? Try four. You killed them all, cat."
"They certainly deserved it. They are misguided," Crescentwing spat bitterly. "They killed my mate, and so many others."
"They did what they thought was right," Vixen growled, her eyes flashing in anger. "You killed them for that."
"You're the smartest - but you certainly don't understand the main picture," Crescentwing scoffed, flicking an ear.
"I am. Which is why I'll be the one who kills you!" Vixen hissed, darting towards Crescentwing.
"Alpha will be so disappointed when you see him again," Crescentwing purred mockingly, stepping aside to dodge Vixen's attacks. "I thought you liked me, Vixen."
"I take it back!" Vixen yowled in agitation, swiping her claws blindly at her opponent.
It's working, Crescentwing thought with satisfaction. Her plan to bring Vixen down was by agitating her to the extent that she would be too clouded with anger to think smartly.
The battle was no less than a dance - or a game - to Crescentwing. She was light on her paws, constantly dodging Vixen's frontal attacks. Every time Vixen missed, she would become more frustrated and infuriated, causing her to be more careless.
Slash.
Dodge.
Slash.
Dodge.
"Someone needs to practice their aim," Crescentwing mocked, leaping above Vixen, and landing behind her. She lunged for Vixen's scruff, and yanked her towards her.
Vixen yelped in surprise, struggling to break free. "You'll pay for this!"
Crescentwing released Vixen abruptly, sending her crashing into the wall. Vixen groaned in pain, glaring up at her enemy. Crescentwing pondered over her options and thought about a battle move she has been perfecting since the Justice Seekers killed Runninggale.
Breathe, Crescentwing thought, inhaling sharply. She waited for Vixen to recover and watched her carefully. This better work, she thought.
Vixen sprinted towards Crescentwing, even more agitated than before. Her eyes were glazed with fury, and her movements were almost unpredictable.
Crescentwing swiped a paw in front of her, startling Vixen. That momentary lapse was long enough for Crescentwing to tackle Vixen by headbutting her.
Vixen staggered for a while, but recovered instantly. She launched a series of snaps and swipes, aiming blindly at Crescentwing.
Crescentwing moved backwards, keeping a distance between Vixen and herself. She studied her opponent, knowing that her timing was crucial for the success of her self-invented combat move.
She leapt, seemingly soaring through the air. She tucked her paws in, close to her belly, making a spin. She then lashed out at Vixen, who was running towards her.
After Vixen was dazed, Crescentwing sheathed her claws and used them to attack Vixen. The impact was hard, but almost harmless. It stunned Vixen, causing her to be in a disarray.
Finishing her move set, she ran towards the cave wall behind Vixen and pushed herself off the wall, twisting her body so that she was upwards.
Vengeance.
Unsheathing her claws, Crescentwing dug her claws into Vixen's shoulder mercilessly, pushing her to the ground. She ignored Vixen's yowls of pain and pleads to stop, closing her jaws around the russet-furred she-cat.
Time blurred and staggered as Vixen's last breath left her body. "Y-you will p-pay for this..."
Vengeance is served.
Slumping down onto the cave floor in immense exhaustion, Crescentwing realised she had won the fight. She peered out of the cave entrance, staring lovingly at the sky. The Justice Seekers are no more. I love you, Runninggale.
Justice has prevailed.
