Chapter 1

Dawnkit rose from her nest and stretched. "Sunkit? Are you awake?" She purred quietly. Her sister responded with a grunt. "Come on. Get up. I want to play!"
"Go play by yourself," Sunkit meowed, muffled by her nest.
"Fine..." Dawnkit said quietly as she walked out of the nursery.
"Ugh, fine, I'll play with you," The ginger she-kit said, yawning. Dawnkit bounced back into the nursery, waiting eagerly for her sister to fully rise.
The two sisters padded out of their den together, Dawnkit slightly farther ahead than her sister. She led her slightly younger sister towards the entrance of camp.
"Dawnkit? What are you doing? You know we're not allowed to go out of camp!"
"We aren't going out of camp," the brown she-kit assured her. "We're going to look for Applepelt."
"Why?" The fluffy ginger kit asked her sister, tilting her head slightly.
"Because he's our father, of course."
"But he might not have time to play with us. Or maybe he's on patrol," Sunkit pointed out.
"Well, we'll ask another warrior where he is, and if he isn't here, we'll just get Smallrose to play with us."
"OK then..." Sunkit said uncertainly.

The two she-kits padded around the camp, trying to find a warrior who was currently unoccupied.
"Icefeather!" Dawnkit called to the warrior, who had been washing herself.
"Yes, Dawnkit? What is it?" She asked the kit, padding closer to her.
"Do you know where Applepelt is?" Sunkit asked the gray and white she-cat.
"I think he went on hunting patrol."
"Oh... OK. Thanks," Dawnkit mumbled. Icefeather's whiskers twitched sympathetically.

Slowly, the two four-moon-old sisters padded back into the nursery to be with Smallrose.
"Where were you two?" Their mother asked drowsily.
"We were looking for Applepelt," Sunkit told her.
"We wanted to play with him," Dawnkit added.
Smallrose stretched. "You could go and see if any of the apprentices aren't busy. I'm sure they would play with you."

After a little while of looking, they found an idle Lilypaw, who happily agreed to play with them. They played until sunhigh came around, and they would have played longer if they could've, but Lilypaw had to go patrol.

The kits stayed in the nursery for most of the rest of the day... until Lilypaw came crashing through the camp entrance. The clan gathered around, intrigued by the scarred, bloody she-cat. She was panting loudly, and her eyes were wide, her gray and white fur was standing on end. "B-BarkClan..." She said, her voice shaky. "Th-they attacked..."
Mousestar was standing atop the Highstump. "Finchberry! Get Lilypaw's wounds treated as soon as possible," he ordered. "Duskwing! Organise a group of warriors to go fight!"
Dawnkit shivered. This was terrifying. Lilypaw's wounds were gushing blood, and the entire clan was in turmoil. Smallrose attempted to get her kits back into the nursery, but they were too busy watching the scene in front of them. She eventually had to resort to picking them up and dropping them into their nest.
"Smallrose?" Sunkit squeaked. "Is everyone going to be OK?"
"I... I don't know Sunkit. I hope so."
"Is Applepelt out there?" Dawnkit asked in a small voice. Smallrose didn't answer her. "He is, isn't he?"
"Yes... He is." She replied, her voice shaky.
"He'll be OK, right?" Sunkit queried.
"Of course. He's your father, he's very strong." Her mother tried to be optimistic. "Now come on, why don't I get you some fresh-kill and then you can rest?"
"Alright..." The two kits mewed, slightly out of sync. They both knew that this wasn't going to put them at ease, but they went along with it anyway.
Their mother left and returned shortly afterwards with a squirrel in her mouth. She dropped it next to her kits, who ate it quickly. They hadn't really noticed it, but they had grown hungry after playing for so long. They curled up afterwards, although with the events of all that had happened still swirling in their heads, it took them a while to fall asleep. It's a wonder they even slept at all.
