Chapter 6
⠀⠀ Jaypaw stumbled blindly through the forest. She didn't know where she was going. She didn't care. As long as she was away from that snake-hearted cat she would be okay.
⠀⠀ There were desperate calls behind her now, but she ignored them. Only her brothers could keep up with her, but they were too shocked to follow at first. Jaypaw was the fastest in her family, and the only one with blue eyes. It didn't mean anything to her except that she was weird. She flattened her ears and sped up.
⠀⠀ "Run like you were born in Windclan!" She growled to herself as her paws began to tire. The simple mention of the clan seemed to boost her energy as she charged towards the border that led to rogue territory.
⠀⠀ The sight of a familiar looking pelt caught her attention. It was cream, with a white underbelly and green eyes. Timberpaw's eyes. Jaypaw froze.
⠀⠀ "It can't be..." she whispered, but it was. Hiddenfrost padded towards her, her figure a hazy glow.
⠀⠀ "Hello Jaypaw." she mewed. "We must speak quickly." Stunned, the apprentice nodded and followed her mother to a hidden spot. "I have come to give you a prophecy."
⠀⠀ "But... I'm not a medicine cat." She mewed shakily.
⠀⠀ "I know dear, but this is for you."
⠀⠀ "Give it to Cherrypaw..."
⠀⠀ "After flames bring darkness and many birds fall, one choice will determine the fate of them all." The queen mewed, ignoring the statement.
⠀⠀ "What does that mean?" She mewed as the sounds of her brothers became closer.
⠀⠀ "I must go." Hiddenfrost mewed, slowly disappearing.
⠀⠀ "No! Don't leave me again!" She wailed, throwing herself at her mother, but she was gone. Vanished into thin air. She suddenly felt herself under the weight of two cats. She knew who they were without even looking.
⠀⠀ "Get away from me." She growled, struggling to stand. Adderpaw shook his head and Timberpaw just stood there.
⠀⠀ "I said get away from me!" There was no moon tonight, only stars. They were dim though, like they were all watching and knew what was about to happen. Jaypaw yowled and kicked them off before scrambling to her feet and charging away.
⠀⠀ This time she didn't stop. She just kept running. The she cat ran over rocks, through vines, away from adders, and finally she leapt over a small river. There was a dark shadow on the other side, with icy blue eyes. She turned to face it.
⠀⠀ "Who are you?" She mewed to the strange cat. He tipped his head. His ears were nicked in several places and he had a large scar across the back of his neck. His pelt other than that was sleek, and he had long legs.
⠀⠀ "I'm Jaxx." He mewed. The tom hopped over the water and blinked. He was about her age, and his face sort of looked familiar. "Who are you?"
⠀⠀ "Jaypaw." The black rogue went rigid at the sound of her name and he slowly let out a hiss.
⠀⠀ "Vixen told me about you cats before she went missing! How you live in one big group and hunt other cats if they get too close!" His claws slid out and he advanced towards her, snarling.
⠀⠀ "No! You've got it all wrong! We don't kill cats!" She explained, hoping he'd come around. "We chase you guys off because you steal our prey." That came out wrong. She sounded to accusing. Thankfully, he sheathed his claws and sat up, embarrassed. "Who is Vixen, anyway?"
⠀⠀ "Oh. She's my sister. She went missing a couple moons ago after our parents were taken by two legs as she said you guys call them. She's been following you guys around ever since she was five moons old. I guess that's only one moon, but you know, she followed you." He shrugged and licked his paw.
⠀⠀ "I'm sorry she went miss-"
⠀⠀ "Well I'm not. She was horrible! Rude, manipulative, ambitious." He paused. "Even willing to kill..." Most of that sounded familiar, but the last part made Jaypaw feel sick.
⠀⠀ "Is that why you have that scar?" She asked Jaxx, noticing his eyes become dark.
⠀⠀ "Yes. We were out hunting, and a group of cats was close by. There was a small dog, and she shoved me towards it. The creature was tied up near a barn, but it still got my scruff. She said she was sick of me and that I'd been getting in her way. I got loose, but I never saw her again." He shuddered, and Jaypaw froze.
⠀⠀ "Was she by any chance, a ginger she cat with green eyes?" Jaxx looked at her, shocked.
⠀⠀ "Yeah... were you in the group that killed her?"
⠀⠀ "We didn't kill her, but I'm pretty sure she wants to kill me. I remember a fire colored rogue tumbling into me. She had the stale scent of dog. She's joined Thunderclan now. Her name is Wrenpaw."
⠀⠀ "Wrenpaw?" He mewed, tipping his head. "That's strange. Please don't tell her I lived! She'll hunt me down and kill me! I'm the only living cat that knows her name. If anyone calls her that, she will come back for me."
⠀⠀ Jaypaw felt a pang of guilt. The light sound of paw steps sounded behind her and her brothers appeared out of a bush.
⠀⠀ "Jaypaw, get back here!" Timberpaw wheezed. His eyes were streaked with tears. "Dad..."
⠀⠀ Before he could even finish his sentence, Jaypaw was running towards their camp. Her dad couldn't be dead. He was probably just hurt and wanted to talk to her. Jaxx yowled something, possibly a warning, but none of the siblings heard him.
⠀⠀ By the time they arrived, cats were wailing and hissing at each other. What happened? The middle of the camp answered her question. In the very center was none other than a dying deputy. His eyes were glazed with pain as he looked at his kits.
⠀⠀ "Dad!" Jaypaw wailed, barreling up to him. There was a bite on his flank. The adder was sprawled out next to him, dead. She guessed that his friend had killed it.
⠀⠀ "Jaypaw..." he rasped. "Come here. The rest of you, leave us." She nodded and padded closer to him, licking his ear in an attempt to make him feel better and calm down.
⠀⠀ "The day before your mother died..." he wheezed, "she told me something very shocking." His amber eyes scanned hers. "You have different colored eyes for a reason. You and your brothers are different..." A cough rattled his chest as he set his head down on the dirt. He motioned for her to come forward so no one else could hear. "You are... half clan... your... father's... name..." Those were his last words.
