Chapter 5
Dovepaw padded solemnly out of the den into her own. What will the other apprentices think about a newly-apprenticed cat being a warrior all of a sudden? Will they hate her? Maybe she could get some sleep, she thought. She circled around a comfortable nest and rested her head on her snowy paws.
She awoke on a riverbank. Her eyes darted around her surroundings. Instead of the familiar forest sounds, all she heard was the wiring of water spinning around her. Her thick pelt was darkly clinging to her sides, and her tail dropped down. She heard a voice calling a name.
"Doveleaf! Doveleaf! Where on earth are you?" As soon as she heard the water splash, a black-and-white shape popped out of the rapids. They rushed over to Dovepaw, and she wrinkled her nose at the Kittypet stink. Twolegs rapidly spat words out, their voices ringing in the trees.
"W-who are you?" Dovepaw hissed, her ears flatter to her head than ever before, partly because of the heavy water in her fur.
"Mittens! Remember? Wow! Have you shrunk in size?" Gasped Mittens cheerily.
"N-no! How do y-you know me?" She stuttered as the icy water splashed at her sides.
"Oh, Doveleaf! I'm the one that saved your Thunderbolt tribe or whatever!" The Kittypet mewed. Dovepaw was furious, disrespecting her Clan's name? How dare they!
"Get away you disgusting Kittypet!" She snarled, her lips drawn back to show her set of teeth. The tamed cat backed down, flinching at the harsh words. Just then a wave towered over her, inside the wave was a long stem, juniper berries sticking out. The red berries shriveled as quick as a mouse, turning to black flames. The water dried out and fire took over the bank. The Kittypet was gone, and Lionstar sat at the edge of the fire-circle.
"One ray of sun will shrivel the whole forest, and thunder may not strike against it." Lionstar said as she finished. What do you mean? Wondered Dovepaw hopelessly.
Dovepaw jolted up, and the flickering noise of fire died down. She padded outside her den to see Stonestar on the Highrock.
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Highrock for a Clan meeting!" She yowled. All the Clan surrounded the huge stone, eyes wide. Dovepaw noticed in particularly Featherpaw and Duskpaw watching anxiously. Oh no . . Dovepaw thought.
"Featherpaw, Duskpaw, step up. Rivertrickle, Torntuft, do you believe these two apprentices have trained like warriors?" She mewed. Yes! Dovepaw thought successfully. The two warriors nodded.
"I, Stonegaze, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these two apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as a warriors in their turn. Featherpaw, Duskpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
The apprentices nervously looked up. "I do."
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior names. Featherpaw, from this day on you will be known as Featherheart, warrior of ThunderClan. StarClan honors you for your courage and bravery, and welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan." She announced. Featherheart quivered with delight as Stonestar rested her head on his, and the new warrior licked her shoulder in return. "And Duskpaw, from this day on you will be known as Duskwhisker, warrior of ThunderClan. StarClan honors you for your honoree and intelligence, and welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan." Finished the Clan leader as she did the same to Duskwhisker. Dovepaw, instead of feeling happy for her Clanmates, was terrified. What could her dream mean? And did it mean that trouble was near?
