Chapter 1: Sorrow

I, Stormyfur, a tortoise shell she-cat who is the deputy of StormClan, padded swiftly across the camp to the medicine den. "Thunderpaw?" I called to my sister. My sister, a small brown and orange tortoise shell she-cat, came around the corner. "Yes, Sis?" Thunderpaw looked at me with worry in her eyes.. "Are you okay?"

"Yes, I'm fine. I just need to see mom." I told her firmly.

"Oh, okay then. Right this way." Thunderpaw flicked her tail for me to follow. As I followed my sister, I couldn't help thinking how I was younger than her, yet she was still an apprentice.

Thunderpaw led me to the back of the Medicine Den. There, in the nest closest to the wall, lay a tortoise shell she-cat curled up in a ball, Sparklemoey, my mother. "I will come and check on you cats in a minute. I have to get back to my herbs." Thunderpaw smiled. "Okay." I said softly.

I padded slowly towards the she-cat. "Mother," I said calmly. The old she-cat looked up from the nest at me. "Stor-Stormyfur?" My mother mewed. "I'm here, Sparklemoey, mother, I'm here." She mewed. "Good. I'm dying, Sweetie." She croaked. "No, you're not! You're going to live!" I protested. I had no idea what made her think she was going to die. Even though the thought was tearing through my mind day and night for moons and moons ever since Sparklemoey had gotten sick from white cough.
"Yes, I am, my lovely kit." She mewed. "I always knew you were going to be a good warrior." She croaked with pride. "Mom, I'm deputy know. You were too sick to come to my ceremony." I told her, wondering if she had never been told that her own kit was now deputy of StormClan. "Are you now? Well, that's even better." She smiled. "I always knew I would spend my last moments with a cat I love..." she mewed. Her eyes just slits. Then, it hit me. The only cat who could have told her would be a medicine cat. But not just any medicine cat. The medicine cat apprentice, who has always been there for mom, who would share her biggest secrets with mom, and would always tell her the truth. My own sister, Thunderpaw. "Don't believe what Thunderpaw says! You're not going to die!" I mewed with encouragement. If only I could believe my own words. I tried to sound as certain as I could, but I knew it wasn't true. Thunderpaw knows what she was doing. She is being trained the best medicine cat StormClan could ever have, Snowstorm.

"I... I-I'm sorry I never spent time with you and your sister as much as I did with Lightningfur... I was just so proud of him. But I did love you and your sister as much. And now, this is my last moments with you three." She took a long shaky breath. Then she finished, "Can you go fetch Lightningfur and Thunderpaw for me? I want to he with all of you for our last moments together...?" She demanded. I couldn't argue anymore. All I could do was nod and pad out of the den.

I came back with Thunderpaw and my side. Lightningfur pushed pasted me and Thunderpaw, nearly knocking us over. "Mother!" The young tortoise shell tom yowled. "Lightningfur..." Mom croaked. "I'm here mother!" In my ears, there was no way of not knowing that there was a weak tone in my brothers voice. He had always been close to mom, more than any cat in StormClan. Even me and Thunderpaw.
