Chapter Two
Blossomkit woke up to the sound of coughing. She saw Bearkit coughing. He wasn't stopping.
"Applefall!" Blossomkit squeaked. "Bearkit's coughing!"
Her mother rolled over.
"I see," she mumbled.
Badgerkit tumbled over to them.
"It doesn't sound very bad," he chirped.
But it grew worse. Over the next five days, it had turned to whitecough, and now Bearkit was in the medicine den.
Badgerkit had taken to visiting him often, but Blossomkit trailed further away. I don't want to catch it, too.
Another patient joined Bearkit soon enough. It was Sunkit, who had been visiting him too. Blossomkit felt guilty. Every other cat visits them. What's stopping me?
But each time she neared the medicine cat den, the scent of whitecough drifted into the air, and fear made her stay away. Why? Why am I so afraid?
Blossomkit didn't understand it. One day, however, she crept into the medicine den. Sunkit was asleep, but Bearkit was only lying in his nest.
"B-Bearkit? I-I-I'm visiting you. I'm sorry I haven't seen you yet since the whitecough broke out." Blossomkit crept closer.
Bearkit shrugged it off. "At least you're here now. What's wrong?" Blossomkit looked uneasily at Bearkit. she thought for a while before she finally realised what she was so uneasy.
"I'm scared of you Bearkit. I'm scared you might hurt me." she finally blurted. Bearkit's eyes were surprised before finally confusion then offense. "No, I mean the whitecough. I'm scared of getting it. I mean you have it and people visiting you are getting it." she said quickly, not wanting to see her brother hurt.
"Oh, I see." Was all he said. It was Blossomkit's turn to be surprised.
"That's all? No getting mad at me, to mean words? Nothing?" She questioned. Bearkit shrugged in response.
"Yeah, I mean it was a mistake on your part so. And I'm sure you didn't mean it." Bearkit looked at her seriously. Blossomkit's eyes widened in shock.
"No of course not! You're my brother! I would never say anything like that to you purposefully, with the intention to hurt you." Bearkit relaxed and smiled.
"I was only joking Blossomkit." he said. "But if you are scared, you can leave now, you don't have to visit me." Blossomkit shook her head furiously.
"No, I owe you many visits. Sorry Bearkit for not coming here earlier." she apologized. Bearkit smiled.
"It's okay, and I kind of like the silence, giving me time and room to think. To think about how everything works and the greatness I could achieve." He said, his eyes shining. Blossomkit nodded in agreement, thinking how it would be her dream come true to be a wise and strong warrior. Someone who everyone looked up to. Bearkit continued, "One day, I had a thought. When I become leader, I could make everything better. I would do what's best for my Clan. When LightClan comes to attack, I would drive them away with my sheer force of power and strength." Blossomkit started shuffling her paws, getting an unsettling feeling. She didn't like how Bearkit was already referring to the Clan as his. And the way he talked about how he would control the Clan made her just want to run out of the den. She quickly got up.
"Thanks for the company Bearkit, I'll visit you soon!" She said. As she neared the entrance of the den, she heard his voice again.
"You should think about it Blossomkit. We could rule this Clan together, and make it better with our own ideas." Blossomkit quickened her pace.
"Uh, maybe later Bearkit. Have a nice day!" she stepped out of the medicine cat's den and almost ran back to the nursery. She quickly curled herself up into a ball, swaying herself to sleep. She pushed Bearkit's ideas to the back of her head, ignoring the nagging feeling of doubt of her brother's loyalties.
The next morning, Blossomkit woke up to see that her mother and Badgerkit were still asleep. She crept outside.
Poking her head into the medicine cat's den, she saw that although both Smallberry and Eaglepaw's nests were empty, Bearkit was fast asleep, in his nest next to Sunkit's nest. Blossomkit shivered as she imagined what kinds of dreams he might be having, including ones he had even while he was awake.
His dreams to rule the Clan someday, to overpower LightClan.
Blossomkit remembered the prophecy. A thought struck her: Does Bearkit know about the prophecy too? Is that why he wants to defeat LightClan?
These were unsettling thoughts, especially since Blossomkit didn't want to go to war.
Does he know?
Hey, guys! Squirrel here. I edited this chapter, and wrote some of it too. So did Cabbage. I began to look at this chapter again when I saw that Cabbage had restarted it. :3 I shall start Chapter Three in a bit. :) Thanks for reading!
