The Sickness

Makira glanced at the ground as Jasper told his story. She was beginning to believe she had made the wrong choice, but it was to late now. She was a traitor.

Her attention was bought by the two bangs from a gun. Makira stalked to the front of the crowd and bent down by the body. "I need light, do not touch it."

The boy let out a gasp and tried to crawl back but was stopped by her grabbing his wrist. "Stop, I am trying to help." Her dark eyes scanned him. "Do not touch him. Triku never release prisoners unless they carry disease. I shall handle him, and I alone, understood?"

She bent down and picked up the boy bridal style. One of the kids shifted nervously. "He's a killer."

She raised an eyebrow. "So am I, so is your leader. Let me through."

Reluctantly, they obeyed. She scoffed lightly. "Bushhada. [Cowards.] Do not worry, I do not let harm befall my patients if I can help it."

The boy let out a gargled gasp as he thanked her. She set him down carefully before setting him down. Makira grabbed water, alcohol, and a cloth. She started by removing the blood with a wet cloth.

Not even bothering to glance up at the eyes watching her, she spoke. "Staring will not make him go away nor will it avenge the dead. Leave us." Makira turned slightly. "I said go! For all you know, the disease could be highly contagious."

Heavy footsteps burst through the doors and she stopped. Standing up, she grabbed her spear. "Everyone out, now."

Bellamy scowled. "You don't know what he's done."

Makira maintained eye contact. "I said out. Let me know if anyone starts coughing up blood. Otherwise, leave us."

Clarke gasped slightly. "Coughing up blood?"

"Yes. Get your soldiers ready for battle. My...the grounders use diseases to thin the battle field. They'll strike at dawn."

Bellamy huffed. "Fine. Everyone out!" Bellamy lingered for a second or two before exiting as well.

Murphy shuddered from his place on the ground. "Am I going to die?"

Makira returned to patient's side, a cloth now in hand once more. "It is uncertain. People have different reactions, but if I can keep you from choking on your own blood for 24 hours, you will live."

Murphy nodded to himself. "Don't choke on blood. Got it."

Makira smiled slightly. "There. I can see your face now."

Murphy groaned. "Lucky you." Lurching forwards, he coughed up some blood. His light eyes followed her as she wiped his mouth. "Why are you helping me? More importantly, why are you here? With us?"

Her eyes focused on the water as she dipped the cloth again. "I have been marked a traitor. I would be executed if I returned. I saved Octavia, so Bellamy has granted me sanctuary."

The boy scoffed. "Traitor. Yeah, I know how it feels."

Her darker eyes met his. "What do you know, Skaikru?"

He groaned as she started to wipe the blood off of his torso. "What does that even mean? Skaikru."

She wrung out the cloth. "Sky people."

The boy coughed again. "My name is John Murphy. Wait a second, didn't you say that the disease is highly contagious?"

Kira glanced up. "Yes, but you only get it once. I had it before, so I am immune." She was silent for a moment. "You have a most unusual name."

Murphy scoffed. "Yeah, okay Pocahontas."

Her eyebrows furrowed with confusion. "My name is Kira."

He winced slightly. "She's a movie character, forget it."

The statement only confused her further. "What is a movie?"

"You know, like a moving picture book. It's used for entertainment."

A look of realization passed over her face. Picking up a leather bound book, she threw it across the room before shrugging. "Your people must be very easily entertained."

Murphy was silent for a moment before he burst into laughter, only to be cut off by him choking. Guiding his shoulders, Makira bent him over, rubbing his back.

"You're okay, elafrá mátia." Murphy gave her a weirded out look. "I can give you a nickname of my own."

Both young adults jerked back as more people entered. Makira's lips drew themselves into a thin line. "Shit...it spread."
