Chapter 17
Silverstar's P.O.V:
Brilliant. Silverstar thought in her head as she hurriedly ended the clan meeting and climbed into her den. She sat down on her nest and sighed. Now the clan feels unsafe.
"May I come in?" A voice sounded from the den entrance. Silverstar glanced up to see Waterfly balancing skillfully on the branch outside Silverstar's den.
"Yes." Silverstar mumbled and sat up straighter and quickly licked her chest fur as the blue-grey medicine cat padded inside.
Waterfly took a seat in front of Silverstar and silently watched her. Silverstar could tell Waterfly wasn't sure what to say. The she cat blinked her dark blue eyes and twitched her whiskers before finally speaking, "Don't worry about the clan. They will get used to it."
Silverstar sighed heavily and nodded, "It's not that..." she lied softly and foxed her gaze on her paws.
Waterfly sunk to the ground so that she lay in front of Silverstar, "At least you know how to hide your eyes when you lie." She pushed her nose against Silverstar's forehead briefly before meowing, "Please do not fret, my leader. Lightclan needs a strong cat to lead them, especially if Magiclan are causing problems."
Silverstar sighed again and rested her head on her paws. Her tail flicked nervously, "But... what if I'm not... the right cat... to lead Lightclan?" She closed her eyes, "Maybe I was never supposed to come back here."
Waterfly gasped, "Do not ever say that! Who gave you your nine lives?"
Silverstar grumbled, "Starclan."
"And who gave you your powers?"
"Starclan.."
"Who loves you?"
"Starc- wait what?" Silverstar opened her eyes and looked up at Waterfly, "What?" She repeated.
Waterfly raised an eyebrow, "You still don't realise it? My Starclan you are blind sometimes." She rolled her eyes, "Stormflame loves you!"
Silverstar's eyes widened, "W-what?! He does?" She jumped to her paws, shocked. "I-I thought I was the only one. I didn't know he liked me too." She breathed and kneaded her paws on the ground.
Waterfly looked up at Silverstar, "See? Your clan needs you and so does Stormflame. Don't lose hope because of some grumbling warriors." The medicine cat smiled up at Silverstar, "and if I remember correctly... you still have to complete Stormflame's assessment."
Silverstar nodded, "Ok." She smiled and trotted out of the den, "Thanks, Waterfly!" She called as she climbed down happily.
__________
Stormflame's P.O.V:
"Stormflame! We're going to finish off your assessment!!" An excited voice called Stormflame out of his thoughts he shook his head slightly and glanced up at Silverstar. She was unusually bubbly and she grinned down at Stormflame as he slowly got to his paws and quickly gave his paw a few licks.
"What are we doing now?" Stormflame asked as he followed Silverstar into the forest. The trees swayed in the breeze that had picked up as the sun reached its highest point in the sky.
Silverstar didn't turn to look at him, she just flicked her tail and continued her brisk pace in front of him, "Power practice." She replied.
Stormflame nodded silently even though she probably didn't know he did. He bushed out his black fur to warm up as the breeze picked up and his fast pace faltered a bit. He nearly tripped over his own paws and he slowed down slightly.
Silverstar noticed and slowed as well so that they trotted beside eachother. The leader seemed to be acting weird; she was acting almost like an excited kit on its first day exploring. "Uh, Silverstar?" He stammered as he spoke.
The silver she cat glanced briefly at him, "Yes?" She flashed a small smile.
Stormflame twitched his whiskers and suddenly felt conscious. He wondered if he should ask such a question but he eventually did, "You seem to be acting..." he scanned his head for a good word so that he didn't offend her. Joyful. The voice whispered and Stormflame silently thanked it before meowing, "Joyful."
Silverstar chuckled, "You noticed?" She blinked and raised her tail a little higher over her head, "Yeah, I'm feeling quite joyful today."
Stormflame mumbled a, "Mmm" and kept silent until they reached the training clearing.
As they entered it, Silverstar seemed to change back to normal and she sat down on one end of the clearing. "First, I want to try something." She changed her fur to silver and trotted to Stormflame. "Put some of your fire on me, I want to see if my silver protects me from fire."
Stormflame seemed reluctant but accepted her request and formed a tiny flame in his paw and carefully placed it on Silverstar. She seemed to be fine so Stormflame made the flame larger and still the silver cat was smiling encouragingly at him, "Bigger." She urged quietly. Stormflame nodded and sat back on his haunches. He raised his paws and pressed them together. The flame went out. Then he slowly parted his paws and the flame appeared again and grew steadily on Silverstar's back.
Once it covered most of Silverstar's back, Stormflame clapped his paws together again and the flame diminished quickly. He stood up again and meowed, "Did you feel anything?"
"Believe it or not," she started, "I didn't feel a thing." Silverstar stepped back so that they were a few tail lengths apart. "Now shoot me with a strong fire ball."
Stormflame raised a paw and formed a small fire ball. He pulled back his paw and threw it at Silverstar. It hit her and she swayed from the impact but other than that, she seemed unaffected.
"This is incredible." Silverstar breathed and looked back up at Stormflame. "Now... let's try this wind power." She closed her eyes and raised both of her front paws. The slight breeze began to grow and after only a few heartbeats, it had grown quite strong.
Stormflame felt his fur being tugged by the strong winds and he called to Silverstar, "Slow it down!"
Silverstar nodded and lowered her paws but nothing happened. She blinked in confusion and tried clapping her paws together but still no difference. Stormflame started to panic as the wind grew stronger and stronger and he didn't know what to do.
The wind buffeted Stormflame and he felt the breath was constantly being knocked out of him. He ended up falling over onto his side and he couldn't get up. Silverstar, who seemed unaffected by the strong wind, stood desperately trying to stop the wind.
Stormflame managed to raise his paws and he shot a powerful fireball straight at Silverstar. Luckily, she was still wearing her silvery amour substance so it didn't hurt her but it distracted her enough for the wind to suddenly die down. Everything became silent and Silverstar breathed heavily. She glanced at Stormflame, "Sorry." She wheezed, "I think I need a bit of alone practice with that."
"No doubt about that!" A voice came from behind them and Waterfly and Clearlight emerged. The two of them had ruffled and messy fur, most likely from the winds Silverstar had created.
Stormflame flashed a smile at the two cats and sighed, "Good thing you two arrived, now we can all practice our powers." For a second, Stormflame realised that Waterfly was the only one without a second power out of the three. Obviously Stormflame only had one but both Silverstar and Clearlight had discovered their second powers. Why not Waterfly? Stormflame shook the thought away and realised Silverstar was talking to him.
__________
Waterfly's P.O.V:
Waterfly saw Stormflame blank out from everyone as if he was deep in thought. Waterfly felt this pull to stare him right in the eyes. Why would I be so tempted to do that? For a few heartbeats, she resisted but after a bit, the pull was so strong she agreed and fixed her gaze on Stormflame. Immediately she felt like she was in a dark place. Nothing was around, she was in a pitch black clearing. Then a voice, Stormflame's voice, sounded from everywhere at once. I realised that Waterfly was the only one without a second power out of the three. Obviously I only had one but both Silverstar and Clearlight had discovered their second powers. Why not Waterfly?
What? Was this Stormflame's thoughts? Where was she? Stormflame's mind?? She pulled her head back and she was suddenly back in the present time Silverstar was waving her paw in front of Stormflame's face."Stormflame? Hello???"
Wait a second. Waterfly thought. Speaking of finding my power... have I found it? Did I just read Stormflame's mind?
________
Clearlight's P.O.V:
"I swear I am surrounded by mouse-brains." Clearlight muttered as he looked at Waterfly, Stormflame and Silverstar.
Waterfly was in another world along with Stormflame and Silverstar was desperately trying to bring Stormflame back to the present. Waterfly was also muttering things like, "Minds" "Stormflame" "Powers" So Clearlight was completely confused.
At last, Stormflame came back along with Waterfly. Silverstar sat back, relieved and Clearlight just studied them with narrowed eyes. He stayed sitting and waited silently for one of them to speak. At last, Waterfly did.
"I discovered my new power." The blue-grey medicine cat whispered quietly. "I can read minds and speak to anyone using telepathy." She glanced around at everyone and flashed a knowing smile at Stormflame.
Stormflame nodded, "She spoke inside my head." The black tom blinked his icy blue eyes and glanced at Silverstar.
Silverstar nodded and spoke softly to Stormflame. The young tom nodded back at her and meowed, "Uh, should we continue practicing our powers?"
Clearlight mumbled a "Yes" and stood up.
"I'll start first." Waterfly whispered and got to her paws. She glanced around at everyone before settling her gaze on Clearlight. Suddenly, Clearlight heard a voice in his head. Can you hear me?
Yes. Clearlight thought in reply and watched Waterfly. She smiled at him and he felt her presence leave his head. "That power is quite impressive." Clearlight remarked and twitched his whiskers.
Silverstar stood up next, "Let me try again." She looked at Waterfly, "Be ready to create a water dome to block out the wind, " then at Stormflame, "And you be ready to shoot me with a fire ball."
Silverstar turned silver again and raised her paws. The wind started to build up at a slow pace and Clearlight watched her carefully for any signs that she lost control of the winds.
Luckily, Silverstar managed to slow the winds again and she sat down, panting. "I think I've got the hang of it." She panted and grinned.
Clearlight stood up next, "Me next." He looked around and settled for a nearby maple tree. He focused his powers on it and watched in awe as the tree swayed towards him as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Clearlight then made it move back into its normal position and smiled, "I can see why Skystar enjoyed this power."
After his meeting with Skystar the night before, Clearlight had been more comfortable with talking and thinking about his deceased mate.
He knew she was near him always.
