Chapter 2
As Mousepelt dropped her lousy catch on the fresh-kill pile, Amberheart's scent filled her mouth. Lowering her head and growling, Mousepelt turned to see the golden ThunderClan warrior burst in to camp, panting with terror in her eyes. Jumbledstar came out followed by Yellowstone and Vinetail. Yellowstone unsheathed her claws as she glared at the warrior.
"What do you want, Amberheart?" Stoneheart asked disdainfully, stepping out the nursery with Coldeyes and Docilepaw.
"Coldeyes, please, we need cat mint!" Amberheart pleaded, bolting over the the medicine cat.
"Why?" Coldeyes asked with disinterest.
"Whisperstar is very weak and Flowerstem ran out," Amberheart explained, "we thought you'd have them stocked after th-" Amberheart's plea was interrupted by a bout of coughing from the elder's den.
"Coldeyes," Spottedfur cried from the entrance of the den, "Snaketooth is coughing worse than Pinepelt and Rakeclaw!"
"As you can see, Amberheart," Coldeyes sighed angrily, "I must take care of my warriors before I become concerned about other Clans!" Coldeyes bolted over to the den, leaving Docilepaw and Stoneheart.
"Why would we even give you our herbs?" Stoneheart asked. "We helped you during the fire and thanks to your mate and apprentice, we have little herbs for this leaf-bare, just because we helped you once don't expect our help until you've done something for us!" the stripped deputy then retreated to the nursery. Docilepaw just shrugged and walked off to the elder's den.
Amberheart shook as she looked down at her paws. Mousepelt could only think of one place that had enough catmint. WindClan. But, after Larkfeather had been given the respect of deputy, she seemed more resentful toward other Clans.
Mousepelt's fur prickled as a short cough came out of Jumbledstar's throat. Yellowstone and Vinetail lead him back to his den as Midnightmoon, Beetlechaser, and Silversun watched with worry. Moonglow, Ashface, and Turtlefur ate their prey as if their father was just another sick cat. The former deputy had conspired with Limptail and Brokenjaw to get rid of Ravenclaw. They all feared he would take away their titles and the "most strongest kits". Trampleheart, Quakefoot, and Morningflower didn't seem concerned with Brokenjaw anymore, but the black and white warrior tried getting his mate, Silvertongue, to at least look at him.
"Get lost!" Limptail snapped at Amberheart. "We don't have enough herbs for a greedy Clan like ThunderClan!"
"Our leader is dying!" Amberheart spat.
"Then that's one last mouth to feed." Viperfang mewed, taking a break from her grooming.
"Viperfang!" Sirenpaw snapped at her mother.
"Don't you dare raise your voice to me!" Viperfang snarled.
"Enough!" Ravenclaw stepped in. "Amberheart, get out of here and find a different Clan to get herbs from, we already helped ThunderClan."
Amberheart immediately turned her attention to Mousepelt. What did she expect her to do? Mousepelt growled and walked over to her golden friend. "Go to WindClan or SkyClan, they should have plenty catmint to give."
Amberheart lowered her ears and she narrowed her eyes. "You know what, Mousepelt, you need to think about our prophecy before you think about your place in this Clan!" she snapped.
"Try looking after yourself for once!" Mousepelt retorted. "I can't help you unless you tell me how! I can't just waltz in your Clan and help you with SkyClan and WindClan, I didn't ask for your help with RiverClan! If Silversol is your Clan, come talk to me!" with that Mousepelt stormed in to the warrior's den.
Mousepelt looked down at her reflection in the lake. The moon was over the trees and Ravenclaw had gone to sleep. She didn't dare tell him what she was going to do. She gently put one paw in the fridged lake water. She shivered as she padded the rest of her body in the water. She made her way to WindClan territory, hoping a ThunderClan patrol wouldn't see her. The brown warrior sniffed and let out a tiny sob as the freezing cold began numbing her paws. If she caught green cough Coldeyes would tear her apart.
That's when a terrified yowl came from the edge of the ThunderClan border. Mousepelt turned her head to see Flowerstem look at her shocked and mouth wide open.
"Are you mouse-brained too?" The ThunderClan medicine cat shrieked. "Get out of there this instant!"
Mousepelt cursed under her breath as she went to get out of the water and sat in front of the tortoise shell.
"You poor thing!" Flowerstem fretted. "Look at your paws, there's bits of ice on them!" Mousepelt raised her paw and licked off the tiny frozen particles. "What were you thinking?"
"I-I w-was going t-to get... Catmint... F-for y-you and-d C-Coldeyes!" Mousepelt hissed through chattering teeth.
"Mousepelt..." Flowerstem looked at the warrior with a grateful gleam and sympathy. "You shouldn't have gone through so much for ThunderClan... You already did so much for us..."
"I... W-wanted t-to... Apologize to... A-Amberh-heart... For s-snapping at... Her..." Mousepelt shook.
"My goodness, look at you, come over here, out of the cold." Flowerstem moved the branches of a bush, allowing Mousepelt to step under it and curl up in a tight ball.
"Flowerstem." a familiar voice hissed from behind the bramble not far off. Mousepelt's eyes widened as Coldeyes appeared with catmint in his jaws. He almost dropped the sweet smelling herb when he saw his Clanmate. "What happened? Why's she shivering?" the grey tom ran over and looking Mousepelt over.
"I caught her trying to get to WindClan to get catmint by swimming through the lake past ThunderClan!" Flowerstem answered.
"Mousepelt what we're you thinking?" Coldeyes hissed, getting under the bush and lying next to her, pressing his pelt close to hers. Flowerstem joined them with the catmint and set some in front of Mousepelt.
"Eat this dear," the ThunderClan she-cat instructed. Mousepelt quickly looked away and ignored the beckoning scent.
"I... I'm not... W-worth it..." Mousepelt mewed, getting warmer as the medicine cats pressed close to her.
"Think about Ravenclaw, Mousepelt," Coldeyes pressed, "he can't live without you and neither can Amberheart." Mousepelt lapped up the herb and savored the delicious medicine.
"Can we please get the catmint?" Mousepelt pleaded, feeling much warmer.
"Alright, but when we return, you're staying in the nursery until I know for sure you're alright!" Coldeyes got to his paws.
"Go easy on her, Coldeyes," Flowerstem followed, more calmly, "she means well."
"Yeah, but she could have died in that water tonight!" Coldeyes snapped as Mousepelt followed them to the WindClan as they quarreled about their kit being hurt. Mousepelt rolled her eyes and prayed to StarClan her and Ravenclaw wouldn't end up like that.
They finally got to the stream that separated ThunderClan and WindClan. They stepped across on the stepping stones. Mousepelt saw the bush that had the catmint and quickly grabbed all she could with the medicine cats.
When they returned to the fallen tree that marked the border between ShadowClan and ThunderClan, Amberheart bolted out from a bush.
"There you are Flowerstem," Amberheart yowled worryingly, "Whisperstar needs... Mousepelt, Coldeyes?" her green eyes then switched to the catmint. "You got the catmint!"
"It's thanks to Mousepelt," Flowerstem purred, resting her tail on the speckled she-cat's shoulder, "she wanted to apologize for snapping at you earlier."
"Mousepelt, you didn't have to..." Amberheart's eyes glinted with gratefulness.
"Look, if I'm going to enjoy such a delicacy like this, than the she-cat I grew up with should too." Mousepelt purred, setting the mint down and pushing the medicine to the golden she-cat. Coldeyes and Flowerstem shared their goodbyes and headed off to their camps.
Amberheart picked it up, but stopped. Her eyes full of nostalgia. "I wish we could go back to that time..."
Mousepelt was about to agree, but then the vision of Spotpaw and Silversol jumped in her head. She lowered her ears and narrowed her eyes.
"Well it can't!" The brown she-cat snapped.
"Well... It could... I mean..." the ThunderClan warrior trailed off. "Why no-"
"It just can't!" Mousepelt wailed bolting off to ShadowClan, where her new future waited and the only friends she could remain completely loyal to. For the rest of her life...
