Chapter 16
The caves were quiet. Mousepelt listened to the stream flowing gently through the tunnels as she tried to rest. Her ears, however, kept twitching, making her anticipate a sound. She hissed in agitation finally and stormed to wherever the noise was coming from.
The noises soon turned to voices and she recognized Silversol's voice. Mousepelt stayed out of earshot and downwind, so no one would scent her. Deathmask was sitting proudly next to Silversol along with a black and silver tom Mousepelt had never seen before. Clawface and Snowtuft were sitting in a wide ranged group of other cats Mousepelt didn't recognize.
"The time is drawing closer!" Silversol announced to the cats. "We have broken Mousepelt and Amberheart is as useless as ever to this prophecy! Now, there is nothing to stop us from taking revenge on those ungrateful cats!"
Cheers broke out through the cave amongst the gathered cats. Mousepelt growled irritated.
Not while I'm still alive! Mousepelt hissed in her head as she bolted to a tunnel. She scratched at the sides until it began to crumble down around her. She quickly ran away from the collapsing rubble before heading to the next tunnel. She continued to close up the tunnels until she was sure she had plugged up all of them.
"What do you think you're doing?" Mousepelt spun and saw Snowtuft glaring at her with deep displeasure, his scar making Mousepelt want to purge.
"I'm glad you're here Snowtuft." Mousepelt snarled, unsheathing her claws.
"You won't kill me." Snowtuft flicked his white tail. He seemed unscathed by her threat but he didn't hide anything from her. He was terrified of everything!
"Oh, no?" Mousepelt tilted her head. "I made a promise to kill every last one of you! I won't let you hurt anyone up there! All I wanted was to make Amberheart know what it was like to not have the world kneeling at your feet, you all want to do is kill for the sake of killing and revenge!"
"What are you going to do?" Snowtuft spat back. "You just trapped yourself in here too!"
"Good!" Mousepelt hissed, baring her teeth. "Now, no one can hurt me and I can't hurt anyone! Neither can you!" she pounced on the white tom and they rolled around on the ground clawing at one another and tried biting at each other. Mousepelt struck the white tom's face and she felt blood splatter on her face. Snowtuft then bit her shoulder, making the she-cat flinch. She kicked at his stomach until he let go of her and she bit down on his forepaw.
An angry yowl split the air and Snowtuft was ripped away from Mousepelt. Another cat grabbed Mousepelt's scruff and pulled her away. Silversol flung Snowtuft to the side and stood between him and the brown speckled she-cat.
"Enough!" The white she-cat spat. "What is going on here?"
"She plans to kill us all!" Snowtuft snarled.
Silversol looked at him and blinked before letting out a soft mrrow of amusement. "She won't be able to kill us! She'll get weaker and weaker as time goes by."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Mousepelt hissed.
Silversol turned to her and her yellow green eyes gleamed. "Pretty soon, you'll need more cats around you, so that you can survive. You made this mistake yourself. You're stuck here and you won't be able to leave this place. Others will have to hunt for you. You don't want anyone to get hurt, you're just going to have to live with us then."
Mousepelt shivered. She hadn't been showing up for training with these cats and she could already feel herself get more lethargic by the day.
Her stomach rumbled and she realized she needed something to eat.
"Clawface, Darkstripe," Silversol looked to Clawface and the black and silver tom, "go find our darling some food. She's going to need it if she's going to stay here."
"Silversol!" a few cats ran up to her. "We were able to reopen the tunnels, she's clever, but we were able to drag the dirt out." one of them cast a dark look at Mousepelt.
"Good." Silversol purred. "Now, along with you dear, the warriors have some things to talk about."
Mousepelt wanted to end this prophecy and kill this fox hearted pile of mouse dung. Instead she shot away, leaving the mrrows of laughter behind her. She kept running until she felt sudden heat from the sun. She was outside the caves. The she-cat lowered her head. If she went back to ShadowClan, would they all accept her back in?
Ravenclaw had told her the Clans were planning to kill her if a warrior found her. He was trying to clear her name, but what could one warrior do? Frightwing might stand beside Ravenclaw. They were friends once. Coldeyes might agree with them. That's still only three cats. Mousepelt knew ShadowClan would give less about Amberheart's opinion and she was just one cat in ThunderClan. Other cats in the Clans probably forgot she saved the kits so long ago. And after seeing Amberheart's apprentice, they might see Mousepelt as a threat.
With all the strength in her body, Mousepelt went to ShadowClan territory and jumped in a tree. She hid herself in the shadows like Ravenclaw had taught her and went from tree branch to tree branch until she reached the camp.
Vinetail was meowing orders to a group of cats, indicating that she had become the new deputy. Stripeback was watching two kits with pride shinning in his eyes. A white she-kit and a brown tom. The golden and gray tom had made a mate of Silversun while she was gone. Rainpaw and Nightpaw looked older and stronger. They had probably become warriors by now.
Stonestar stepped out the leader's den with Blackclaw by his side. Spottedfur and Pinepelt were talking quietly to one another while Navi was sharing a vole with Snaketooth. Mousepelt looked away. She couldn't look anymore. Her Clanmates were going about their lives as if nothing wrong could go wrong. Unknowing to them a war was being planned beneath their paws. She couldn't tell anyone because no matter where she went, the Dark Forest was right behind her.
She jumped away from the camp until she was sure she was far enough. Mousepelt jumped down back to the ground and turned to head back to the caves.
"Hold it!" Mousepelt turned her head to see Silversol walk up to her from the bushes. "I have another target for you!"
"I'm not killing anyone else." Mousepelt meowed with little fight in her.
"Even if this cat almost hurt both you and Amberheart?" Silversol purred.
Mousepelt turned and, with a flick of her tail, followed Silversol through the bushes until a familiar scent came over her.
"Badgergrowl?" Mousepelt spoke.
"Shut up," Silversol hissed, "he'll hear us!"
Mousepelt kept following until the black and white tom came in to view. He was killing a thrush as its wings flapped defiantly.
"I don't want to kill him." Mousepelt grumbled. She didn't even want to hear his obnoxious voice.
"Too bad!" Silversol spat.
Mousepelt just glared at her and heard Badgergrowl kill his catch.
"Alright, you won't do it?" Silversol neared the brown she-cat. "I will!" and like that, Silversol vanished in a puff of smoke.
Mousepelt was suddenly overcome with hatred and blood thirst. She slowly began to make her way to the ThunderClan warrior. He was burying his catch as she got closer.
"Hello, Badgergrowl," Mousepelt purred.
Badgergrowl spun with his claws unsheathed. His eyes blazed as he saw who was behind him.
"You!" he snarled. "You killed Tigerkit's parents!"
Mousepelt was overcome with guilt and pain at the memory of killing the tom and his mate. She didn't want to do it, Silversol made her. She shook the guilt away and stepped forward.
"Yes. I did!" Mousepelt purred. "And it was fantastic! The blood, the shrieks of pain! It was delicious!"
"They had a kit!" Badgergrowl hissed.
"He'll be a stronger warrior for it! You should be thinking me!" Mousepelt flicked her tail.
"Traitor!" Badgergrowl pounced at Mousepelt and they both tumbled over a dip. Mousepelt felt sudden pleasure. This is what Silversol wanted.
Mousepelt flipped Badgergrowl off her and pinned him down with her unsheathed claws. She dug her claws deep into his fur, making the ThunderClan tom screech in pain. Scents of Ravenclaw, Vinetail, Nightpaw, and Stripeback came to Mousepelt followed by Amberheart, Cherrynose, and Foxtail.
"Help! Help me!" Badgergrowl wailed. Mousepelt dug her claws deeper, a purr rising in her throat. "Mosseye! Mosseye!"
"Mousepelt let him go!" Amberheart cried.
"I'll gladly let him go!" Mousepelt spat back. "If he's willing to beg!" Badgergrowl wailed in agony as Mousepelt dug deeper in to his back.
"Mousepelt!" Ravenclaw called out. "Let him go, this isn't you!"
"Pray!" Mousepelt demanded.
"Help me! Help! Somebody please help! Oh, dear StarClan please I don't want to die!" Badgergrowl shrieked to the sky.
"Stop!" Mousepelt jumped off the warrior and stumbled over, shaking her head ficiously. Stop it! I won't let you do this anymore! Mousepelt bolted away, mostly trying to get rid of Silversol, but she could hear Ravenclaw and Amberheart running after her. No! Mousepelt panicked. She'll kill them too!
When she neared the tunnels, she ignored the pleading from the two cats she loved. Mousepelt spun and lashed at them then stepped away shivering in agony.
"Leave me alone!" Mousepelt snarled. "Please," she said softer, "I don't want to hurt you." with that and no response, Mousepelt ran down the tunnel, back to her new home of darkness.
