Chapter 2

"Tell us again about the battle with Magiclan! Please!" Bouncekit begged, circling Violetspring with his long black tail sticking high in the air.

The elderly she cat chuckled softly at the four kits crowding her. "Alright, alright. Sit down, kits, and listen closely." Violetspring nudged each kit in turn to sit in front of her before beginning her story. "It was a grey, miserable and rainy day..."

Crimsonkit listened intently, her ears pricked as the elder explained the story of how Magiclan ambushed Flameclan's camp seasons ago. She could barely keep her paws still as the battle was explained; she imagined tearing her claws through Magiclan flesh, seeing their mangy blood splatter on the ground. It wasn't until Bouncekit gave her a sharp nip on the ear that Crimsonkit realised she had nearly sat on him with all her fidgeting.

"And that was how Flameclan beat Magiclan in battle." Violetspring concluded with a small smile.

"Awesome!" Bouncekit squealed, snapping to his paws. "Tell another one please!"

Violetspring rolled her eyes and replied. "Only if you bring me a nice juicy mouse to eat."

"Done!" Crimsonkit had never seen Bouncekit run so fast; the black and red kit dashed out of the elders den and made a beeline for the fresh-kill pile, nearly crashing into Pinepaw on his way there. The brown apprentice hissed and darted out of the way, nearly dropping the moss in his jaws.

"Stupid kits." Pinepaw muttered as he continued on toward the apprentices den.

Flarekit and Falconkit darted out after their brother with Crimsonkit trailing after them. Together, the four littermates managed to haul a plump mouse all the way across the main clearing and into the elders den. Violetspring gasped and grinned at her prey. "Well done!" She meowed, eyes shining. "This definitely deserves another story!"

Crimsonkit eagerly sat down before the elder, staring up at her with anticipation as she began her next story about Flameclan's history.

It was just past sunhigh when Crimsonkit trotted out of the elders den. The camp was slowly getting fuller as more warriors returned from patrols to have a snack and chat by the fresh-kill pile.

The red she cat spotted her father padding into camp with a bird in his jaws and she trotted over to him. "Hey Dad!"

"Oh hello Crimsonkit." Obsidianpelt greeted, placing his prey on the pile before turning to face her. "How's your day been?"

"Violetspring told us loads of stories, it was great." Crimsonkit smiled and glanced at the bird her father had caught. "How'd you catch the bird?"

Obsidianpelt chuckled and flexed his wings. "I flew after it and caught it in mid-air." The dark grey tom let out a wistful sigh. "Just how we hunted in the Tribe.."

Crimsonkit pawed his wings, gliding her paw pads along the scales. "Why do I have to wait for my wings to come? Why can't they just pop out now?"

"The transformation is brutal and a young kit like you would never survive the experience." Obsidianpelt meowed, his eyes suddenly changing to a haunted look, as if he was reminiscing his own transformation. "Besides, it's not long now. Only five more moons."

"But that's so far away!" Crimsonkit whined, twirling around her father's legs. "It's not fair."

Obsidianpelt flicked her ears with his tail. "Go play with the other kits and let me rest for a bit." He chuckled, sitting down to eat.

Crimsonkit flicked her tail in farewell and headed towards the nursery, where she had spotted her siblings disappear into.
