Chapter 46
It had been six days since they started traveling. Heavy snow rained around Ashstar. He shivered. At least no cat had died yet to this storm. They were already half way up the mountain. Icy wind blasted into Ashstar's face. Jaywing, who was beside him, had snow stuck to her face. She trudged through the snow.
Ashstar just hoped all of them would make it. All of a sudden, a yowl startled him. He turned around, trying to see what it was, but the only thing he could see was white. He turned to Jaywing and she looked at him, her blue eyes widened. "Don't go. We have to stay together!" He told her. I'm not losing her.
Ashstar led Jaywing down the mountain. In fact, he couldn't see or smell any cat now. But Ashstar's hope went up as he realized that the snow was getting lighter. He turned to check if Jaywing was still by him.
"Cinderheart!" Ashstar called out. "Stoneheart! Bunnypelt! Where are you?" He asked.
Jaywing shivered beside him. "Cinderheart!" She called out. "Graystripe!"
"Ashstar! Over here!" A voice called. It sounded like Rust. Ashstar ran towards the voice and saw Rust crouched on the snowy ground along with Ivypool and her two kits.
"Do you know where the rest are?" Ashstar asked.
"No. I don't know!" Rust cried.
"Rust! I've found some!" A voice called. It was Flower. The calico she-cat padded into view. Stoneheart and Bramblehawk were standing behind her. Stoneheart saw Ashstar and ran up to him. "Thank StarClan we've found you!" He meowed. He turned to touch his muzzle to Jaywing's head.
Ashstar touched his muzzle to his son's head. "You all need to get to safety," He meowed to them. "We'll all head farther up the mountain and try to find a cave," He meowed.
"Better yet, The Tribe Of Rushing Water!" Stoneheart gasped.
Ashstar blinked at him. "Yes. Maybe we should try to find them," He meowed.
Jaywing shifted her paws. "Ashstar, we need to find the others!" She cried. "Cinderheart is still out there along with Graystripe," She whispered.
Ashstar looked at her. "I know," He whispered to her.
"I'll look for them myself," Jaywing cried. She shot away from him, kicking up snow as she ran.
Ashstar looked after her. He turned back to Stoneheart. "She'll be fine," He whispered to his son.
Stoneheart blinked. "No! I'm going to go with her!" He meowed. He ran after Jaywing.
Ashstar watched them go, blinking. They were brave. Very brave.
"Aren't you going to go with them?" Bramblehawk asked.
"I trust them," Ashstar meowed. "As long as Jaywing has her brother by her side," He began, "She'll be fine."
Jaywing trudged through the snow, her brother right behind her.
"Jaywing, we've being searching for a few hours already," Stoneheart meowed to her. "What if they're dead?"
"No!" Jaywing cried. "They aren't! They can't be!" She mewed. She stopped in her tracks, the wind tugging at her fur. "They're still alive out there. Just somewhere."
"What if they've fallen off the cliff?" Stoneheart gasped.
"They couldn't of," Jaywing growled. The wind blasted her face, making her eyes sting. "I'll keep searching forever if I have to."
Stoneheart glanced at her, his yellow eyes reflecting the light snow. A snowflake landed on his nose, and he sneezed. He purred.
Jaywing couldn't purr. Not when her mother and mate were missing. She then thought of Mothpaw and Sootpaw. Her kits! Jaywing couldn't breathe. If she lost them, she didn't know what she'd do! She ran through the snow, tears streaming down her face. "Mothpaw!" She cried. "Sootpaw!" Her voice was so loud that it echoed around her. She continued to call their names over and over. Nothing even happened. No responses came back. Jaywing felt hopeless now. Now she was starting to believe that her kits were actually dead. She was about to give up when she heard the faintest sound of a meow.
Jaywing's heart almost stopped. Her paws prickled with hope. She ran towards the sound of the meowing.
"Jaywing!" Two voices squealed. Mothpaw and Sootpaw bounded up to her.
Jaywing stopped dead in her tracks and let her two kits crawl over her. They purred and purred, happiness surging through them. Jaywing got to her paws and licked their faces, purring. As she looked up, she saw Alderheart, Cinderheart, Kestrelflight, Harespring, Gorsetail, Graystripe, Rabbitpaw, Fernpaw, Mossheart, Tawnypelt, Squirrelflight, Rowandust, Dovepaw, and Eaglepaw. She'd found the rest of the Clan! Jaywing bounded towards her mother and thrust her muzzle in her face. Cinderheart rested her chin on Jaywing's head.
"I missed you so much," Cinderheart whimpered. "I was so worried!"
A soft lick on her shoulder startled Jaywing, and she turned to see Graystripe beside her. She purred. But Graystripe's eyes seemed dull.
"What's wrong?" Jaywing asked. She turned and realized that every other cat had the same expression on their face.
"Well," Alderheart began. "Dovepaw slipped and almost fell off the cliff. Eaglepaw tried to save her, but couldn't. And Bunnypelt died saving Dovepaw," Alderheart meowed sadly.
Jaywing gasped. "That's terrible!" She mewled.
"We know," Cinderheart whispered. "But he died the death of a warrior, protecting his Clan."
Stoneheart bounded up beside Jaywing and greeted his mother. They also told him about Bunnypelt's death. Stoneheart was sad, yet he also agreed that Bunnypelt died the death of a warrior.
The group started heading home. Jaywing didn't know how Ashstar would react to Bunnypelt's death. He was still mourning Softpaw's death. Jaywing felt sorry for him.
"We should be close," Stoneheart meowed beside her.
Jaywing had remembered that Stoneheart went to find Ashstar. He was the only cat in this group that knew where Ashstar was. Ashstar had also found The Tribe of Rushing Water. They were at the top of the mountain, and they said that they'd help. Jaywing felt happy, knowing that Cinderheart and her two kits were alive. She kept walking up the mountain top, Mothpaw and Sootpaw by her side. Stoneheart and Cinderheart were behind her, talking quietly.
Jaywing padded up the mountain, now feeling confident. Past this mountain, everything would be ok. They'd finally find a new home to live in....
