Chapter 42

It had been four days since the flood. Not many survived. Kestrelflight had lost Nightcloud to a sickness. Ashfoot had died to a sickness as well. Harespring remained along with Kestrelflight and Fernkit and Rabbitkit.

The only survivors in Ashstar's Clan were Jaywing, Ivypool, Stoneheart, Alderheart, Mothpaw, Sootpaw, Alderheart, Mossheart, Sorreltail, Squirrelflight, Graystripe, Cinderheart, Tawnypelt, Bramblepaw, Rowanpaw, Bunnypaw, Firekit, and then Fluffykit. Mossheart and Tawnypelt said that they wanted to join WindClan when they found a new home because they wanted to keep WindClan strong.

"The Clan is still strong," Ashstar had said to his Clan. He realized that ThunderClan and WindClan had survived. RiverClan had been destroyed, along with ShadowClan, which had been taken over by rogues, yet Ashstar didn't know what shape ShadowClan was in now ever since the flood happened.

They were heading across a hill. Ashstar could see a large twoleg place in the distance. He shuddered. Hopefully something was past that. Something good, land that hadn't been taken over yet.

"Hey Ashstar, we should stop and hunt!" Stoneheart meowed. "We need strength if we're going to travel for a long time," He meowed.

Ashstar realized he was right. "Ok," He meowed. "But first we should find shelter."

Ashstar and his Clan, along with WindClan, had decided to take shelter in a small, yet thick, forest. They found a very tall tree with a hollowed out space under its roots. And next to that they had also found a rotten log.

Ashstar had an important announcement to make. He crawled onto a slightly large rock that was close to the hollow.

"All cats, WindClan too, come join me for a Clan meeting!" Ashstar meowed.

ThunderClan gathered around him, along with Harespring and Kestrelflight from WindClan. Stoneheart padded over to Ashstar to stand beside him.

"Listen up, ThunderClan," Ashstar meowed. He looked down at Bramblepaw, Rowanpaw, and Bunnypaw. Then he looked to where Firekit and Fluffykit were sitting.

"Bramblepaw, Rowanpaw, and Bunnypaw, you have trained hard. You did your best in the battle for survival and during the flood. I shall reward you in return. Bramblepaw, Rowanpaw, and Bunnypaw, do you wish to protect and defend your Clan at the cost of your lives?" Ashstar asked them.

The three apprentices stared at him, surprised.

Then, Bunnypaw puffed out his chest and lifted his head proudly. "I do," He meowed.

"I do!" Rowanpaw meowed, his green eyes shining.

Bramblepaw still sat there, but then lifted his chin and said, "I do."

"Then by the powers of StarClan, I grant you your warrior names!" Ashstar meowed. "Bunnypaw, you shall now be known as Bunnypelt. StarClan honors you for being strong during the flood and having hope. Rowanpaw, you shall now be known as Rowandust, StarClan honors your brave heart and skill. Bramblepaw, you shall now be known as Bramblehawk, StarClan honors your courage, and I know you still mourn the loss of your brother, Hawkpaw," Ashstar meowed.

Bramblehawk dipped his head. "Thank you Ashstar. I will always remember Hawkpaw, and what it would be like if he was here right now standing beside me," He meowed. "I think we should give him his warrior name," Bramblehawk meowed.

Ashstar blinked and lifted his head to the stars. "Then Hawkpaw, if you're listening, you shall now be known as Hawkflight. You had a kind heart, and you made many friends," Ashstar meowed.

"Thank you, Ashstar," Graystripe meowed. "I really appreciate that name."

"Yes, thank you," Rowandust and Bramblehawk meowed together.

"Bramblehawk! Hawkflight! Rowandust! Bunnypelt!" The Clan cheered.

"Now I think it's time for WindClan to announce something," Ashstar meowed. He crawled down from the rock and went to sit beside Jaywing and Bunnypelt. Stoneheart and Cinderheart came over to sit beside him too.

Harespring looked around. "I've decided to let Mossheart and Tawnypelt join my Clan. Ashstar told me that Mossheart was a kittypet once, but since she decided to join my Clan first, I've decided that she will be my deputy when we get to the new home," Harespring meowed.

Kestrelflight nodded.

"And also, Fernkit and Rabbitkit will now be apprentices. They will start their first day of training. Fernkit you shall now be known as Fernpaw, and Rabbitkit, you shall now be known as Rabbitpaw, " Harespring meowed. "Ashstar, would you mind if two of your Clanmates became the mentors for Fernpaw and Rabbitpaw?"

"I wouldn't mind," Ashstar meowed. "Jaywing, do you mind mentoring Fernpaw?" He asked his daughter.

"I'd love to mentor her!" Jaywing mewed.

"Alright then, Jaywing will be your mentor, Fernpaw," Harespring meowed.

"I'll be Rabbitpaw's mentor!" Bunnypelt meowed.

"Ok. Bunnypelt, you can be Rabbitpaw's mentor," Harespring meowed.

"Wait!" Rabbitpaw mewed.

Harespring looked at him. "What's wrong?" He asked.

"I don't want to be a warrior!" Rabbitpaw meowed. "I want to be a medicine cat!" He mewed.

Harespring glared at him. "How could you in a time like this? WindClan needs warriors if it is to survive!" He growled.

"I know that!" Rabbitpaw cried. "But what will we do when Kestrelflight dies?" He growled.

Harespring flinched.

"Harespring, let Rabbitpaw be what he wants to be," Ashstar meowed. "Besides, your Clan would be stronger if you had a second medicine cat," He pointed out.

Harespring blinked at him. "I guess you're right," He sighed. "Rabbitpaw, your mentor will now be Kestrelflight," He meowed.

"Thank you!" Rabbitpaw meowed. He turned to Kestrelflight. "I want to start training right now!" He mewed.

"We should all go to sleep, actually," Ashstar meowed. "We need to rest. We'll need our energy if we're going to travel," Ashstar meowed.

"Yes," Harespring meowed. "And we still aren't sure how long we're going to travel for," He pointed out.

Ashstar walked to the hollow, his paws aching. He curled up, tucking his tail over his nose.

Jaywing ducked into the den and curled beside him. Cinderheart curled up on the other side of him.

Stoneheart's heart poked into the den. "Ashstar, would you like me to take watch?" He asked.

Ashstar opened one eye. "Yes," He meowed. He yawned and curled up tighter.

Bunnypelt ducked into the den, seeing Ashstar curled up with his daughter and mate. He looked at them, then stepped over them, going to the very back, where little space was.

Ashstar closed his eyes once more, but he opened them again only to see that he was standing in the dark. He looked behind him. A gray tom with amber eyes was looking at him, smiling.

"Wolffang?" Ashstar muttered.

"Yes, it's me!" Wolffang growled. "I can't believe I'm doing this but I'm here to give you a warning," He growled. "I'm just warning you about the rogues....ShadowClan," He murmured. "You better train your Clan, because we'll come after you soon," Wolffang meowed.

Ashstar flattened his ears.

"Don't get mad. I just gave you a warning," Wolffang growled. "Now you should be waking up."

Ashstar felt darkness cover his eyes. He then felt like his body was being pulled by a strong force. Then he opened his eyes, only to see that he was in the hollow again, safe. He got to his paws and stretched, careful not to wake the others sleeping around him. He crawled from the den, yawning. The sky was dark blue with a few stray clouds hanging around. The distance beyond the trees was starting to light up as the sun was trying to rise.

Ashstar saw Stoneheart sitting beside the slightly large rock where he'd made the new warriors.

Stoneheart's ears pricked and he turned around, seeing Ashstar. He dipped his head to his father. "Good morning, Ashstar," He meowed.

"Good morning, Stoneheart," Ashstar meowed.

Stoneheart narrowed his eyes. "You don't look so well," He meowed. "Did something happen last night?" He asked.

Ashstar sat beside him. "I had a dream," He meowed.

"Hold on," Stoneheart meowed. "Shouldn't we get Mothpaw and Alderheart?"

Ashstar didn't think they needed the medicine cats. "It's not a prophecy, it's a warning," He meowed.

"Who warned you?"  Stoneheart asked.

 "Wolffang did," Ashstar meowed.

Stoneheart looked at him. "Who's that?"

Ashstar realized that he never told any cat about Wolffang's death or his warrior name. "My son. He earned his warrior name and he's dead."

"Well that's good," Stoneheart meowed. "But what did he warn you about?"

"He said the rogues are coming for us," Ashstar explained. "He said that'll we'll need to train," Ashstar meowed.

"Then we need to find our new home quick!" Stoneheart gasped. "We need to have all four Clans like we once did!" He meowed.

"I know," Ashstar meowed. "And that's why I'm going to send out two patrols to search for it," He meowed.
