Chapter 4

"ThunderClan, attack!"  Jaykit mewled. She leaped on her brother, Stonekit.

"Hey!" He squeaked. He kicked Jaykit back with his hind paws.

"Stonekit! You never want to play with me!" Jaykit meowed.

"I don't want to!" He complained.

"You have to play flight!" Her father's meow startled her. She spun around to see Ashfur and her mother, Cinderheart.

"Kits! Kits!" Cinderheart meowed. "Be nice!"

Jaykit clawed at her small moss nest. She ripped off a tiny part and rolled it into a ball. "How about we play moss ball?" Jaykit asked.

"No!" Stonekit meowed.

"What game do you want to play?" Jaykit asked.

"I don't want to play! I want to sleep!" Stonekit meowed.

Jaykit turned to see Dovekit playing with Ivykit in the corner.

"Can I play with you?" She meowed.

"Sure!" Dovekit replied.

Jaykit trotted over to them. Why doesn't Stonekit won't to play with me?

"So....What game do you wanna play?" Jaykit asked.

"Go get us some moss if you want to play moss-ball!" Ivykit meowed.

Jaykit frowned. She ran out of the den. Why does it seem that every cat hates me?

"Hello, Jaykit," Bumblepaw meowed. "What are you doing out of the nursery?"

"None of your business," Jaykit retorted.

"Don't disrespect someone older than you! I just asked a question!" Bumblepaw complained.

Jaykit's ear twitched. "You'll have to catch me first!" Jaykit hissed. She dived into a clump of ferns and darted through the camp entrance.

"Hey!" Bumblepaw yowled.

Jaykit ran through the forest. She raced though ferns and ducked under tree roots. She hopped over rocks and came to a halt. A huge tree stood in front of her. "Perfect!" She whispered. She unsheathed her tiny claws and scrambled up the tree. She groaned as she came back down. Jaykit pricked her ears. She heard paw-steps coming her way! Jaykit darted behind the tree and kept running. She halted at a stream. She smelled something yucky. "Gross," She hissed.

"Jaykit, where are you?!" Bumblepaw was calling.

Jaykit jumped. And with that, she fell into the stream. "Help...." Her yowl was drowned out by the noise of the water. She was carried downstream. "Oh no! I'm heading towards the river!" She hissed. "Help!" She yowled. She flailed her paws helplessly in the air. Jaykit bumped into a rock and went under. She gasped in terror as water filled her nose and ears.  She touched the sandy bottom and was carried by the stream more. She swam upward and broke the surface. She gasped for air. The stream was getting wider. Jaykit looked farther ahead. She was heading towards the lake! Jaykit screamed in terror. She tried to push against the current. It was to strong and pushed her back and under. Jaykit rolled over onto her back and was thrown against the current. She mewled helplessly. Then something pushed past her. Something soft. Like a pelt. Maybe a cat! She scrambled upward and broke the surface. A faded cat was swimming with her. It was silver. She had pretty tabby markings and pushed a small stick towards Jaykit.

"Hold on to this. You'll be fine," She meowed.

Jaykit swam forward and grabbed the stick. The current dragged her legs and tail helplessly on. "Who are you?" Jaykit gasped.

"I am Silverstream," The she cat replied. Then all of a sudden she pushed a twig bed towards Jaykit and faded away.

"Wait....Don't go," Jaykit rasped. She pulled the twig bed towards her and tied it on the stick with the strong grass strands. Reeds were carefully weaved into it. Jaykit collapsed onto it. The moon floated in the sky. Oh StarClan, why did I run away?  Jaykit closed her eyes. "I have somewhere to sleep without drowning," She whispered. Someone will find me, she thought. She drifted helplessly into the lake now. If her little float sunk, she would drown for sure, not unless that cat called Silverstream had come back. "Hello? Any cat here? Silverstream? Any cat?" She called out. But it was hopeless. It was all just hopeless. But a clear voice rang in her ears. Don't worry little one, you'll be safe in time.

Jaykit awoke. The wind pushed her float towards the island. Then all of a sudden it pushed her float to strongly and it turned over and Jaykit went under. "Help!" She wailed. She clawed her way through the water but she sunk downward. "He-" She was cut off as water filled her mouth. The dirty black water choked her nostrils and mouth. Then she felt something under her. A cat was under her, pushing her up. "Silverstream?" She managed to choke out. She was lifted up and was back on her float. She shivered with cold. Her float was being pushed along.

"Oh StarClan! This kit is still alive!" The cat meowed.

Jaykit couldn't talk. The water had made her throat sore.

"Don't worry little one! You'll be safe once we get to the island shore!" The cat encouraged.

"W-who....." Jaykit choked up water. "A.....are y.....ou?"

"I'm Mistyfoot!" The she cat replied.

Jaykit was almost knocked off her paws as her float hit the island shore.

"Oh, sorry! Great StarClan, how did a ThunderClan kit make it here? You almost drowned!" Mistyfoot meowed. She licked Jaykit's head. "But you were brave!"

"Ne.....need to go......back," Jaykit whispered.

"Listen! You'll be staying in RiverClan camp for a while!" Mistyfoot meowed.

"W-why?" Jaykit managed to speak clearly.

"You are to young to make it back to ThunderClan!" Mistyfoot pointed out. "It would be a risk anyway to cross WindClan territory!"

"Thank you," Jaykit meowed.

Mistyfoot dipped her head. "Now I have to cross the tree bridge to get to our camp. Leopardstar will be waiting. She wanted me to hunt on the island. But as I was going back, I heard wailing and splashing and I looked back to see you. You were half-drowned. I'm surprised it was a kit!"

"I.....I just had no one to play with and I went out for a walk. Bumblepaw was looking for me and it got out of hand and I fell into the stream and I almost drowned. I meet a cat named Silverstream. She saved me and gave me this float," Jaykit stammered.

"Silverstream!" Mistyfoot gasped. "Crookedstar's daughter."

"Who is Crookedstar?" Jaykit asked.

"He was the leader before Leopardstar. Your Clan will be worried about you. They'll be looking for you," Mistyfoot meowed.

"They sure will," Jaykit meowed. "My father, Ashfur, and my mother, Cinderheart, will be worried. Maybe even my brother, Stonekit," Jaykit meowed. She turned to Mistyfoot, who was stopped dead in her tracks. Fear flashed in her eyes. "What's wrong?" She asked.

"My brother was Stonefur. He was the RiverClan deputy before me. He was killed by Blackstar- Blackfoot then- who was ordered by Tigerstar," Mistyfoot explained. "These times are hard. Every cat is losing their brother or sister. Like Stormfur. He lost his sister," Mistyfoot meowed.

"I would die if I had to to protect my brother!" Jaykit challenged.

"I would never harm you," Mistyfoot meowed. "Or your brother."

As they neared camp, Mistyfoot hurried on. "Come on!" She called.

Jaykit hurried forward but tripped over a small tree root. She scrambled to her paws, hoping that any cat didn't see her. As she walked through the camp entrance with Mistyfoot, she felt every cat starring at her.

"Mistyfoot! What have you brought here? I expected fish! Not ThunderClan kits!" Leopardstar padded forward. She glared at them.

"I was out hunting on the island like you said. As I was leaving, I heard splashing and wailing. It was a good thing I was there or this kit would of been fish-food!" Mistyfoot meowed. Her whiskers twitched.

"So, ThunderClan is teaching their kits how to swim I see?" Leopardstar meowed.

"But the poor kit fell in by-"

"I fell in by accident!" Jaykit cut Mistyfoot off. "I went out to take a walk and no cat knew! I accidently fell in the stream! Then some cat named Silverstream helped me by giving me a float!" Jaykit explained.

Shocked gasps echoed around her.

"Silverstream?"

"Silverstream helped you?"

"Silence!" Leopardstar yowled. "You can stay in our clan. But... you might have to wait before you go. It's to risky and dangerous to bring you back through WindClan territory!" Leopardstar meowed. "I'm surprised you didn't drown for a kit as small as you!"

Jaykit grumbled. Mistyfoot looked at her.

"Mothwing! Willowshine!" Leopardstar called. "Give some help to this half-drowned kit!" Leopardstar meowed as they ran across the clearing.

Jaykit's scruff was held by a dappled golden she cat. "It's ok. Everything will be ok," She reassured.
