Chapter 6

Bramblekit woke up from his mother's side, the first thunderstorm happened last night. Littlekit was already awake this morning whilst Shrewkit on the other paw refused to wake up in the morning. Bramblekit firmly nudged his mother awake "Mother? Is something happening outside?" Squirrelspark shrugged as she looked at him and then stood up in a big long stretch to take a peak through the snowy briars covering the nursery entrance. Bramblekit waited for his mother until she gradually strode over to him. "Well from what I see the snow is not that deep for you to not have your apprentice ceremonies, but it is also not deep enough for you to not be able to get the mouse bile to the elders," meowed Squirrelspark. "Alright alright I am going. When did Meadowstar say I will get my apprentice ceremony again?" meowed Bramblekit questioningly. "At sun set. Now go and get that mouse bile to the elders," Squirrelspark responded. Bramblekit padded into the elder's den and got the mouse bile, but for some reason today Firepaw was in anything but a good mood. "Hey I want Pinewing. He has the least amount of ticks out of all of the elders," meowed Firepaw with a hint of a snarl in her tone. "Yeah well he is my kin not your's so...," answered Bramblekit with a little harsh voice. "Don't you mean your Half-clan kin?" she spat at him, her light blue eyes coldly piercing her gaze. Bramblekit felt like there was a huge lump in his throat and decided to go to another elder so she doesn't see him cry. Only moments after, Firepaw realised what she said and started to feel remorse. After all this was a kit not an annoying apprentice who she could insult all day. Bramblekit recollected his composure already and looked up to see that the sun was already falling in the horizon and it made him start to bounce up and down excitedly. "Why are you so jubilant?" meowed Firepaw. "My apprentice ceremony should be just about now," mewed Bramblekit. Bramblekit waited until he heard his mother calling him. He instantly sprung from the snowy ground and stopped in front of his mother. "It's time. Both of your sisters are ready," meowed Squirrelspark and then licked each kit her gaze brimming with emotions. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the high branch," yowled Meadowstar from the top of the thick and entwined branches. Every cat immediately gathered under the high branch and looked up at their leader. "Bramblekit, Shrewkit and Littlekit, please join me on the high branch," meowed Meadowstar. All three kits climbed to sit next to her with joyful looks on their faces. "Bramblekit, Shrewkit and Littlekit all three of you have reached the age of six moons, and it is now time for all of you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Bramblepaw, Shrewpaw and Littlepaw. Bramblepaw you will be mentored by Rushshine. Littlepaw your mentor is Squirrelspark. Shrewpaw your mentor will be Lakespike. I hope all three of these experienced warriors pass down all they know on to you apprentices. Rushshine, Squirrelspark and Lakespike, you all are ready to take on an apprentice. You three will be the mentors of these apprentices until their warrior ceremony, I hope and expect that you pass on all you know and learnt from your previous apprenticeships to these apprentices," Meadowstar said ending the ceremony with a proud meow. Every single cat started chanting the newly-made apprentice's names. The three apprentices each touched their noses to their mentor's and then received a lick from behind the ear by Meadowstar. All the mentors then began to lead the apprentices out of the camp to show them around and familiarise them with the territory. Rushshine lead him around and showed him most of the jungle and the best places to hunt. "Alright now it is time for me to show you how to hunt," mewed Rushshine and Bramblepaw responded with a nod. Rushshine noticed a mouse scurrying and nibbling on something in the vegetation. "You have to make sure that when you move your paws stay quiet and don't give your presence away and crouch low. Mice and squirrels will hear your vibration on the ground, while lizards are masters of fooling us if they hear us if you're not careful," whispered Rushshine. Bramblepaw nodded again not wanting to lose the mouse. Rushshine then pounced on the mouse going in for its throat suffocating and killing it on the spot. "May I try now?" She nodded her approval to his question. He then copied his mentor's position and her hunting position when she pounced on the squirrel she found. This is my first catch as an apprentice! I will never forget this spot.
