Chapter 19

Bramblepaw woke up next to Heartpaw's dead body, and he stood up knowing that the elders were about to take him for burial. Bramblepaw then looked over and saw Braveclaw giving Forestberry some poppy seeds and chamomile herbs to soothe her from the grief of her lost kit. Firepaw was looking at her brother's motionless body, with grief clouding her gaze. Bramblepaw heard that Firepaw didn't eat anything and refused to take any herbs from Braveclaw. Bramblepaw then walked over to comfort the she-cat, he crouched beside her and began to lick her head. Firepaw didn't move away, but simply turned her head to stare into his pale yellow eyes. "He is in StarClan now and in a better place" meowed Bramblepaw. "But I want him here by my side," replied Firepaw neutrally. "I know you do, but even if he did survive I don't think he would be able to become a warrior; apparently Braveclaw said that he fractured both of his legs which means that he would spend the rest of his days struggling to even get to the fresh-kill pile... At least in StarClan that injury goes away and he can run like a normal apprentice again," meowed Bramblepaw and sighed exasperatedly. he got up and flicked his tail on the grieving apprentice's shoulder indicating for the calico she-cat to stay in her nest. He then padded over to the medicine cat's den and noticed that Braveclaw returned to her post. "No!! Greypaw, you can't use catchweed for the injuries. They're for poultices specifically," growled Braveclaw. "Sorry," meowed Greypaw back apologetically. "Can I get something for Firepaw?," asked Bramblepaw nervously. Braveclaw nodded at him and prodded Greypaw with her paw to get a batch of herbs ready. "Umm Braveclaw, we don't seem to have any heather flowers left," growled Greypaw with an irritated tone of voice. "I can get some. What do they look like?," meowed Bramblepaw eagerly, knowing that this will keep her mind off of her own grief. "It should be very easy to find as it grows in most of the shady areas in our territory. It is a type of nectar which is inside bell-shaped flowers," meowed Braveclaw. "I will go with him," blurted out Greypaw standing up clearly happy to get out of the den and stretch outside. "Ok, but don't you dare think you will get yourself out of me testing you on your knowledge of herbs," mewed Braveclaw whilst the sun rays made her white and black pelt gleam. The two apprenticed padded out of camp and passed the liana-vined tunnel that sheltered the entrance of the camp. "Are you going to the gathering?," asked Greypaw. Bramblepaw nodded in response to him as they travelled to the nearest shady place in their territory. Greypaw showed him the heather flower just in case Braveclaw didn't give him a good enough description. Eventually the were making the journey back in silence with the herbs in their mouths as they entered the medicine cat's den. Greypaw and Bramblepaw both  put the heather flowers they collected on the dusty ground next to the bracken-filled nest of the medicine cat's den. Braveclaw then took a few from the collected pile and chewed the whole flower before putting it into a herbal mixture she made earlier. "Give this to her," mewed Braveclaw. Bramblepaw then carried the bundle of herbs over to Firepaw. "Take these.  Braveclaw said that they'll ease your grief," meowed Bramblepaw and dropped the herb pile in between Firepaw's paws. "Let me guess it has poppy seeds in it right?," meowed Firepaw irritably.  "No there isn't any this time," lied Bramblepaw guilt pricking his pelt. "Ok fine," muttered Firepaw reluctantly as she swallowed the unpleasant herbs. Bramblepaw pressed his flank against the flame-coloured she-cat's flank and purred affectionately. She responded with an even louder purr and cuddled up close beside bramblepaw as they stretched out on the patch of grass. Rushshine then padded over to them and mercilessly nudged them up to their paws. "Come on you two lazy-bones. Both of you have trained long and hard and Meadowstar is going to prepare your assessments soon," mewed Rushshine and twitched her luscious tail. The apprentices instantly shot up exchanging excited glances with each other. They sprinted after Rushshine towards a clearing in the jungle filled with liana vines and many dense vegetation. They trained from dusk til dawn learning new moves and perfecting old ones as the darkness of the jungle swallowed their shadowy figures whole.
