Prologue

A heavy stillness hung over the Whispering Woods, broken only by the rustle of leaves and the distant call of a lone bird. The air was thick with anticipation, as if the forest itself held its breath. Through the towering trees, a figure moved gracefully, her silhouette barely visible in the dappled light.

She approached a clearing where a brown-speckled dragon lay coiled, her scales glistening like polished stone. Bowing her head slightly, the newcomer addressed her with respect. "Your Highness, are the eggs ready?" she asked, her voice a soft murmur in the tranquil air.

Luna, the dragon, lifted her head, her eyes reflecting the sunlight with an ancient wisdom. She shrugged, a gentle ripple running through her powerful frame. "I don't know, Ember," she replied thoughtfully. "Dragon eggs, especially those of the ember variety, take years to hatch."

The brown-speckled dragon snorted, sending a curl of smoke spiraling into the air. "Oh, I know that all too well," she said with a knowing smile. "My son took a whole decade before he decided it was safe enough to hatch."

The two dragons exchanged a glance filled with shared understanding and amusement. They knew well the patience required in their world, where time moved at its own pace and the birth of a dragon was an event worthy of waiting for. The forest around them seemed to relax, as if acknowledging the enduring bond between them and the promise of new life hidden within the unhatched eggs.

Out of the forest emerged a large black dragon, his scales gleaming like polished obsidian. He approached Luna with a gentle grace that belied his massive size, pressing his nose affectionately to hers. "Happy to see you, my love," he rumbled, his voice a deep, resonant purr.

Luna smiled warmly, her eyes lighting up at the sight of him. "Greetings, Alduin. It's nice to see you. How's the border patrol going?" she asked, nuzzling her mate affectionately.

Alduin sighed, flicking his spiky tail with a touch of frustration. "Tairnach is taking it harder than he should," he replied. "He doesn't like that we're leaving your egg within the Forest Clan territories."

Luna nodded, understanding the concern. "He's protective, like any of us would be," she said softly, glancing toward the edge of the clearing where their future lay cradled in nature's embrace. "But the Forest Clan has always been a safe haven for our kind."

Alduin's gaze softened as he looked at her. "I know, and I trust your judgment. It's just difficult to let go, even for a short while."

Together, they stood in the heart of the forest, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of their world, as they contemplated the future and the legacy they would leave behind.

Ember then rose to her feet, stretching her wings wide. "Excuse me, Your Highnesses," she said politely, before launching herself into the air. Her form quickly disappeared into the sky, leaving Luna and Alduin alone in the clearing.

Together, they turned their gaze to the egg nestled among the soft leaves and moss, its surface glimmering like a polished gem in the dappled sunlight.

"She will be perfect, Luna. I just know it," Alduin murmured, his voice filled with quiet conviction. He wrapped his wing around the white dragoness, pulling her close.

Luna sighed contentedly, resting her head against his side. "I hope so," she replied softly. "This place is the safest for her until she hatches. The Forest Clan will guard her well."

Alduin nodded, his eyes never leaving the egg that held their future. "We'll protect her with everything we have," he promised. The two dragons stood together in the serenity of the forest, united in their love and hope for the life that was soon to emerge.
