chapter ten; humming
Light years away from the Falcon, the Finalizer made it's approach on it's destination. General Hux watched as the planet, his greatest creation, came into view. A snow capped planet, covered in white. A enormous gash left its scare on the planet, it's true power revealing itself through the aura of red emulating from within itself.
The man marveled at the ginormous weapon, the very thought of it's power bringing him pride. He had crafted this, he had envisioned this. This was his doing.
The door behind the general opened, revealing a metallic solider. Captain Phasma stood at the ready, bearing news which the general was to know.
"General Hux, the fugitives have been spotted by the Gauvian Death Gang in the Western Regions. Apparently the droid and FN-2187 have boarded the Millennium Falcon with Han Solo and the wookie Chewbacca. One of the two girls has been identified as well."
Hux pried away from the magnificent sight, sighing as he heard the unfortunate news. He faced Phasma, "Well, who is she?"
It was quite possible that the hum of a ship was Mara's absolute favorite sound. It was music to her, under appreciated melodies vibrating around her. It assured her the vessel was working properly, the ship purring to tell her. For years, she had admired the sound, it feeling like a blanket of assurance around her. It reminded her of years ago, when it was just the ship singing to her in the dead of space, an only companion.
Mara was currently not alone this time. Something in the helm room sparked, Rey and Han yelling to each other while the peaceful singing of the ship was interrupted by the beeping of warning signals. When the blonde peeked around the corner, the scavenger was trying to fix something above the control panel that was emitting more gas.
"We need to convert all auxiliary power to-"
"Secondary tank. I got it." Han finished for Rey, turning to do the task. Rey spotted Mara, pointing to one of the tools on the ground, other hand still holding together the compressor.
"Hand me the tape." She commanded urgently, Mara rushing to do the deed. Only taking seconds to search through the tool box at her feet, she handed it to her as fast she could.
Solo was still pushing buttons to convert the leak to the spare tank," Be careful, she might steal it from right under you."
Mara gave an incredibly audible groan," Really, your still mad over the broken fighter? It was seven years ago, get over it!"
"You try losing 15,000 units thanks to a stupid teenager-"
"Wrench!" Rey shouted, throwing excess tape away to free her hand," And you two bickering like angered Teedos is not going to help us fix the ship!"
Both Han and Mara spun to glare at Rey, both offended at the comment and yelling back, "I am not a Teedo!"
The blonde handed Mara the wrench before attempting to go back and snap at Solo when Finn hollered back to the helm, "I need help with this giant hairy thing!"
Feeling that she was needed elsewhere and perhaps that fighting with the pilot wasn't the greatest idea when the whole ship was in utter chaos, Mara ran back to help Finn.
"Coming!" She called, falling in step with BB-8 to aid the poor guy. The girl and droid made their way to the injured wookie, who bellowed a deep roar upon seeing the two. BB-8 panicked at the over grown teddy bear, backing straight into Mara and tripping her while fleeing.
The droid beeped back something about leaving Mara to deal with the wookie on her own. She shook her head as she got up off the floor, unhappy with the ball.
"Well aren't you loyal." She spat back at the droid before going to pry a sick looking Finn out of Chewbacca's grip. The ship then dove to the right, both of them losing their balance and falling straight into the wookie' injured arm. The animal roared in pain, flinging both Finn and Mara off him with such force that the blonde went flying across the room. First her back hit the cool, hard floor, the rest of her body following. Pain shot through her spine, Mara wincing as she tried to get to her feet.
"You hurt Chewie, you're going to deal with me!" Han's voice yelled from the helm, Mara still rubbing her neck from the impact.
"Hurt him?" Finn had managed to make it to the iterated wookie before her, trying to keep Chewbacca still enough to bandage his wounds," He almost killed me six times!"
The beast's furry hands made their way to Finn's throat, giving him a very intimidating glare. The man choked out a meager response, clawing at the hold on his neck, "Which is fine."
Mara steadied herself on the wall, waiting until the momentary pain faded. When it had, the wookie had released Finn from his death grip. Still intent on trying to help the poor guy, her hand went to Chewbacca's extra arm. Finn recovered quickly, seizing the medical tape while the blonde struggled against the angry wookie.
She gave a thin smile, gritting her teeth, "You know, you could hurry up and wrap him because I'm about to have my head taken off!"
Finn nodded excessively as he began to wrap the tape around the wound, flinching whenever Chewie moved his head, whispering, "That's okay buddy, just don't kill me. Please don't kill me, please don't kill me..."
When the injury was finally wrapped, Mara released her grip from Chewbacca. Backing away fast, she grabbed Po- Finn's jacket so he wouldn't be further harmed by the wookie. The alarming beeping that had not stopped since they jumped to light speed ceased, the flashing lights returning to normal. The melodic hum around them began again while Mara rested on the nearest seat.
Han Solo walked past BB-8, muttering something about the droid resembling a ball. Rey followed, looking quite pleased with herself as she discarded what looked like a compressor into the trash shoot. Mara let out a huff, greatful she had time to rest in the midst of the hectic day.
Her gaze went to her hands, examining them. A few cuts littered palms, her knuckles tinted a blue-purple with bruises from punching and blocking. Familiar calluses gave her fingers a ruff texture, but overall she was happy of the shape they were in. Mara had missed fighting, she had missed doing something with her life. She had missed the space she was so fond of, the stars that seemed so far away. Now all she needed was a one-man fighter and she'd be perfectly content.
Finn sat down next to Mara, putting his elbow on the table before them. A button clicked, a hologram coming to life on the table. A game of sorts displayed itself, filled with creatures of all kinds. Mara raised an eyebrow at Finn, finding his clumsiness refreshing and entertaining to watch.
"So," Solo spoke up, standing at the front of the room next to Chewie while the three younger looked at him," Fugitives eh?"
Mara, who had been a fugitive for some time now, fought off a smirk. Rey began to explain herself and the other two, gesturing to Finn first, "The First Order just wanted the map. Finn is with the Resistence, me and Mara are just scavengers."
Solo's eyes scanned each one of the three, looking at the trio he had just decided to help. He then addressed BB-8, "Well, let's see what you've got."
The droid, who was between Mara and Rey, turned his head both their way's to make sure it was okay with them. Rey pointed him to the middle of the room," Go ahead."
BB-8 now looked to Mara for approval, who gave a similar answer, "You're fine, buddy. Just show 'em."
The spherical droid rolled into the middle of the room, positioning himself off-center to give the hologram space. As the little droid projected the map, the room light up. A blue solar system was presented, each small ball of a planet rotating on its own. Mara came to stand next to Rey as they watched the galaxy in front of them.
The blonde looked over to Rey to see her reaction. The native scavenger marveled at the technology, never seeing something this advanced before. Rey met Mara's gaze, a wonderful smile stretching across her face in excitement. On the other side of her, Finn shared similar enthusiasm, searching the map for any indication of where the lost Jedi was.
Han Solo's anticipation was evident to, walking into the projection," It's just a piece."
The old man began to study it at different angles, his words an absentminded ramble of his thoughts, "Ever since Luke disappeared, people been looking for him."
"Why did he leave?" Rey questioned, her line of sight falling away from the stars in front of her to Han. The three younger watched as the man continued to explain.
"He was training a new generation of Jedi. One boy, an apprentice, turned against him and destroyed it all. Luke felt responsible, and he just walked away from it all."
Mara really didn't want to assume anything at this point. She still was fighting with the concept that she even believed in these tall tales, no matter what was unfolding in front of her. But a rouge Jedi who destroyed it all? Sounded a hell of a lot like a little Kylo Ren screwing everything up as usual. But then again, assuming wasn't the best route right now.
Finn had taken another step closer to the hologram and was now right in line with Mara and Rey,"Do you know what happened to him?"
Solo shrugged, putting his hands on his hips as he continued through the hologram, "A lot of rumors. Stories. People who knew him best think he went looking for the first Jedi temple."
"The Jedi were real?" Rey's face had changed from excitement to curiosity, titling her head.
Mara bit her lip before asking another question, choosing her words carefully, "Does that mean the Force is as well?"
The man finally stop turning, standing directly in front of the three younger. Yearning for knowledge, desperate for the truth. Thrilled by the tales they were told as children. Even Mara, a usual skeptic who had see actions that might be only explained as magic many times, was enticed by the idea of a greater thing than herself.
Han gave a genuine smile, remembering a time when his own child had that same wonder in his eyes, "I used to wonder that myself. I thought is was a bunch of mumbo-jumbo. A magical power holding together good and evil, the dark side and the light. The crazy thing is.....it's true. All of it. The Force, the Jedi. It's all true."
Agonizing seconds lingered in between the words as everyone soaked it in. The tales they'd been told by many people were true; the light sabers, the battles, the mysterious force, the Sith and Jedi...
Within thirty seconds, Mara deemed it to quiet for her taste. Clapping her hands together and filling the room with the sharp sound, she put on a an over-exaggerated smile, "Well, I think I need more alcohol in my system before that all makes sense, but overall it's incredibly fascinating. Now, where is this ship taking us?"
BB-8 stopped the hologram, the galaxy of planets fading away. Han came out of his poetic mood, moving back towards the helm, "You wanted my help, you're getting it. We're going to see an old friend. She'll get your droid home. Ever been to Tokadana?"
"Once," The blonde answered, patting her droid on the head as he rolled by her, "All forest, no Ewoks."
"Exactly why I like it. I'll tell you all when we're there." Solo went back up to his seat just as Rey turned to Mara, scowling to try to hide her obvious excitement.
"You had to mention drinking at a time like that." She joked, playfully hitting her friend in the arm while going to sit down at the table.
Mara to the seat next to her, shrugging while a giving a small smirk of enjoyment, "What can I say, I miss life outside of Jakku. Good beer, better looking men, better looking women, no Unkar, actual working technology, people besides lying traders to talk to, no sand whatsoever, the list is endless. Now all I need is to actually set foot on a planet besides a scorching wasteland and it'll be all good."
Rey's joyous smile was evident, laughing at Mara's answer. Her face seemed to fall somewhat, her forehead crinkling as she thought. Mara recognized the face, nudging her with her shoulder, "And how's this whole experience for you, eh? Must've been along time since you've been in space."
The scavenger shook her head, trying to find the words to what she was feeling. So many mixed emotions, "Well, quite thrilling. I've never had so many people try to kill me at once-ow!"
Mara attempted to punch Rey in a playful manner, but it came off a little stronger than she had intended, "Stop being cynical; that's my job. No, c'mon, tell me what you really think."
Maybe somewhere inside her, Mara hoped Rey didn't want to go back to Jakku. She knew that the scavenger would want to go back to wait for whoever she was hoping would come for her. But now they were free, in space where Mara was most at home. She wanted to stay and missed this life with all her heart. If Rey went back to Jakku after all was said and done, Mara wouldn't know what to do. She couldn't just leave her side, but at the same time she couldn't go back to what was her personal prison. She needed to convince Rey that the galaxy was far more beautiful and important than a wasting planet.
Rey was about to say her alternate answer when Han hollered back to them, "This is our stop!"
Finn, Mara, Rey, Chewie and BB-8 went to the helm, the wookie seating himself in his rightful place in the copilot's chair. The ship jumped out of hyperspace, throwing them back into a normal speed. A planet came into view, blue sea dotted green painting the surface. As the Falcon descended down and through the atmosphere, an array of islands were seen. They headed directly towards one, the spots of green becoming trees and grass. Within seconds, they were gliding over a small lake, watching as the trees became taller then the Falcon.
"I didn't know there was this much green in the whole galaxy." Rey whispered, enchanted by the view before her.
Beside her, Mara remembered the last time she'd been to Takodana. It was almost six years ago, barely an adult with that old Headhunter fighter. Takodana was where she first met Bala-Tik and the Gauvian gang. This was before they'd cheated her and left Mara for dead, but she'd always admired the swath of lush nature the place held. It differed so much from her home planet of Mandalore, so wondrous to her younger self.
Yet on this beautiful place, her past would catch up with her.
