Chapter 9: Day 5

-Lionblaze-
Lionblaze awoke to a small nudge from Moonkit. The kit had taken that night's watch. However she was trembling and clearly terrified.
"What's wrong?" He asked and then he heard it. A whimpering cat.
Lionblaze stood up. They had moved to a spacious badger den after the storm had filled their burrow beneath a bush with water.
Cautiously, Lionblaze slipped out of the den. His eyes scanned the clearing and then he saw it. Heathertail.
However, Heathertail's body was trembling and many, many wounds covered her body.
"Heathertail." Lionblaze called out and the she cat turned her head.
"Lionblaze!" She ran forward, or, limped to Lionblaze, her face filled with joy.

"I knew I'd find you!" She mewed and Lionblaze swallowed the lump in his throat. What if Cinderheart saw this? And besides, Heathertail had betrayed him, hated him. She was just trying to make him pity her.

"Who did this to you?" He asked, not really concerned about her health and more about who would pose a threat.
"One of the tribe cats." Lionblaze didn't believe her. No scratches, just large scrapes and probably bruises. As well as a large bite on her hind leg.
"We don't have medicine to help you." Lionblaze hoped the cats didn't hate him for denying her when he could help.
"A-As long as I have yo-" Heathertail was cut off by a bloody Dawnpelt staggering through the bushes before collapsing to the ground.
"Dawnpelt!" Lionblaze gasped and her one remaining eye looked at him.
"D-Dogs...." she coughed out before going limp. Then it hit him. All the deaths.

Boulderpaw, Skypelt, Bumblestripe and Brook. They all may have been dogs.
A loud wail echoed through the air, followed by thunder.

"Jag..." and another thunder blast sounded.
Dawnpelt and Jag were dead. And the wail wasn't far off.
"Moonkit! Whitekit! Get out and climb a tree!" Lionblaze yowled and the two kits staggered out of the den. Lionblaze was about to herd them up a nearby tree when Heathertail lunged at Lionblaze, clawing at his throat.

Lionblaze duckes away and growled at her. Heathertail latched her forelegs around his neck and pulled him to the ground. Heathertail threw blows at him, but it only sustained a small scratch above his eye that didn't even bleed.
Lionblaze sank his teeth into her outstretched leg and she let out a yowl, throwing a heavy blow to the head. Lionblaze staggered sideways, the world spinning as the new cut on his forehead began to drip blood.
Lionblaze could hardly see straight but he lunged out with claws unsheathed and felt the tear of flesh and the warmth of blood spilling onto his pelt.
Lionblaze's vision began to straighten and he ran to a nearby tree. Loud barks and howls of approaching dogs sent his body shaking.
He scanned the clearing for the kits but they weren't there. He hoped for the best and scrambled up a tree, only to see Moonkit dangling from a branch by her forepaws. Whitekit was higher up. Lionblaze grasped at her scruff and carried her up to a higher branch. He looked down to see Heathertail staggering for the tree, attempting to climb up with her heavily bleeding face.
A long and deep gash went down her eye, past her muzzle and ended halfway down her throat. It wasn't enough to kill her or to paralyse her with the immense blood loss and pain but enough that it would kill her within hours if untreated.

Then the dogs came in. They all surrounded Heathertail whose head swiveled around. She was horrified.
She turned back to the tree and tried to climb up but her hindered foreleg failed to aid her.
"Lionblaze! Lionblaze help me!" She wailed and Lionblaze glared back down at her. Then the dogs lunged forward.
It was all just a bloody blur of teeth and fur as the dogs ripped Heathertail apart. Deep down Lionblaze knew he could have scrambled down and pulled her up. That due to his denial to save her, she was now suffering a painful death.
Only when the thunder had sounded did the dogs abandon their kill. Heathertail was just a heap of fur and blood, barely resemblant of a cat. Only one eye remained and it was trained on Lionblaze and full of sadness and fear.
Lionblaze bit back the tears that threatened him. He would not mourn this cat. This was the Warrior Games. Only one would win.

-Dovewing-
Tigerheart stared at me
