Chapter 6: The Fallen
-Bumblestripe-
Bumblestripe's tail flicked over his paw. The sun was beginning to set. It was beautiful. However Bumblestripe did not attribute anything to the beauty. His back fur was matted with blood and he had a deep scratch on his shoulder. However he was fine with it. In return he had given Tawnypelt an ugly scar and gained a pack of supplies. She had surprised him, clearly expecting to quickly pick him off. Yet Bumblestripe had been sure someone was following him and was thankful for his bone claws. Tawnypelt had ran off with a deep wound along her neck and shoulder. He was sure she would have died. Unless she was part of the alliance between her clanmates and the Tribe. One other thunder clap had sounded that day, though Bumblestripe didn't know who.
"Six cats." Bumblestripe murmured, "18 tributes left." He hoped one of them was Dovewing. He knew that one, or both of them were going to die. And Bumblestripe wanted to be as close to Dovewing as possible when death came for him. He looked up at the sky as Silverpelt began to dot the dark blue stretch above his head. Then a loud sound began to play and Bumblestripe jumped.
It reminded him of the songs birds sang only this one was not the work of birds. Then something appeared in the sky. Clearly not of Silverpelt.
Crowfrost's face appeared and Bumblestripe took a moment to mourn the Shadowclan warrior before the face changed to Mintfur and Bumblestripe figured he would mourn after he saw all the dead cats. Then it changed to Nightcloud.
Crowfeather must be griefed.
Then Jasminestar. Then Graymist.
Bumblestripe was about to bow his head in mourning when he remembered something. He had heard a sixth thunder clap not to long ago.
He looked back up at the sky to see another cat's face. He didn't recognize it for a moment but then realized it was one of the tribe cats.
Pebble.
Bumblestripe watched as the blue light faded from the sky and he lowered his head.
"May their spirits rest with Starclan." He breathed before adding. "And the Tribe of Endless Hunting." Bumblestripe was about to settle down in the soft grass near his pack when the sound of snapping branches caught his attention. Thinking quickly, Bumblestripe snatched up his pack and darted to the roots of a nearby elm.
"Great. I lost my leader and got stuck in a death trap with 24 other cats. 18 now. And now I got a horrid pain in my neck! This day can't possibly get worse!" Bumblestripe recognized Skypelt. One of the mystery warriors. He walked over to the spot Bumblestripe had been laying and stiffened. He had caught Bumblestripe's scent! Bumblestripe pondered whether to walk out, run away, or attack.
"I know your there. Please, come out." Bumblestripe stiffened before stepping out of the shadows. His bone claws glistening in the pale moonlight.
"Hello, Skypelt." Bumblestripe greeted and the tom looked at him and did not reply. Soon the silence became to much for Bumblestripe to bear.
"Well?" Bumblestripe asked and Skypelt smiled.
"You didn't attack me." He stated and Bumblestripe tilted his head.
"Why would I?" Bumblestripe asked, trying to ignore how stupid the question sounded.
"Well. We're in an arena to fight to the death and it would get you one step closer to escaping. That and I was perfectly vulnerable right there."
Bumblestripe twitched his tail. Skypelt had a point. But he had one that he held close.
"I haven't given up the warrior code just yet. Unlike some of the others." Bumblestripe's gaze flickered into the valley he had just struggled out of to avoid being ripped apart by the newly formed alliance.
"Yeah. I saw what the Shadowclan tom did to Jasminestar. Its just my luck I didn't have any weapons or I would have thrown myself at him and probably get killed in the process. Say.... do you want to be allies?" Skypelt seemingly asked out of nowhere and Bumblestripe flexed his claws.
He could attack and chase Skypelt back down into the small valley of the Cornucopia to be picked off by less code holding cats. Or he could let Skypelt live and they could share supplies. Bumblestripe lowered his head in defeat and nodded.
"Alrighty then. What'cha got there?" Skypelt looked at Bumblestripe's pack which he only now realized was splattered in his and Tawnypelt's blood.
"Tawnypelt's bag." The color began to drain from Skypelt's face when Bumblestripe quickly explained his meeting with the she cat. Skypelt stifly nodded and opened the bag, pulling out a cylinder about the size of his leg and when he tilted it one way, water dripped out. The two toms, having been dehydrated after running the entire day, quickly drinked up what they needed before setting the cylinder back in the pack and took out the remaining supplies. Two fat-ish mice and cobwebs wrapped around some herbs. It wasn't much but at least it will get them halfway in the survival terms of the game.
"Hey. Is your neck okay?" Bumblestripe asked, remembering the complaining Skypelt had done before they allied.
"It hurts a bit but I think its just because of stiffness or something." Skypelt excused and Bumblestripe let it drop.
The two toms shared a mouse and packed away the other due to the fact they were not sure when they may have a chance to hunt.
-Back at the Cornucopia-
Talon looked down at Pebble's body.
"Stupid Crowfeather." He growled.
The tom had ambushed Pebble when the others had left her to rest near the edge of horn of the Cornucopia. Crowfeather had lunged at her from the bushes and killed her when she tried to warn the others that he was stealing supplies. He had made off with plenty of supplies and had stabbed Pebble with a sharp stick in the back of her neck.
It made Talon angry. He swore he would kill Crowfeather the moment he got the chance. He looked over at Tigerheart who was just staring into the woods.
"Hey." Talon turned to see Dawnpelt sitting beside him.
"Hi." He gruffly replied.
"I'm sorry about Pebble." She looked at the muscular tom, hoping her apology had made him feel at least a little better.
"I didn't know her very long, but I promise. When we find Crowfeather, he will pay. For stealing and for killing Pebble." This made Talon flex his claws. He hoped that time would be soon. He turned to Dawnpelt with a grin.
"Can't wait." He growled.
-Dovewing-
Dovewing grinned at Rushpaw's catch. Despite the rich territory, prey wasn't as common as Dovewing would expect. However, there was quite a bit of fish in the river.
The three cats began to eat, thankful for their meal.
"Hey, Boulderpaw. Why didn't you join the Tribe Alliance with your clanmates?" Rushpaw asked and Boulderpaw looked at him.
"I wasn't invited to." He replied before taking another bite of fish.
"I was. I decided just to truce with them. Bumblestripe did the same." Then Dovewing remembered. Bumblestripe and Hollyleaf and Lionblaze!
She had to find them!
Dovewing jumped up and the two apprentices stared at her.
"My clanmates!"
"Its too late to look for them now." Rushpaw told her and Dovewing realized it was true. She sighed and crawled over to the straggly tree and crawled inside. She knew her clanmates could fare well without her but she just wanted to see them.
And with that, Dovewing fell into a dreamless sleep.
