Chapter 5: Boom

Dovewing paced around the small room. In one corner was a circular rock wrapped in vines that would take her to the arena. Then Oakheart came in and she turned to him.

"Oakheart! I'm scared!" She whimpered, cringing at how pathetic her voice sounded.

"Calm down and take deep breaths. You won't think straight if your panicking." Oakheart said, pressing his paw against her shoulder. Dovewing nodded and took deep breaths as she was told.
"Now. There will be a cornucopia in the middle of the circle of tributes. Don't go in there. Thats where the bloodbath will occur. The best thing you could do is grab one of the small bags near the edge of the cornucopia. But put as much distance between you and other tributes. Alright?"
Dovewing noddes
"What if someone chases after me?" Dovewing asked
"Then run as fast as you can. If they're cats who don't climb trees, climb one." Oakheart advised

"10 seconds." A voice called out and Oakheart nuged her onto the rock, grabbing a hanging vine in his mouth.

"Remember. Don't step off your rock before the countdown finishes." Dovewing flicked her ear and then Oakheart tugged on the vine and the rock lifted up.

The sudden light blinded Dovewing for a moment. She blinked her eyes and looked around her. The other tributes stood on rocks which had been placed in a large circle. Lionblaze was three tributes to her right and Hollyleaf five tributes after him. There was about a fox length of space between each tribute. The arena was forest surrounding the tributes, mountains with forest on top were to Dovewing's right and to her left was trees but amidst all the greenery you could see a faint blue. A lake.

"10, 9, 8."
The Countdown!
"7, 6, 5."
Every tribute looked around nervously.
"4, 3, 2."
They all gave their final prayers to Starclan.
"1." BOOM!!!
Every tribute turned to see one of the rocks had exploded. Midst all the charred earth lay a dead tribute. Crowfrost had stepped off his rock to early.
"0! Good luck! And may the odds be ever in your favor!" A loud blast of thunder finished off the sentence and the bloodbath began.

Dovewing saw a nearby pack and snatched it up in her jaws before fleeing the Cornucopia, not wanting to stay behind to see the inevitable carnage.
--
Crowfeather lunged for the nearest tribute who happened to be Dawnpelt. He raked his claws down her side, blood spraying across the ground as Dawnpelt cried out in agony. She snapped at the nearest part of Crowfeather and tugged with all her might. Crowfeather screamed as his ear was ripped down the center and he forced himself into Dawnpelt's side, sending her sprawling a few mouse lengths away. Crowfeather turned to see Nightcloud with a sharp stick in her jaws and a fresh cut along her cheek. Behind her was a limping Pebble with a deep wound in her shoulder. "Should I finish her off?" Nightcloud asked but Crowfeather shook his head.

Rushpaw grabbed a set of bone claws and managed to attach them. Boulderpaw ran over with a scratch on his flank and a bag in his mouth. The two nodded and darted in the direction of the mountains.

Jag slashed at Minfur's exposed belly with steel claws, sending him falling to the ground as blood bubbled up along his lips before his body went into convulsions. A loud crack of thunder symbolized the Riverclan tom was dead. Jag turned his head to see Pebble limping towards him, blood dripping from her shoulder. A second crack of thunder echoed around the arena as Talon slashed through a charging Nightcloud with his tail Slasher. Crowfeather let out a wail but knew he didn't stand a chance against the muscular Tribe cat and fled.

Tigerheart and Talon ran over to Jag and Pebble, blood staining their claws.

"That's three cats dead." Tigerheart panted and a fourth crack of thunder filled their ears. "Make that four."

"Should we kill any more?" Jag asked, starting to enjoy the feeling of victory over the dead cats.

"If any come to close to our supplies. Then you can." Brook called out as she walked over, her lips stained in blood.

"Who killed who?" Pebble asked

"I killed Mintfur. Talon killed Nightcloud. The explosion killed Crowfrost. The fourth one I have no idea." Jag reported and Tigerheart fliked his tail.
"I gave Jasminestar a good slash to the neck. She probably died when I left her." Tigerheart replied.

"That leaves 20 living tributes including us." Brook deduced

"14 tributes outside the alliance. I last saw Dawnpelt attacking Graymist." Tigerheart began to lick the blood from his paws.

A loud blast of thunder caught the alliance's attention.

"I hope that was Graymist." Pebble murmured and their questions were answered when Dawnpelt emerged from the bushes.

"It was. We shouldn't be seeing any of the Riverclan tributes soon." Dawnpelt sat down beside her allies and began to clean her fur of, presumably, Graymist's blood.

"13 other tributes to hunt." Jag said with a grin.

"First lets make sure none of the other tributes are hiding in the cornucopia." Brook muttered and looked at Pebble and Dawnpelt.
"And then treat our wounds."

-Lionblaze-
His first priority was to find Hollyleaf. He had to make sure that one of those thunder claps hadn't been hers. He ran through the forest, his bag thumping against his back. Lionblaze yelped as a bramble tendril caught his paw and made him fall to the ground. He suddenly realized how stupid he had been and that everyone within that part of the forest could have heard him. He held his breath as he awaited for the pawsteps that would symbolize that another tribute was nearby.
He heard the sound of crunching undergrowth and he scrambled up a nearby tree, heart pounding as he held still, clinging to the trunk desperately.

"I heard something." Someone called out and out walked the cat Lionblaze least expected. Whitekit.
"Are you sure it wasn't a scary tribe cat?" Moonkit crept out of the bushes.
"It was a yelp. It could be one of the apprentices! Or Skypelt!" Whitekit replied and scanned the area, sniffing at the tendril Lionblaze had got tripped on.
"No. It was someone else. That gold tom from Thunderclan....uh.. what was his name?" Whitekit pondered and Lionblaze noticed the pack on Moonkit's back.
Lionblaze began to slowly climb down the trunk of the tree.
"We should leave! He may have a weapon and he's probably nearby!" Moonkit was about to flew when Lionblaze lost his footing and tumbled down to the ground in front of Whitekit.
"Ah! I told you!" Moonkit squeaked.
Lionblaze scrambled to his paws, shaking the leaves out of his pelt.
"Its okay. I'm not going to hurt you!" Lionblaze replied, tugging the small pieces of brambles that had snagged into his fur while he was running.
"How do we know we can trust you?" Whitekit asked

"I am a descendant of Firestar. I was looking for my sister, Hollyleaf. That and I didn't kill or fight any cat." Lionblaze's blood free pelt was evidence.

Moonkit still gave him an untrusting look. Whitekit smiled.
"Alright. Do you want to see what supplies we have?" She asked and Lionblaze pulled off his own pack.
"I don't really know what I got." He murmured and Moonkit smiled.
"Lets find us a camp. Then we can check our resources." Lionblaze nodded and picked up his pack in his mouth and followed the kits as they walked through the forest in search of camp. Lionblaze hoped his sister would find him soon

-Dovewing-
Dovewing ran through the forest. She was searching for the apprentices who had went in the direction of the small mountains. She was hoping to form an alliance with them, kinda wanting to have some company in the arena. However she soon had to slow her pace as her legs were burning and her lungs aching and the weight of her pack seemed to grow heavier. She slowed her pace to a walk and looked around. The lush green light of the forest comforted her. Suddenly the underbrush thinned out and Dovewing found herself in a clearing one spot let light flow in through the thick tree canopy. There was a river with a cluster of rocks on the side across from Dovewing and a large tree with root a that twined over and around them. There was a spot in the tree trunk that could provide good shelter.

Dovewing smiled and sat down, taking off her pack and opening it. She emptied out the supplies and looked at them.
"One paw set of steel claws. Some vines and herbs." Dovewing smiled. However she had no food and the herbs were to be saved for when she was injured or sick. Suddenly realizing how dry her throat was, Dovewing leaned over and took a sip of the crisp cold water. It was clean.

"Aw. All we got was a few cobwebs!" A voice whined and Dovewing stood still. Too worried to move.
"At least we can patch up any wounds. Now c'mon I think I saw a nice clearing to stay in over here." Dovewing straightened up and began to quietly put her supplies into the pack but before she could, two cats emerged from the bushes.
Rushpaw and Boulderpaw.
"Someone else is here!" Boulderpaw growled and Dovewing stiffened.
"W-wait!" Dovewing held up her paw.
"Why? Why shouldn't we kill you?" Rushpaw asked, lashing his tail.
"I-I have supplies! Plus I could probably take you both down if you tried." Dovewing didn't like threatening the apprentices but she knew that in these games that one of them had to survive and this could be her life on the line.

"Oh really?" Boulderpaw asked and lunged forward, knocking him and Dovewing into the river. Memories of the beavers and the dam flooded Dovewing's mind and she used her one armed paw to dig into the river bed. She turned, blinking water from her eyes so she could find Bouldrpaw. She saw the gray apprentice flailing around in the river, clearly struggling to carry his weight above the surface. Fovewing craned her neck out and grabbed him by his scruff. With a large heave of her strength, Dovewing pushed her and Boulderpaw onto the river bank.

She lay on the ground trying to catch her breath, hoping the Riverclan apprentice that had witnessed all of it wouldn't take advantage of her weakness to kill her. Luckily, he didn't.

"Y-you saved me.." Boulderpaw heaved and Dovewing nodded, sitting up and began to groom her soaked pelt.
"Yeah. Couldn't let an apprentice die when he has a chance to live. Right?" Dovewing smiled at the apprentices.
"Well thanks for saving my friend. Allies?" Rushpaw asked and Dovewing smiled.
"That's why I came here in the first place. So yeah." Dovewing smiled. She had made some friends in the face of death. That was great.

-Hollyleaf-
Hollyleaf staggered through the tall grass. She had been walking for, Starclan knows how long! The burning cut on her flank wasn't much help either.
She looked around, hoping to find a shady spot near a water source. In order to occupy her thoughts from the pain in her flank.

Crowfrost had stepped off his rock to soon, Mintfur's belly had been split by Jag, Talon had slashed Nightcloud with his tail slasher and Jasminestar had gotten a slash to the neck, by who, Hollyleaf did not know. Then there was a fifth thunder clap which meant that someone else had died. So five tributes had been killed in the Cornucopia, leaving 19 tributes left in the arena.

Hollyleaf felt the warmth of the sun vanish as she reached the forest edge. She smiled and continued walking. Knowing a water source should be nearby. She was right. Hollyleaf soon came across a stream sprouting from a few rocks. She laid down beside it and began sorting through her supplies.

"A tail Slasher. Some herbs and a sparrow." Hollyleaf grinned and took a bite from her sparrow and pushed it back into her pack, being sure to preserve her prey as long as possible. She grabbed the bundle of cobwebs from her bag and a marigold leaf. She couldn't use a lot in case of future injuries. Taking one cobweb from the bundle, she wrapped it over her wound. The wound imeadietly felt much better and she smiled and fell asleep. Forgetting where she was.
