Chapter 14: Welcome Home
-Dovewing-
The world hurt to Dovewing. Everything hurt. For a moment she wondered if she had slept wrong or sat on a thorn. Then the tree, The Games and Tigerheart came back to her.
Am I dead?!
Dovewing attempted to force her limbs to move but they refused. Dovewing let out a growl of frustration. Only to quickly realize she could move her face and make sounds. She forced her eyelids open to be greeted with white. It took her a few agonizingly long moments for Dovewing's eyes to adjust. She was on a flat slab and had many tendrils buried in her fur and her limbs were strapped down to the slab.
She let out a groan and attempted to get up. The tendrils were hooked up to off looking things. Dovewing finally gave up and fell back into her sleepy state.
Dovewing awoke again to find her limbs had been freed but a strap was wrapped around the middle of her body. She stretched her cramped limbs only to see a cat walk into the room. She loosened the strap and allowed Dovewing to sit up. The cat then pushed a flat slab of something which had quite a bit of different dishes. Dovewing questioned why the cat didn't speak but then Tigerheart's green eyes flooded her vision.
"Wait!" She called out as the cat turned to leave.
"I-Is Tigerheart okay?" She asked and the cat nodded and for a split second, Dovewing saw the inside of her mouth. This cat had a large pink stub in her mouth, not a tongue.
Dovewing's stomach twisted and she barely managed to sputter out. "Thank you." The cat continued out the door and closed it.
Dovewing looked down at the food to see a note on it.
Don't make yourself explode . -Willow
Dovewing felt comforted by the dash of comedy and managed to push the cat's tongue, or lack thereof, to the back of her mind and began to indulge herself on the food, however the worry about Tigerheart forced her to stop. Dovewing sighed and looked down.
She had no sign of injuries even from before the Games. The cats probably healed her up to make her look flawless. Dovewing sighed and ran her paws along the smooth, lush fur.
It was a few naps later before Dovewing had visitors. She was released from her strap and was loved on by Oakfur and Willow
"I'm so happy for you! The Capital has been going on and on about you and Tigerheart! The Star-Crossed lovers!" Dovewing felt repulsed by the Rogues obsessing over her and Tigerheart's genuine love.
"Yes! Now there will be a huge celebration when you get back to your Clan! But we better get you ready for you and Tigerheart's interview later tonight!" Oakfur's mind seemed all over the place.
"Interview?" Dovewing asked
"Yes. Now come along. You and me have only a few hours to get you ready!"
Dovewing shakily stood up, and with the two cats' aid, she managed to make her way to the design room.
--
"You look amazing." Oakfur chirped and Dovewing's ears lit up with embarasment.
Dovewing's fur was smoothed out and held golden and normal dove feathers. Oakfur had also added some sort of 'eyeliner' that made her look uneccesarily elegant. She wondered how Tigerheart looked.
"Thank you. For everything." She thanked Oakfur and he smiled before giving her a comforting lick on the cheek.
"Its fine. Now remember, your a winner. Act like one. All I ask of you is to not let Anyone forget you." Dovewing nodded and Oakfur's serious tone vanished.
"Now come along. Your interview is in the next three minutes!" And with that, Oakfur herded Dovewing out the room and into the all familiar room behind the stage. Dovewing nearly broke into tears when she saw him. Tigerheart. He stood there, his fur groomed smooth except for the spine which was spiked up and a heart with black stripes was painted on his chest.
Tigerheart..... fitting
Dovewing ran forward and buried her face in his fur, being careful not to disturb the style. "I-I can't believe we managed to win.... Out of twenty two other cats....." Dovewing shook her head.
"Don't talk about that." She breathed and Tigerheart nodded.
"Welcome, everyone! This indeed was an exciting First Warrior Games! Now let us welcome our two victors, Dovewing from Thunderclan and Tigerheart from Shadowclan!" A different cat appeared to be giving the interviews. He had tan colored fur with many tan or brown like designs white paws and tail tip and creamy brown eyes. His fur, however, was decorated with a bright, unreal green color.
Dovewing and Tigerheart edged onto the stage and sat on the one big cushion that had been provided to them.
"So, Tigerheart. How did you feel when they announced a second winner was going to be provided from every Game?" The cat asked and Tigerheart swallowed what could only be his anxiety.
"Honestly, I was shocked when it was announced. Of course me and Dovewing had been planning on splitting ways when the others were......gone." Dovewing put her head on his shoulder as if to comfort him.
"What about you, Dovewing?" The cat asked
"I-I was happy. It meant I would get to return home with someone else whose been through what I went through." Dovewing heard the crowd sigh heavily and she realized they had gained a liking to her.
"Well its customary to show the victor, or in this case, the victors biggest moments." The cat gestured to a black slab on the wall and it showed when Dovewing and Tigerheart were picked at the Reaping. Then it switched to Dovewing's elegant design and the Tigerheart's design during their first interviews, which was tame compared to what he looked like now.
Then it showed Dovewing fleeing the Cornucopia and Tigerheart's gaze followed her , only for Jasminestar to lunge at him. Dawnpelt then ran past with Graymist in her sights. Dovewing watched as Tigerheart lashed out in panic, sending Jasminestar convulsing to the ground, in the background, Dawnpelt tore a sharp stick through Graymist's belly.
Dovewing noticed Tigerheart was faintly shaking and she pressed against him to show she was there for him and didn't hate him for what he did to protect himself.
Then it switched to Dovewing's meeting with the apprentices and how she rescued them. She felt her stomach twist. How did Shadowclan feel about her abandonment of Boulderpaw when the Tribe cats attacked and Rushpaw when the dogs attacked? She didn't like to think of it. The next scene was Tigerheart rushing to Pebble's side as Crowfeather fled the Cornucopia. Her eyes flickered shut right as he reached her with the herbs.
The next scenes were fresh in Dovewing's memory and it took all of her to keep from breaking down, crying.
It was when Boulderpaw was attacked by the Tribe cats and Rushpaw had rushed to the river and Dovewing went up the tree.
They showed her and Tigerheart's meet up and then the attack from the dogs. Dovewing couldn't peel her eyes from Rushpaw's murder until the screen switched to her and Tigerheart's discovery of the flood and they climbed up a tree. Then it switched to Lionblaze.
Lionblaze was struggling to stay above water and he was screaming words that broke Dovewing's heart.
"I Love you, Cinderheart!" Was the last words to leave his mouth before the water submerged him and he never came back up.
Why did they play that!? That was neither of us!
Dovewing's questioning of if it was an act to shake her up before it switched to her and Tigerheart in the tree and it began its plumet downward. Although there were no views of inside the tree, there was one of Crowfeather. He was dangling from a nearby tree branch. Dovewing's face displayed her outright horror as the tree she and Tigerheart were hiding in crashed into Crowfeather. His wails and bitter coughing before he submitted to the darkness of death would stay with Dovewing until she died.
The stage was silent and the crowd refused to make any sound. Finally the cat spoke.
"Well. Let's get to a lighter topic." He announced and the crowd let out faint cheers
"So, Dovewing, How long have you and Tigerheart had eyes for each other?" Dovewing felt like her throat was swollen and she couldn't find herself to speak.
"Well....We've been talking at the Gatherings since we were first named warriors. I guess we kinda... realized how much we loved each other when the Games brought us together.."
Dovewing mentally thanked Tigerheart for the rescue.
"And, My sources tell me that Bumblestripe had eyes for you. Is that true?" Dovewing was thankful for an easy to answer question.
"Yes. He told me this before. I just didn't return his feelings. I bet his sister is going to be mad at me for not letting him live..." Dovewing felt her throat tighten with tears and she was silent.
"Well. My condolences, for your losses." The cat stood up and the two victors did too.
"Our 1st Warrior Games victors, everyone!" He nodded to the victors and they nodded too before walking off the stage.
Tigerheart turned to Dovewing and smiled at her.
"Thanks for the save." She whispered
"Your welcome. Anything for my beautiful Dove." He purred and pressed his nose against her cheek. Dovewng ducked away from him.
"Don't." She growled playfully and Tigerheart grinned and crouched down.
"Or what? Your gonna tickle me with your pretty feathers?" Dovewing let out a playful, yet quiet, yowl and jumped at him.
After a few minutes of playing, Oakfur and Willow walked in.
"Don't tell me you've started your own Warrior Games!" Willow mewed in mock worry.
Dovewing crawled off Tigerheart and smiled.
"Anyway. The train back to your Lake is here." Dovewing nodded and she and Tigerheart followed them onto the awaiting train.
Dovewing suddenly felt worry bubble up inside her.
Would her Clan accept her back when she had left two apprentices and her own clanmates to die? What about the thing with her and Tigerheart? Would her Clan even acknowledge her?
Dovewing found herself crying on the pelt she was given to sleep on. It was horrible. She had disobeyed Firestar's demand to bring back her or Lionblaze. Instead she brought back her love from a different clan!
"Hey." Tigerheart whispered as he walked into Dovewing's room. She turned, not having fallen asleep.
"You can't sleep either?" She asked and Tigerheart nodded and laid down beside her.
"My father is leader now. If Thunderclan won't welcome you back, you can come with me." Dovewing smiled weakly.
"We get to live in a fancy den somewhere." He whispered
"For letting our clanmates die off." Dovewing reminded.
Tigerheart let out an exasperated sigh and pulled Dovewing close. His warmth and the soothing beat of his heart lulled Dovewing to sleep. Her worries vanished and the horrible world seemed forever away from her as she slept.
