~Chapter Nine~
Whisperkit furiously licked down her chest and neck fur. She had to look perfect for her ceremony. Oakpaw and Shortpaw were more happy than ever and everything was amazing. Mosspaw was out of her fur, Blackbranch was back to loving her, and now she was becoming an apprentice! Flarestar voice rang out across the clearing, "Let all cats gather beneath the Burning Rock!" Whisperkit rushed forward to the base of the rock with an overeager squeal. Flarestar locked her gaze, "Whisperkit, it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Whisperpaw. Your mentor will be Copperbreeze. I know Copperbreeze will pass down all he knows on to you." Flarestar took a sharp breeze and continued, "Copperbreeze, you are ready to take on another apprentice. You have shown yourself to be intelligent and very disciplined.. You will be the mentor of Whisperpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to Whisperpaw." Copperbreeze approached Whisperpaw and touched her nose, "I will give you the hardest training you can imagine but it will pay off." Whispepaw nodded furiously, her eyes narrowed in determination.
"Whisperpaw!, Whisperpaw!, Whisperpaw!"
Whisperpaw purred hearing Oakpaw and Shortpaw's shrill yowls. Once the yowls silence Copperbreeze cocked his head to the exit and began padding towards it. Whisperpaw raced after him, what would they do? Hunting? Fighting? Moss collecting? Ew. She hoped it wasn't. But if it was she refused to let Copperbreeze see her complain. She didn't want her mentor to think of her as a brat. She wanted to be perfect for him. The best possible apprentice. She had to be. "I will show you the territory." Copperbreeze explained his muscles rippled beneath his fur as he moved. He looked like a true warrior. Well...he was a true warrior.
"So no other training?" Whisperpaw pressed, keeping her tone even. Copperbreeze halted and whipped his head to meet her gaze. "I'm the mentor here." He turned and continued. Whisperpaw ducked her head and followed him. He was intense, or as Oakpaw would say ' a horribly haughty old cat with a fading sense of humour.' Whisperpaw gulped down a purr as she recognized the one boulder that Oakpaw, Shortpaw, and her had played on. "Are we going to the Riverclan border first..." Whisperpaw asked. "Yes." Copperbreeze replied, his nose twitching. Sure enough Whisperpaw could smell the faintest bit of water. The lake? Most likely.
An uncomfortable silence kept its grasp on the two and Whisperpaw was grateful when the lake and Riverclan's border emerged. "This is Riverclans border with us. We have been at peace with Riverclan for some time. Riverclan cats have water magic which means they can manipulate water. Their speciality is a Salmon, a cat who can turn into water. When fighting a Riverclan cat, do fast and short attacks. Heavy attacks are harder to do since they are slippery and quick. Be sure to ,when you have the chance, knock them out when necessary." Copperbreeze explained, then turned and headed the opposite direction. "We will see the suffering tree another day." Whisperpaw tried to mentally stack these facts and nodded. The tree grew taller, the undergrowth dispersed, and nettles began to cover the ground the farther they walked.
Eventually, Copperbreeze stopped again and waved his tail at the border, "This is Shadowclan's border. They can levitate and decay things. Owls can see in the dark as if day time, and turn invisible. When fighting a Shadowclan cat you should take advantage of their size. They are the biggest of the clan cats and remember their eyes turn purple when they are levitating something. Similar to us." Whisperpaw once again nodded and peered curiously at the Shadowclan border as the air seemed to shimmer. A bracken coloured she-cat with white patches appeared in front of them. Whisperpaw jolted back with a small shriek. Copperbreeze however seemed unfazed, "Do you take pleasure in scaring new apprentices, Lilywhisker?" The she-cat rolled her eyes, "I do, mouse-breath." Then she turned and disappeared into the trees of Shadowclan.
"Well, that wasn't nice." Whisperpaw said, voice wavering. "No, it wasn't- Let's head back." Copperbreeze flicked his tail towards camp, and headed off. "Already?!" Whisperpaw protested. "Listen Whisperpaw, I am your mentor. Flarestar chose me for a reason. You are almost six moons so I am giving you a smaller work-out. And this was also a lesson to see if you would listen without complaint." Copperbreeze tilted his head as if to say you-know-you-failed-that. Whisperpaw dipped her head, "sorry.." Copperbreeze nodded the padded forward gaining speed.
Whisperpaw dipped her head feeling defeat start to settle in her belly. She had already disappointed her mentor.

Whisperpaw entered camp, to everyone pacing nervously. "What's wrong?" Copperbreeze asked eyes narrowed. "Snowfluff started her kitting!" Woodpaw explained. Whisperpaw's eyes widened, Snowfluff? Her older sibling? Wasn't she due another moon from now? "Actually..." Ivytangle exited the den with a proud look on his face. Greyrock gazed up at the tom, "She's okay right?" "She's fine, she had three kits. A small dark grey tom, a black and white she-cat, and a grey tom!" Ivytangle exclaimed. Greyrock purred and entered the den. Whisperpaw pushed threw the crowd and eventually made it into the nursery where Blackbranch and Greyrock sat beside Snowfluff. "The grey will be Frogkit?" Greyrock said gazing at the kits with love. "And the black and white one...Swirlkit." Snowfluff said her voice a gentle purr. "How about Smokekit for the dark grey tom?" Whisperpaw proposed. "That's perfect!" Blackbranch said with a purr. Snowfluff and Greyrock nodded in agreement. "Hello little nephews, and niece." Whisperpaw whispered. She watched the tiny kits fumble around Snowfluff's belly. "Well, we should let you rest." Greyrock said and they all exited the den. Blackbranch stopped beside her outside the den, "You feel that glorious feeling Whisperpaw? That is the feeling of hope for generations to come. You might bring kits into this world too, and help this clan thrive." Whisperpaw nodded and met her mother's gaze. She might have kits but right now she was going to focus on being the best warrior she would be.
She would be better than any other warrior. And she would be better than Mosspaw especially.
