~Chapter Four~

"Your  name will now be Grasspaw, your mentor will be Cinderswirl." Flarestar announced. "Grasspaw, Grasspaw, Grasspaw!" Mosspaw cheered along with her clanmates. She looked around for Whisperkit as the cheers faded and Grasspaw went off with Cinderswirl.

"Where's Whisperkit?" Mosspaw called. Blackbranch, Lightstorm, Emberwish, and Woodpaw all padded over to her with anxious eyes.. Emberwish kneaded the ground with her forepaws. "I haven't seen Oakpaw." "Neither I, Shortpaw." Lightstorm flattened his ears to his head.

"I thought I saw Oakpaw and Shortpaw leave camp." Woodpaw said. "You don't think Whisperkit left with them?" Mosspaw exclaimed. Blackbranch licked one of her forepaws, "She is a sturdy kit, I'm sure she'll be okay." Lightstorm gave a long hiss, "She was awfully upset of not being made an apprentice as well."

"She should wait her turn." Blackbranch said tartly. Emberwish watched the entrance, silently. "I think it was a little unfair of Flarestar." Woodpaw mumbled. Blackbranch rolled her eyes, "Whisperkit should learn how to be patient, It's a great trait of a warrior, she is my little warrior."

"Seems like you haven't even acknowledged, Whisperkit, she slept in the apprentice den last night." Lightstorm replied. Mosspaw blinked, surprised at her fathers knowledge. Blackbranch sighed, "Whisperkit needs her own space, she has a great destiny, let her follow it.."

Lightstorm shook his head but didn't say another word. Suddenly Oakpaw ran in with Whisperkit in her jaws and Shortpaw on her tail. All of them were drenched. "Whisperkit fell in the lake!" she called. "Yeah, I tried to reach her but also fell in. Oakpaw swam threw the water to save us." Shortpaw explained.

"Come to my den quickly." Ivytangle said, waving them over with her tail wildly. Oakpaw staggered forward, and followed Ivytangle. Mosspaw dashed after them. "Mosspaw get-" began Ivytangle fluffing the nests. "Poppy seeds, and thyme?" Mosspaw grabbed three poppy seeds and a couple of thyme leaves. Ivytangle gave a short purr and Oakpaw, and Shortpaw collapsed into their nests. Blackbranch barreled through the entrance of the den with Lightstorm at her tail. "Is she okay?" Lightstorm asked. "She has to be." Blackbranch said. Lightstorm turned to her about to give a stinging retort when Ivytangle ushered them out, "Too many cats, leave, leave." Ivytangle turned to Mosspaw, "Sit beside Whisperkit to keep her warm and lick her fur the wrong way." Mosspaw nodded and wrapped her tail around Whisperkit and started grooming her neck.

"Mosspaw?" Whisperkit muttered her eyes dull. "Shh... you need to rest." Mosspaw said, eyes wide. Whisperkit's head lolled to the side her eyes fluttering. Shortpaw watched as Ivytangle waved his paws over the earth. Mosspaw recognized catmint, feverfew, and lavender. Ivytangle chewed it thoroughly, and began to patch it onto Shortpaw's neck and ears. "Eat this as well." Ivytangle speared a juniper berry on her claw and gave it to Shortpaw. "Are they going to be okay? I feel so responsible." Oakpaw blinked sadly at Ivytangle.

"They will be fine. It is good you got them out when you did, Whisperkit seemed to get the worst chill." Ivytangle said, flicking his tail as he chewed up more of the poultice and speared another berry. "Where do you apply the poultice?" Mosspaw asked. "Usually on the head, neck, and ears."

" Can I apply it on Whisperkit, Ivytangle?" Mosspaw asked, eyes shining with a mixture of worry and curiosity. Ivytangle nodded, with a purr and passed her the poultice. Mosspaw slowly applied the poultice coating her neck and ears in a thin layer. "T-thank you Mosspaw." Whisperkit muttered. Mosspaw quickly gave Oakpaw, Shortpaw, and Whisperkit two poppy seeds and three thyme leaves. As each one gently drifted into sleep Blackbranch returned, with Lightstorm padding after her.

"They are resting, please talk outside. Mosspaw go check on Dustyspot, Prickleriver says hes been complaining recently." Ivytangle said. Mosspaw gave a short nod then exited the den with her parents. Mosspaw started to the elders den to be stopped by Blackbranch. "Did you heal them?" She demanded eyes furious slits.

"I put a poultice on there neck and give them poppy seeds-" began Mosspaw. "That means nothing to me. Is my little warrior safe? Your supposed to be a true medicine cat." Blackbranch hissed claws unsheathing. She wouldn't hurt me, Mosspaw thought gulping. "Mosspaw is trying her best." Lightstorm spoke up resting his tail on Blackbranch. Blackbranch gave him a small purr and walked off with him towards the warriors' den. Mosspaw sighed and headed off to the elders' den. Inside Prickleriver an insanely kind silver tabby was grooming her pelt. Dustyspot was beside her curled up in his nest. His brown-spotted white fur unkempt.

"Dustyspot?" She called walking in. The tom slowly roused letting out a rough yawn. " Young'uns always wakin' me and River." He flicked his tail to the silver tabby. Mosspaw stifled a purr and padded closer to the tom. "Ivytangle sent me here to check on you." Mosspaw said softly. Dustyspot let out a hoarse cough, "River did you tell on little old me? I've still got moons under my pelt. Don't waste your time young'un. You Flares should be runnin' and jumpin' while you still have young bones." Dustyspot let out a coarse purr.

"The sooner you tell me the sooner I leave." Mosspaw said curling her tail around her paws. Dustyspot sighed and shook out his pelt. "My throats mighty sore. And my nose is 'streamin." Mosspaw nodded, "Anything else?" "No, not unless you can cure age, young'un. My old bones ache, from just that age. Now scat." Dustyspot flicked his tail at the exit and settled into his nest. Mosspaw turned and exited the den, "Come back soon!", Prickleriver called after her.

Mosspaw returned to the medicine den trying her best to hurry without looking like she was in a hurry. "Dustyspots complains of a sore throat, and his nose was runny. He said his joints were aching to." Mosspaw explained quickly. "Daisy for his joints....chamomile, honey." Ivytangle mumbled he waved a paw over the earth to reveal his herbs. Then he stabbed the leave with his claws and hurried off. "Wait!" Mosspaw called. Ivytangle either didn't hear her or was in too much of a hurry.

Mosspaw sighed and went to the very back to the den were the moss was held, far away from patients. It was sometimes used as an overflow room if the sickness was very bad, Ivytangle told her. Mosspaw started rolling up the moss into separate little bundles. Recently Mosspaw had started doing this to calm herself down. She sighed and separated some more moss. Maybe I should add this to Snowfluff's nest she'll be needing it, Mosspaw thought rolling a clump of moss in her jaws. She headed back to main room hearing.....purring? Was Crookedblaze here?

Mosspaw peaked around the corner with a gasp, then backed up quickly. "You are a amazing actor Whisperpaw!" Mosspaw recognized Oakpaw. "I am not a 'paw yet. How many times do I have to tell you?" Whisperkit responded. "You should be! Instead we got Little Miss wings." Shortpaw replied. Little Miss Wings? Is that me? Mosspaw thought eyes wide. "Well Little Miss Wings is back in the Moss area. She'll be back any second look half-drowned." Whisperkit ordered. "Yeah, i've been meaning to tell you, THANK YOU SO MUCH OAKPAW FOR SPLASHING ME." Shortpaw hissed. "Shhhh!" Oakpaw and Whisperkit shushed. Mosspaw picked up her moss shook out her fur and pranced out pretending nothing had happened.

But deep inside Mosspaw felt like her heart was breaking.
