Chapter 18
The moon was sitting atop an unseen tower of the sky, representing the pinacle of the clouds. It made Voleeye uneasy. It was nearly full and Voleeye felt a persistent nag in his pelt.
Runningwish and Goldensky were distant to him more then ever before, and that was saying a lot for his golden sister. His only friends were the dragon flies that would occassionally become his company as he wandered the forest. The grass was cool from a short shower of rain earlier that day, and the soft breeze only made it even more pleasent to be out at this time of night.
Voleeye had tried many times to talk to Goldensky, but he was only turned away by her confusing moods. She would be greeting everyone with happiness, but when he approached she would turn him away with almost a hiss. It had plagued him, made him wonder what he could have possibly done to her to make her hate him out of them all.
If anything he should be the one treating her like that, she was the one who left their clan and their family after all. He sighed as he looked around him, seeing the Bloodclan cat's camp not too far from his current position. He let his mind wander again as he pressed onward through the forest toward the lake.
He had other things to think about anyway, Spottedlegs was his mate and was expecting their kits. He couldn't be anymore excited for the day of their birth. She had admitted her state of affairs a while back, long enough ago that the due date was nearly upon them both.
All the other kits were apprentices and getting closer to becoming warriors, though Voleeye knew it wasn't as close as his children to entering the world. He hadn't even considered names seriously yet, just a few Spottedlegs would offer to him. He paused as his paw touched the cool water of the shore, surprised the wet sand hadn't awakened him from his thoughts first.
He paused his reeling mind and looked out upon the water. It was beautiful, large and majestic with the reflection of all the clan's ancestors shimmering on the surface. His ear twitched as he heard movement behind him.
It must have been some kind of prey. When he only heard it fall silent instead of running away Voleeye grew suspicious. What animal would stay somewhere they could be in danger?
It must have been another cat then, someone watching him. Voleeye turned around, scanning the forest's edge with his gift. He spotted a golden cat amongst the leaves and realized it was Goldensky.
"Goldensky?" Voleeye called out. Goldensky rose and gazed at him.
"Voleeye..." She said quietly, her large fluffy tail twitching every so often. Something felt strange about her presence. She must have been through some changes while she was with Tigertooth.
That thought only reminded him more of how much he despised his sister's mate. He was born in their clan, lived in their clan, was trained in their clan, but yet he still found it in him to betray them all. Voleeye knew he would never be able to accept that, accept him as a clan mate ever again.
He glanced away from Goldensky for a moment. The golden cat charged at him and he flinched away on reflex from her. Suddenly Runningwish emerged, tackling Goldensky. The two glared at each other as Voleeye watched confused and startled.
His sisters stared intently at each other before Runningwish stood up.
"Goldensky, are you alright? Runningwish, what are you doing here?" Voleeye asked, too confused by what just happened. Runningwish smiled.
"We were playing tag. It seems Goldensky wanted to involve you in the game." Runningwish said a little too fast. Voleeye shrugged it off for now.
"Tag? Why would you be playing that at this time in the dark?" Voleeye asked. Runningwish and Goldensky glanced at each other.
"Well we wanted to uh.. relive our younger days, bond together since she has been gone for so long." Runningwish explained. Goldensky nodded quickly, almost looking embarrassed. Voleeye gave them both curious looks before sighing.
"Alright..." He said and turned toward camp to leave.
"I'll be returning to camp. Don't stay out here too late, you two have duties." Voleeye warned. The sisters nodded and bid him farewell. As he walked he could hear them both start talking, but it was drowned out by the forest's music.
