The Gathering

"Let all cats old enough to run the moor gather around the Tall Rock for a clan meeting!" Owlstar's call rang through the clearing. Finchkit felt a tremor of excitement run through him, This is it! He thought, shaking out his pelt, Tonight is my chance!

"All cats going to the gathering tonight gather by the camp entrance!" A group of cats started going to the camp entrance, a few apprentices were looking at them jealously, wishing they had been chosen to go to the gathering.

Finchkit waited until Owlstar led the Clan through the tunnel, the apprentices who got to come along were chattering excitedly to each other.

The ginger kit looked at the deputy, Thornfoot, proudly. I'm so lucky to have my father be deputy! Finchkit thought, watching his father's brown tail disappear through the tunnel.

He turned to Dawntuft, "I think I'm going to sleep early" Finchkit meowed, trying to sound as sleepy as possible. He let out a huge fake yawn.

"Okay, I'll come too in a bit" Dawntuft blinked fondly down at the ginger kit, Finchkit felt a little guilty about lying to his mother but gave a little purr in response.

As soon as Dawntuft's back was turned he scuttled to the dirt place, he had recently found a small hole just big enough for a kit to crawl through in the gorse barrier. Finchkit crawled through it and gasped, The moor is so huge! You can see for miles! The kit thought in amazement.

He looked around and spotted a group of cats heading towards the forest, Finchkit ducked behind a gorse bush as one of the senior warriors looked back. He waited until the clan was over a hill before sprinting towards a large boulder.

He raced across the moor at top speed, feeling as light as a feather. I feel like I could run forever and never get tired! Finchkit almost yowled in exhilaration but stopped himself just in time, he hadn't come all this way just to be caught before he was even in the forest!

Finchkit reached the boulder and hid behind it until he saw his clan mates disappear into the forest. It would be easier to keep hiding in the forest as there were more trees and bushes.

The forest was dark this late at night and Finchkit thanked StarClan that at least the moon still shone brightly. He followed his clan until they reached a big clearing, he settled underneath a bramble bush and watched in amazement at the number of cats in the clearing.

Wow! The four oaks are so huge! And the Great Rock, how do the leaders even climb that thing! Finchkit gaped as Owlstar leaped onto the rock with a massive jump, there were already two other cats on the rock.

The fourth group of cats streamed into the clearing, reeking of fish and mud. That must be RiverClan, the kit thought, remembering a conversation he had had with Goldenpaw about the four clans.

RiverClan smelled of fish and had long and glossy pelts, ThunderClan was broad and muscular, ShadowClan was dark pelted and sleek.

He remembered Goldenpaw telling him. Finchkit started as a loud yowl echoed through the clearing. "Let the Gathering Begin!" A white she-cat has been the one to start the meeting, she strode confidently forward "RiverClan has two new apprentices, Pebblepaw and Troutpaw! They are mentored by Streamshade and Rippleheart!"

"Pebblepaw! Troutpaw! Pebblepaw! Troutpaw!"

The clans cheered for the two apprentices who were looking embarrassed at getting so much attention. "Prey is swimming well in RiverClan, that is all I have to report." The RiverClan leader finished.

Owlstar stepped forward next, "Prey is running fast in WindClan, but not too fast for our warriors! The queens and elder sleep with a full belly every night. A fox has been scented near ThunderClan border so you might want to be aware, Acornstar."

Owlstar meowed to a russet-colored she-cat with amber eyes next to him. Acornstar dipped her head and stepped forward to make her report.

"ThunderClan is doing well, three of our apprentices have been made warriors. Their names are now Silverwhisker, Snowpounce, and Spottedfeather!" The clan cheered their names as they had done for Pebblepaw and Troutpaw.

"A patrol of our warriors chased of a badger, thankfully there were only minor injuries and the badger has left the territory." Acornstar finished, stepping back to let the last leader make his report.

Finchkit leaned forward, determined not to miss a word. A twig snapped under his paw as he stepped closer, an elder who had been sitting nearby whipped his head around and stared at the mortified Finchkit.

"Hey! A kit at the gathering, now I haven't seen that before!" More cats turned their head to look at Finchkit who shrunk down, shaking in fear. "Finchkit?" A familiar voice called, Thornfoot pushed his way through the crowd until he stood in front of his kit.

"What are you doing here? You're supposed to be with Dawntuft!" Thornfoot hissed. "I know but I wanted to see the gathering." Finchkit whimpered, lowering his head in shame. His father sighed and shook his head but gave his son a comforting lick on the top of his head.

"Owlstar?" The white RiverClan leader asked, "Why did you bring a kit to the gathering?"

"I don't know Larkstar, he must have followed us here, I'm surprised he made it. He's only a kit after all!" Despite his humility, Finchkit felt a tiny spark of pride, he was probably the first kit to ever be at a gathering!

"You might as well let the kit stay." A black and silver tom who Finchkit recognized as the ShadowClan leader commented. "The gathering is almost done anyway."

Owlstar nodded and turned to the ginger kit, "Smokestar is right, if you stay quiet you can stay, just go sit next to your father."

Finchkit nodded fervently, his jaws tightly clasped together. He followed Thornfoot to the base of the Great Rock and took a seat next to him, he stared at the cats in front of him. Haha, a kit sitting where the deputies sit! I don't think the clans will forget this soon!

Finchkit imagined the faces of Eaglekit and Sandkit when he would tell them that he had been to the gathering! He then focused his attention on Smokestar, who was reporting for ShadowClan.

"Blackflower is expecting Marshflame's kits!" A few cats murmured their congratulations to the young pair, who looked ready to burst with pride. "Lizardfoot has decided to retire and Applepaw has been apprenticed to Blazewhisker!"

The clans cheered their names and then broke up into separate groups, getting ready to leave Fourtrees. Thornfoot picked Finchkit up by the scruff and walked over to Owlstar who was gathering all the WindClan cats.

The cats swiftly made their way over the moor and back to the shallow dip in the ground that was their camp. As Finchkit gently rocked in his father's jaws he felt his eyelids begin to droop, before he knew it he was fast asleep.

Finchkit was awoken by a rough tongue rasping across his ears, he cracked open his eyes to see Dawntuft standing over him. "Why did you run off like that! You had me so worried!" His mother pulled him close and wrapped herself around him tightly.

"Mom!" Finchkit complained, "You're suffocating me!" Dawntuft picked her kit up and walked into the nursery, laying Finchkit into their nest gently. She curled up around him and they both fell asleep.
