Prologue
A hush wind dusted over the frosty white grass of the hollow. The sky was painted with a strip of illuminating clustered stars, surrounded by many many more, giving the bright thin moon a beautiful shimmer. A she-cat sat still in the shrub, her tongue rasping over her paw gently, cleansing the star-speckled tan fur. Her bright green eyes shone with wisdom and power.
"Lightedstar," a young, feminine voice called out, and a slim gray she-cat with darker dapples slipped through the clearing towards the other. The tan she-cat pulled herself out of the shrub's cover and approached the gray she. A mew escaped from her mouth.
She spoke, "Yes, Dewshine? What is it?" As she replied, her whiskers trembled. Dewshine seemed distressed about something; her blue eyes flared with distinct worry. The shorter she-cat lifted her head, her paws kneading the undergrowth.
"The prophecy," she paused to gulp a small amount of air, her tail lashing, "it has begun." Lightedstar folded her ears back onto her nape in astonishment. The prophecy was sworn to begin in a few more moons, not this early in LeafFall. It was impossible for it to start now when it was meant for NewLeaf!
"Impossible. Show me," she commanded, and Dewshine hesitantly began to trot away into another shrub that was clustered with thorns and twigs. Lightedstar followed close behind, weaving through the gaps that she could squeeze through. The thorns and twigs stabbed at her muzzle, but she ignored the pain and continued on. Confusion washed over her about the prophecy. Who would be the first?
As the two star-speckled cats broke from the bushes and into the empty clearing of the MoonPool, they halted. The gleaming pool shimmered and lapped at the grass surrounding it, making the illusion of the stars waving and rippling on the surface, and a moon shivering in the reflection.
As Lightedstar climbed up onto the rock that loomed over the pond, she released a signaling yowl, which caused more StarClan warriors to begin to slide through the underbrush in a calm manner, while some young cats clumsily darted through the thin barrier, all of them meowing curiously.
Lightedstar silenced them by calling out in her echoing voice, "Cats of StarClan, I have summoned you to announce that the prophecy that was foreseen to begin in the next few moons has begun." Although a trace of surprise crossed all the cats, they sat wordlessly, respecting the Moonpool and staying silent. The leader's head dipped down, the starlit water shining blue and white ripples across her visage. A cold darkness fell around the enlarged group.
The water presented a ghostly image of a small orange she-cat tabby tackling over her slick-coated friend, giggles and purrs erupting from her.
"It's her?" a tom whispered. Lightedstar blinked in answer, raising her body up to straighten her back as she sat boldly.
"Yes, it's her. We just don't know what she's capable of yet- she is merely a kit, not yet experienced." She stood and backed away from the pond, turning and pacing away, her star-speckled pelt rippling. The darkness vanished to be replaced with the comforting light. Her tail flicked impatiently.
Dewshine matched the leader's pace. "Lightedstar, would you like me to send a sign?" she muttered in her ear.
"Yes." Lightedstar paused, pondering what would be a presentable sign for the prophecy. She answered Dewshine in a hush voice.
"Will they understand it?"
She headed to the camp once again, not glancing back at the idle silver she-cat. "They will soon enough."
