Echoflight padded into the camp by herself, a squirrel dangling from her jaws. Immediately, the air thickened as every cat directed their eyes on her. Trying to be discreet, she dropped the prey on the fresh-kill pile, trying to avoid the whispers.

It had only been half a moon since the Final Battle and no cat trusted her. Not even Luckystar and Goldenperch, her kin. They shot her wary glances, as if unsure if she would turn into Demonclaw.

I killed Demonclaw for the good of the Clan.

As sunset arrived, Echoflight decided to head to her den without any fresh-kill. I'll make them trust me. From this day onwards, every bit of fresh-kill Icatch, every bit of moss I have to fetch, everything I can do will go to theClan. I want them to see I am loyal. I'll do anything.

Echoflight woke up to a sharp hiss. Sleepily, she stretched and left the den, wondering what had woken her up. To her surprise, it was Dawnmist and Spark, who claimed to have joined them. Echoflight didn't trust her at all.

My brother doesn't know how to choose a worthy mate. Spark is vile. Apparently Frogfern saw her torturing a mouse.

Echoflight inched closer, desperate to hear what they were saying. Hiding in some long grass, she strained her ears and managed to catch their words.

"I don't know what to do, Spark. You'll be leaving soon, and I'll end up with no one to talk to. I'll drive myself insane. I'm suffering from so much, and yes, I know you are too, don't get fired up at me..." Dawnmist's voice trailed off.

Spark replied in a soft tone. StarClan, I didn't think that cat could be nice! Then again, people think that about me too. "Don't worry, Dawnmist. You'll figure it out. You'll find someone to replace me."

Dawnmist's blurry form seemed to shiver. "I hope so, Spark. I hope so."

The two cats changed their topic and Echoflight left them to talk.

A final thought was in her head when she fell asleep. I wonder if I can help Dawnmist...
