Chapter 5

The moon shone brightly down into the cave, causing the river to glow and light up in a million different colours. Dawnmist padded to the river, taking a quick sip of its waters. A brief tussle with Echoflight had left both of them worn out and it was almost time to head back to the Clan.

Dawnmist yawned and settled down in peace. Echoflight lay next to her and they shared tongues for a while, neither cat talking but both cats enjoying the company.

"Say, you should make this into a role," Dawnmist mewed suddenly.

"I've been thinking about it," Echoflight admitted. "It would be cool if I had other cats to help. Like, I could help all the cats in the Clan! That would be awesome!"

"I agree," Dawnmist couldn't help but purr.

Dawnmist could imagine it clearly. Echoflight, some type of helper for the Clan. "You'd need a name," she pointed out.

"Hmm," Echoflight mused. "The Mind Soother? The Mind Fixer? Problem Solver?"

"Definitely not," Dawnmist mewed sharply. "That sounds like some type of StarClan!"

Echoflight purred and they both thought about it for a while.

The Mind Peacemaker? Peace of Mind? Dawnmist dismissed them almost as quickly as she'd thought of them. No, that won't do. White birds symbolize peace, hmm, the White Bird? The Free Bird? The White Dove! That's it!

"I have one!" Dawnmist mewed excitedly.

"What is it?" Echoflight bounced up and down.

"The White Dove. Doves symbolize peace and well, they're white. It sounds cool and official," Dawnmist shared her idea enthusiastically.

"Yes!" Echoflight tried it out. "Welcome, Echoflight, the White Dove!"

Dawnmist closed her eyes lazily, glad that that was fixed.

"We've gotta talk to Luckystar," Echoflight mewed, her voice as bold as Dawnmist had ever heard it.

"Will she be mad?" Dawnmist worried.

"I doubt it," Echoflight's voice was laced with sarcasm. "After all, we've been sneaking out every night for more than a moon. How mad can she get?"

"I guess so," Dawnmist shrugged, Echoflight's behaviour catching.

Recklessness flowed through her blood and she and Echoflight began to make a plan.

Dawnmist opened her eyes to see bright sunlight dancing around the warriors' den. She stretched and padded out of the den. It was a little past sunhigh; the morning patrols were just returning.

"Sunrise! Frogfern!" Dawnmist waved her siblings over from the fresh-kill pile. "Bring me a squirrel, please," she added.

Her littermates made their way, Frogfern dropping a small squirrel in front of her.

"Let's chat," Dawnmist suggested slyly.

"Sure," Sunrise agreed immediately.

They sat down and began talking about patrols and hunts. Frogfern was bragging about catching a blackbird when Dawnmist found a subtle way to begin her plan.

"Oh! Birds! Have you guys heard about the White Dove?" Dawnmist dropped her voice to a whisper.

"What's the White Dove?" Sunrise questioned.

"I'm not too sure," Dawnmist lied. "Apparently its this cat that can make anything better! Like, if you were feeling like you had a bad day, the White Dove could heal you!"

"Like a medicine cat?" Frogfern mewed.

"Exactly, but better! I heard it from Gorsepelt of WindClan at last moon's gathering. He heard it from a RiverClan cat, who heard it from a ShadowClan cat." Dawnmist explained softly.

"Wow! I sure would like to see this White Dove!" Sunrise purred.

"Dawnmist! Let's go hunt!" Echoflight called her from the center of the camp.

"I have to go, bye," Dawnmist nuzzled both littermates before racing away, her heart beating fast.

Her plan was in motion.

Echoflight and Dawnmist joined Lionblaze, Lightningstrike and Duskpelt for a hunting patrol. Echoflight started the conversation this time, raising her voice so the other three could hear but just talking to Dawnmist.

"I want to talk to the White Dove," Echoflight mewed dreamily.

Dawnmist nodded in approval, though, to any other cat, it would just seem like she was agreeing. Echoflight's acting skills sure were sharp. "Me too," she sighed. "Too bad no cat knows what Clan the White Dove is from."

"Does it matter though? It's a bit like medicine cats. They don't have Clan rivalries." Echoflight argued.

"Good point," Dawnmist agreed.

They broke off from their conversation after Echoflight scented a mouse. She hared off to chase it, Duskpelt following.

"What's the White Dove?" Lightningstrike hissed to Dawnmist.

Proudly, Dawnmist mewed back, "A super cool cat who has powers to heal anything!"

"Heal anything?" Lionblaze joined the conversation.

"Yeah! Also, aren't we supposed to be hunting?" Dawnmist quickly changed the topic before it got too serious.

Before the sun even set, the whole camp was talking about the White Dove. Luckystar and Goldenperch had noticed, and both were curious as well. Dawnmist shared a look with Echoflight and they padded up to Luckystar bravely.

"Luckystar, can we speak to you?" Echoflight asked. "Privately."

"Sure, come into my den," Luckystar answered warmly.

Once they were inside, Dawnmist launched into her speech. "I'm sure you've heard about the White Dove by now."

"Yes, I have, actually. Do you know what it is?" Luckystar queried.

"I do," Dawnmist replied, her head tilted upwards.

"What is it?" Luckystar leaned forward, her dark blue eyes shimmering with excitement.

"It's me." Echoflight spoke up.

"You?" she seemed surprised but took it in. "So, the White Dove is a cat."

"Basically, Echoflight's been helping me a lot with my stress and grief lately. For the last moon or so, we've been sneaking out at night to a cave and she's been helping me. Don't get angry yet, just hear us out." Dawnmist mewed hurriedly, seeing Luckystar's expression.

Echoflight continued, "Have you noticed that Dawnmist doesn't flinch back every time some cat speaks to her? Have you noticed she's calmer now? She brings back more prey, even though we both haven't had the best sleep. Dawnmist actually has a chance to have friends and have a normal life!"

Dawnmist had never appreciated her best friend more.

"And that's why we are here, to propose this idea. We want the White Dove to be an actual role. Any cat within the Clan that needs help, like I did, can go to Echoflight. And she can help them! It'll make the Clan healthier, and everyone will be happier." Dawnmist finished.

"Please," Echoflight added.

Luckystar looked as if she was deep in thought. "Look, it's a good idea, but you've been sneaking out. I put both of you back on apprentice duties. But, regardless, I love the idea. I have noticed Dawnmist's change, and I agree with you. I'll go call a Clan meeting."

Dawnmist was almost about to bounce up and down in glee but managed to control herself. After all, she was in a meeting with her Clan leader!

"Let all cats gather here!" Luckystar yowled from the Highledge.

All the cats came out to listen. Echoflight and Dawnmist stood next to Luckystar.

Luckystar repeated almost everything the two of them had told her and ended with, "What do you guys think?"

"Well, I've been hearing about this White Dove all day, and I'm in," Lionblaze called.

Dawnmist dipped her head to the golden tabby tom. Someone believed in them!

Most of the cats all voted yes, save for Frogfern, who shot Echoflight an annoyed look, and Luckystar made it official. Echoflight was now the White Dove!

Somehow, Dawnmist had a suspicion that cats from other Clans would be finding out too, especially at the next gathering, which was only a few days away.
