Chapter 17
During Broken Amber, a couple moons after the last chapter.
Acornstar twitched in her sleep, dreaming about her brother. It was selfish, she knew it, he was probably resting in StarClan, but she couldn't help but worry. Ever since he had died before the battle against DarkClan, she had had nightmares and trauma.
Foxclaw had been murdered by Demonclaw. Acornstar had watched the tom sneak out for a few nights, unable to pull herself together enough to stop him, and play with Dawnmist, a ThunderClan she-cat. She had been worried, and one night, she had watched Demonclaw murder him brutally.
And it was because of Dawnmist.
It was silly but Acornstar still harboured a grudge against the ginger she-cat. That was why, many moons ago, she had argued against Echoflight, the White Dove, to become official. Because Echoflight had helped Dawnmist.
Dawnmist's face haunted her dreams. She was always nuzzling Demonclaw and they both would lunge at Foxclaw, killing him. They sometimes let him suffer, making him bleed out into the earth. Sometimes they were merciful and killed him quickly. Acornstar didn't think they were merciful, though.
Just seeing Dawnmist made her angry. Which was why Acornstar had decided to visit the White Dove, who supposedly, according to several cats, could heal anything. Hopefully she could heal her grief.
The next day, Acornstar left her territory, feeling guilty as she crossed into ThunderClan's territory. Acornstar was a fair cat. She liked to give others a chance, but she didn't like to break rules. Foxclaw had always been the naughty one. When they were kits, he snuck out to try and see the gathering. Same as when he was an apprentice. And he had always been so dramatic. A small cut could send him howling in pain.
Acornstar shivered at the memories. There was no point dragging them up like dead prey.
Acornstar headed vaguely in the direction of ThunderClan's camp, although she supposed that wasn't where Echoflight helped cats. She picked up the scent of a patrol and waited for them calmly. Duskpelt, Goldenperch and Leafsong emerged from the bushes, gazing at her suspiciously.
Goldenperch approached her calmly. "Hello, Acornstar. What're you doing here?"
"I need to speak to the White Dove," Acornstar drew herself up, puffing out her chest.
"Alright. Echoflight mentioned that we might be expecting you. She said your appearance at the last gathering was abysmal. Her words, not mine." Goldenperch shrugged. "I'll take you to our camp. She's on a patrol right now, but she'll be back."
Acornstar followed the patrol to the ThunderClan camp. It was busy and beautiful.
"Cool," Acornstar replied, gazing around the camp.
Acornstar felt nostalgia wash over her. The busy environment of the camp reminded her of what WindClan had been like when she was a kit. She could still remember playing with Foxclaw...
Afraid that she might look undignified, she turned her head away from the kits. Echoflight soon came into the camp, Dawnmist behind her, both carrying prey. Acornstar felt sick looking at Dawnmist. Her dreams flashed into her mind. Would Dawnmist turn around and murder her like the latest dreams?
She shook her head, telling herself to get it together. She was here to talk to Echoflight.
"White Dove!" she called imperially.
"Acornstar!" Echoflight mewed warmly. "I thought you'd come. Let's go."
Acornstar followed the black she-cat through the woods and out of ThunderClan territory. They arrived at a cave.
"This is the Cave of Peace," Echoflight told her.
They padded inside, a river flowing through the river with small splashes. It felt like a good place.
"You need help, don't you? You looked weary at the last gathering," Echoflight guessed.
"I did," Acornstar remembered. The night before the gathering, she had had a terrible nightmare. She had woken up with a shock, her claws digging into her own skin.
"My brother died. Can you help me?" Acornstar questioned.
"Sure," Echoflight shrugged. "You need to learn that you can't do anything about it. You might feel regret that you didn't work harder to help him. But the past is the past and we can't change it. He's in StarClan and he's watching you, I can guarantee it. If this doesn't help, try going to the Moonpool."
"Thanks, anything else?" Acornstar asked abruptly.
This was a bad idea. I shouldn't have come. It's just making me more hurt to talk about him.
"We can look over some coping mechanisms to deal with the pain. But first make sure you're getting enough sleep. Make sure you're talking to other cats regularly. Don't be scared to talk about it. You have medicine cats who will help you, and if you need more advanced help, you can come see me again. Everything's going to be okay, it'll all work out. Lots of other cats care for you, they'll encourage you and help you."
"Care for others, too. This'll help take your mind off bad things. You can keep yourself busy to take your mind of it but don't overwork yourself." Echoflight finished.
"Thanks." Acornstar decided that perhaps Echoflight could help.
While it hurt to talk about Foxclaw, Acornstar and Echoflight worked out some coping mechanisms to help her, and she left at sunset much happier.
For once, she had a sleep that wasn't plagued with nightmares of Dawnmist, Demonclaw and Foxclaw.
A/N i'm sorry its about 100 words shorter than 1000, but i rushed this chapter and i haven't had a chance to edit it yet.
