Chapter 11
During the war with Rowanstar in Ebony's Roots.
Echoflight sat in the camp, chewing slowly on a squirrel. The sun was high above her, making her sleepy and she thought that she could've fallen asleep if she wanted to. And it would be because of the sun. Or, because she was spending every night healing cats. Most of the warriors were out of camp, patrolling ShadowClan's border. Ebonywind had left ShadowClan to join her family in ThunderClan. Echoflight didn't really approve of cats swapping Clans so easily, but she could deal with it.
"Echoflight! Luckystar wants to talk to you!" Goldenperch called from the Highledge where she was resting in the sun.
Echoflight mumbled a response and sleepily padded up the rocks and entered Luckystar's den. "Hi."
Luckystar's eyes were panicked and she paced back and forth, as if in a trance. "I need your help."
"I assumed as much," Echoflight rolled her eyes but sat down patiently.
"This war is driving me crazy!" Luckystar mewed in exasperation. "Rowanstar is an idiot, for many reasons. What he's doing isn't worth it. We're both going to lose cats!"
"Hey, don't panic," Echoflight soothed her, running her tail on the older she-cat's spine.
"How can I not panic?" Luckystar snapped before controlling herself. "Sorry."
"It's fine," Echoflight nodded. "I can help you."
That night, Echoflight took Luckystar to the Cave of Peace for the first time. Like all the other cats, Luckystar gasped as she saw the glowing river and the moonlight trickling in. She sat down on the soft moss, Echoflight right next to her.
"Some coping mechanisms for stress that can help you are counting back from 100. It's because when you're counting backwards, it takes more effort than counting forwards. It puts everything into reverse. You think harder. Therefore, your brain is slowed down, if that makes sense." Echoflight explained.
"Alright," Luckystar dipped her head. "Anything else?"
"Well, to prepare yourself mentally, you might need to learn how to understand your emotions better. You need to understand what you're feeling. If you don't, it'll only make it worse. I can help you if you answer some questions," Echoflight suggested.
"Sure," Luckystar shook out her golden-brown pelt. "Go ahead."
"Why are you stressing over the war?" Echoflight questioned.
"I'm worried for Ebonywind. She's my kit, even though she grew up in ShadowClan. I hate how that fox-heart treated her. In fact, I hate the way he treats his whole Clan." Luckystar growled.
"I agree with you completely," Echoflight nodded. "I-uh, one of my clients, is in ShadowClan, and apparently Rowanstar didn't even let his medicine cats treat her. They had a huge argument on it, though they didn't tell any cat out of their Clan."
"Ebonywind might be able to tell me about it," Luckystar mused. "I'm also worried that a cat that I love will get hurt. You're my kin too. I'm worried for Goldenperch. We're getting older and not as spry as before. I have lives to spare, I'll be fine. But Goldenperch works really late every night."
"If she needs help, I'll talk to her," Echoflight offered before hesitating. "Do you mind telling me how many lives you have left?"
Luckystar licked her chest fur quickly. "Not many. I lost two lives during DarkClan's war with us. I lost a few more after that. I only have four lives left."
"That's more than enough," Echoflight mewed cheerfully. "And I'm sure if you keep counting backwards, you'll be able to calm yourself. You could also make a habit out of something, like a stroll around the territory at sunset every day. It'll become natural after a moon or so and doing something routinely like that will help too."
"Thank you, Echoflight," Luckystar mewed gratefully. "This really helped. I don't regret my decision to appoint you as White Dove."
"There you are, Echoflight!" a voice mewed.
Echoflight turned to see Frogfern coming inside. His eyes widened as he took in the cave for the first time. She almost purred at his shocked expression.
"I'll leave you to it," Luckystar purred before padding out of the cave.
"I missed you today," Frogfern licked her ears tenderly. "How's White Dove going?"
"White Dove is really tired right now," Echoflight lay down, being careful of her swollen belly. "It's hard coming up here almost every night. I should be resting in the nursery, but I feel like I owe all of my clients."
"A quick question, but who're you helping right now?" Frogfern mewed.
"Speckleflower of ShadowClan with her broken leg," Echoflight confided in him. "Amberclaw of RiverClan with anger issues, Dawnmist with grief and trauma, and apparently Luckystar now, with stress about the war."
"Tell me about it," Frogfern agreed. "The war's driving me crazy. Rowanstar doesn't know how to give up a grudge."
"Exactly." Echoflight's fur bristled. A twig creaked outside, and she shivered. "Let's head back. I'm not seeing anyone tonight."
"Should I be jealous?" Frogfern smirked.
"You're the only one for me," Echoflight retorted.
Frogfern twined his tail with hers.
"I wonder who I'll see next," she pondered after a bit. "Dawnmist's ready to stop seeing me at all apart from a session once a moon, and same with Amberclaw. I haven't seen her temper at all lately. Speckleflower could do with a few more sessions but she's swimming pretty much every day and Sandleaf doesn't need to come with her anymore. She can walk now! Luckystar- well, this war will end soon. I just hope we don't lose any cats. She'll be better."
"I have faith in you," Frogfern meowed.
"Next gathering, I'm going to look for cats that need help. Perhaps they're too shy or just don't know that I'm the White Dove. But really, it isn't hard to figure out." Echoflight decided.
"I'll be with you no matter what," Frogfern promised.
A/N okay look i know Echoflight/Frogfern isn't getting much development, but this isn't about their love story with a heroic ending, it's about Echoflight's journey as the White Dove. Which is why i haven't put much effort into them; it's just not the main focus. Sorry for the short-ish chapter again, but with the A/N i've got just above 1000 words, which isn't too bad. Chapter 11 will start to get more exciting i believe!
