Chap.1 A Stranger
Wavekit leapt for Brightkit, his sister dodging out of the way, causing him to crash into Barkkit. The brown tom shoved him off, glaring at him through narrowed eyes.
"Cut it out!" He hissed. "Can't you two at least act like we're about to be apprenticed?" Straightening up, Wavekit's amber gaze scanned Leopard Clan Camp.
His eyes landed on a pile of stones that made a natural staircase, leading towards a small cave. Cedarstar's brown head appeared, her pale blue gaze scanning the camp before she emerged.
Wavekit watched as she made her way over to him. "Where's Finchdapple?" She asked, looking at Wavekit. "I'm not sure, she told us to stay in the nursery before leaving." He answered honestly.
Cedarstar, being leader, left the nursery to continue her duties, so she left Finchdapple in charge of the kits. Finchdapple proved to be a good mother in her place though, she watched the kits like a hawk and was overly protective.
Cedarstar however, was having none of it. Even though she left her kits, she still made sure they had everything they needed. She was also incredibly protective of her kits, but Wavekit wasn't completely sure why.
When he had asked Finchdapple she told him to "Hush, none of that is your business and you'll hurt Cedarstar if you bring that up around her!"
Cedarstar could also be a little hard on Finchdapple. One time she caught Wavekit and Brightkit messing with Adderblaze, the loyal clan deputy, and and swept them away, sharply cuffing him on the ear saying, "Don't you have any respect!?" And Cedarstar lectured her on being too hard on the kits.
Finchdapple never took it personally though, she always seemed to have some kind of understanding when Cedarstar was over protective.
"I'll go find her, try and keep your fur clean." Cedarstar said, turning and disappearing among their clanmates. "Hey Wavekit, wanna race?" Brightkit asked, her eyes sparkling at the thought.
"Cedarstar said wait right here!" Barkkit whined. "Whatever, Cedarstar's not Finchdapple!" Brightkit exclaimed, jumping on top of Wavekit. In Finchdapple's eyes, Barkkit was perfect. She would always compare Brightkit and Wavekit to him, praising him on how he always did what he was told.
Barkkit glared at his littermates, but said nothing. When it came to Cedarstar she loved all of them equally, although she was slightly more overprotective of Wavekit.
Finchdapple appeared, ushering them all into the nursery. She groomed Barkkit first, then Brightkit, who wiggled, trying to get away.
"Stop moving!" Finchdapple hissed, roughly licking the kit. "If you want to look good, hold still!" Brightkit managed to get away and bounded out of the nursery after her brother.
Wavekit obediently padded over to her, allowing her to groom his fur. "Does your sister look decent?" She asked. Wavekit was surprised by how tired she sounded. "Cedarstar must have really told her off this time!" He thought.
He joined his littermates, their groomed fur gleaming underneath the sunhigh light, except Brightkit, who had random tufts of fur still sticking up. "Cedarstar's gonna kill me." Finchdapple muttered, sweeping the kit back into the nursery. Wavekit quivered with excitement when he saw Cedarstar making her way over to the Tallstone.
He admired his mother's calm demeanour and her sleek pelt. "All cat's old enough to climb the rocks gather beneath the Tallstone for a clan meeting!" Her voice pierced the air. His mother's mew was filled with undeniable joy.
"That's your cue!" Finchdapple hissed, shoving Brightkit out of the nursery. Wavekit nervously got to his paws, making his way to the Tallstone while he glanced around the camp fearfully.
Barkkit seemed calm, while Brightkit shared Wavekit's nerves. The young she-cat's eyes sparkled with excitement.
Wavekit glanced around camp, finding several cat's looking at them happily. Noticing both his littermates stepped forward he realized he must've missed the cue to come forwards.
He hurriedly got in line next to Barkkit, earning a glare from his brother. "Wavekit." Cedarstar began. "From this moment on, you will be known as Wavepaw."
Cedarstar's gaze glowed with pride as she said, "I will mentor you." This received a few shocked gasps but no one contradicted Cedarstar as she leapt down from the Tallstone and touched noses with her son.
Still surprised, Wavepaw moved to the side, looking over at his equally shocked littermates. Cedarstar regained her position on the Tallstone and continued. "Brightkit, from this moment on, you will be known as Brightpaw." Brightpaw puffed out her chest proudly.
Cedarstar'as gaze shifted from the apprentice to someone in the crowd. "Brookcloud, you are ready to take on an apprentice." Wavepaw stifled an amused purr. Brookcloud, their sister, was one of the most patient cat's in the clan, which would be good for Brightpaw and all her energy.
"You will be mentor to Brightpaw." She continued. "Brookcloud, you have shown yourself to be a patient and kind warrior. Do all that you can to pass on what you know down to Brightpaw."
Wavepaw happily watched as his litter-sister touched noses with their sister, and her new mentor. The two she-cats turned and made their way over to where he was sitting.
"Barkkit, from this moment on you will be known as Barkpaw." The poised she-cat continued. "Heatherfall, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You will be mentor to Barkpaw."
"Guess she's keeping it in the family this time." Brookcloud murmured, her warm gaze focused on their mother. "Heatherfall, you have shown yourself to be a brave and graceful warrior. Do all that you can to pass down what you have learned to Barkpaw."
Barkpaw and Heatherfall touched noses and the clan began to chant, "Wavepaw!Brightpaw!Barkpaw!" Wavepaw beamed, his gaze shifting from his clan to his littermates as their new mentors talked to them.
"Are you excited Wavepaw?" Cedarstar asked, gently laying her tail across his shoulders. Wavepaw gave her a shy smile. "I guess..." he trailed off.
"Lets go see the territory, shall we?" She suggested. Wavepaw gave her an excited nod and bounded after her out the camp entrance.
"Something you'll notice about the clans is each territory." Cedarstar stated. "They usually choose a specific place for their territory, this is because each clan has their own strengths." Wavepaw nodded.
"I'm sure you know by now that the forest in LeopardClan is very rocky." She continued, glancing at Wavepaw. He quickly looked away, pricking his ears to focus. "That's because our skill is climbing."
"What skills do the others have?" He asked. "WaterClan is good at swimming, NightClan is very stealthy, and FlameClan..." The leader trailed off, her gaze darkening. "Cedarstar?" Wavepaw asked nervously.
Cedarstar shook her head. "FlameClan cat's are usually up to no good. Their always sticking their noses where they don't belong." She spat. Wavepaw flinched at the she-cat's sudden out burst.
Seeming to notice he was uncomfortable, Cedarstar's fur laid flat. "They dont necessarily have a special trait, just that they are very strong and usually have a bulkier build."
Wavepaw nodded, still shocked by his mother's sudden ranting. "What's that smell?" He asked, changing the subject. "That would be WaterClan, we're heading towards their border right now actually."
Intrigued, Wavepaw crept forwards, cautiously scenting the air. "They stink." He said, wrinkling his nose. "They are right here." A voice spat.
Surprised, he leapt to his paws, meeting the blue gaze of a gold tabby. She glared at him, more cats emerging behind her. "Marigoldfoot, what's going on here?" A blue tom asked, his amber gaze wise.
"Hello Dropstar." Cedarstar said, meeting the WaterClan leader's gaze. Wavepaw watched them closely, noticing something passed between both cats.
"Cedarstar." He said with a nod. "What can WaterClan do for you?" Wavepaw was surprised at the tom's kind tone. Cedarstar flicked her tail. "I was just showing Wavepaw our territory."
Marigoldfoot snorted. "Not just your territory." Wavepaw heard her mumble. "Relax, he's just a curious apprentice." Dropstar said lightly. Wavepaw noticed that Marigoldfoot and a dark gray she-cat with amber eyes exchanged suspicious glances.
Dropstar flicked his tail to Cedarstar and led the two she-cats away. "Who was that?" Wavepaw asked curiously. His mother purred, gazing at him fondly. "Oh Wavepaw." She sighed.
Snapping out of it, she said, "He's Dropstar, leader of WaterClan." Wavepaw nodded, still curious. "Who were those warriors, were they patrolling with him, can we go on a patrol?" Cedarstar gave an amused purr.
"Those warriors names are Driftfrost and Marigoldfoot, and yes they were patrolling." She answered. "Can we go on a patrol?" Wavepaw asked, repeating his question.
"Maybe one day, the experience will be good for you." She replied, leading him away from the border. "Cedarstar!" A dark brown she-cat shouted, exploding through the undergrowth.
"Fawnclaw?" Cedarstar gasped, hurrying over to the she-cat's side. "What's wrong, are you okay?" Fawnclaw nodded. "Yes, but Adderblaze needs you, a random cat just showed up at camp and is demanding to see you."
Cedarstar nodded. "Come Wavepaw." She said, ushering him towards camp. "We must go quickly."
