Contest Entree (#7): MysteriousCurl
"Wow! It's so big out here!" Bluefur had taken the three of us, me Mistykit, and Stonekit, out of the camp. We were playing a game called Secret Escape, where you had to try to sneak out of camp without letting any imaginary ShadowClan warriors spot and capture us. The moon was high in the sky, and Bluefur had just carried us up and out of the ravine. It turned out that the world was a lot bigger than I thought it could be. Trees stretched in every direction, their leafless branches waving in the moonhigh breeze. It was cold, yes, but all the sights to see were amazing.
"I'm going first." I looked over to see Stonekit racing into the trees. "Come on, you two." I turned and scampered after him, Mistykit and Bluefur trailing behind me. The snow went up to my belly, but I didn't care. I copied Stonekit in frontmof me and hopped from snowdrift to snowdrift. Once or twice, my mother had to pull me out of a particularly deep snowdrift, but once I got the hang of it, it was a pro at snow-running.
Once, Stonekit glanced back at my mother, and asked, "Does the forest go on forever?" She had shook her head. After a long time of trekking through the frozen forest, I was getting tired. Beside me, I could feel Mistykit shivering.
"Can we go home now?" I whimpered. I couldn't even feel my paws. "It's cold and I'm tired.
"We have to keep moving," my mother insisted, and pulled my brother out of a deep snowdrift. The snow had clung to him, and his tiny body had small icicles clinging to his stone-gray fur.
Mistykit stopped in her tracks. "I don't want to play this game anymore!" I padded over to her and crouched next to her, sharing my body heat with hers. Suddenly, Bluefur's blue eyes lit up.
"I have an idea," she announced. She walked over to a small patch of shriveled ferns and dug a hole in the snow. "In you go." I stumbled into the hole and my brother and sister did the same. We now shared all our body heat combined, and we were also out of the biting wind. "Wait here." My mother hurried away. I waited, and what seemed like lifetimes away, Bluefur returned. All three of us were now too exhausted to speak or whine. She picked me up into the cold wind and carried me a couple of foxlengths away.
"I was just getting warm," I complained. It drained all the energy from me to speak those few words. Finally, she set me down in a snow hole that resembles the one I was just in. Carefully, my mother lay me down. Soon, she returned with Mistykit and Stonefur. I closed my eyes, suddenly feeling very sleepy, despite what was happening around me. The last thing I heard before darkness took me away was Stonekit asking, "Did we win?"
"Of course, little one. You won."
Suddenly, by some instinct, I jerked my eyes open to see a snowy white cat in front of me. Looking down, I saw my body, still as can be. My mother was trying to wake me, up. "Who are you? And where am I?" I asked the strange cat.
"I'm Snowfur. You are in StarClan. I will take care of you now, but don't worry, you'll see your mother and brother and sister some day." I wasn't worried, though. There was a sort of calm about this cat, and I felt I would come to like her. I turned back to my mother, who was now crouching over my limp body.
Goodbye, Bluefur. I will never forget you.
