Chapter Two

Brokenkit

Brokenkit couldn't see, everything was black! She had to follow her nose to get to Stonepelt, her mother.

Voices rose behind her and she turned to look but was greeted by the same sight; darkness. But she could make out the voices.

"-Ever open?" A small voice asked.

"I doubt it." Another voice growled, "I bet that even if she does then she'll just be blind like Frostear!"

There was a small thud as something hit something - or someone.

"Ow! What was that for, Stonepelt?!" The same voice that had growled now seemed to shrink.

"Respect your Clanmates!" A gentle yet firm voice scolded the other cat.

"Sorry," murmured a very small, sad voice that had once been the growling cat.

I'm sick of being left in the dark!! I want to see! I want to be able to see who these cats are! Please! Brokenkit scrunched up her little face as she tried to force her eyes open. But her vision stayed dark for moment after moment until, finally, a blinding light filled her eyes.

Brokenkit blinked several times before her vision adjusted to the light flowing into the nursery. A beautiful gray she-cat with warm yellow eyes entered her field of vision, blocking out everything else.

"Brokenkit! Your eyes are open! And they're beautiful!" The she-cat praised Brokenkit, giving her a firm lick between her ears.

"Wh-what?" She mewed, frightened at the sudden change. But she soon realized that the gray she-cat was her own mother; Stonepelt.

"Oh, I was worried you wouldn't open your eyes but you foolled me!" Stonepelt smiled, moving aside for the other cats to see Brokenkit, or was it the other way around?

Three kits stood there, staring at Brokenkit in amazement. One of them, a black one with a bunch of brown patches and misty eyes that seemed to change color, moved forward and sniffed Brokenkit's small head.

"H-hello..?" She mewled in fright, shrinking away from the tom. He blinked.

"Oh, yeah, sorry! I'm Squirrelkit!" He meowed in a very cheerful voice, his misty eyes shining.

Another one of them, a white one with brown patches and misty eyes as well, stepped forward. "My name's Splashkit."

The two toms turned to the final kit, a brown tabby with dark, almost black eyes. "And this is Thornkit," mewed Splashkit after his littermate didn't introduce himself.

"I-I'm Brokenkit..."

"We know!" Squirrelkit bounced up and down on his paws, excitement radiating off of him.

"If Stonepelt's fine with it then why don't you three show Brokenkit around camp?" A brown she-cat with a black muzzle mewed, her misty eyes matching that of Splashkit's and Squirrelkit's perfectly but Thornkit's eyes stood out.

Thornkit was certainly different; being one color and all. This fascinated Brokenkit as she stared at him, waiting for him to mew or laugh or do something polite like that. But, to her utter shock, he glared at her and turned toward the she-cat.

"But mother-"

"I'm fine with it," Stonepelt interrupted Thornkit as she nuzzled Brokenkit then she stood, "I need to talk to Falconblaze, anyway."

The other she-cat, Ivyheart, nodded with a warm glow in her eyes, before Thornkit could utter another mew, she said, "Go on, now. Have fun and stay out of trouble!"

Splashkit rounded up Thornkit while Squirrelkit guided Brokenkit out of the nursery, Stonepelt followed but headed off into a different direction.

Splashkit slowed down as they walked to the apprentices den first, he slowed his pace to match Brokenkit's. "Hi."

"Hello." She replied, stumbling as she followed them. Her heart thudded loudly in her chest while she tried not to trip over her own paws.

"Here, let me show you." Splashkit stopped and waited patiently as Brokenkit followed his example. "One paw in front of the other." He said, demonstrating.

"One paw in front of the other..." Brokenkit mumbled to herself, looking down to make sure she did it right. She placed one paw forward then looked up at Splashkit.

"Good! Do it again with the opposite paw."

Brokenkit did as he instructed and, soon she was able to walk without stumbling so much, although she still stumbled. "Thanks."

"It was nothing," Splashkit replied and she grew suspicious that he was embarrassed, but about what?

I don't understand this, she sighed inwardly, her frustration causing all three to look back at her. Her pelt heated in embarrassment.

"Something wrong?" Thornkit asked, it was the first time she had heard him act even a little caring.

"N-no!" Brokenkit's pelt felt even hotter at the concern she saw in all of their eyes.

"Are you sure?" Squirrelkit asked innocently, his tail flicking in curiosity.

"Yeah, now can we continue?" Brokenkit changed the subject and forced an impatient glint into her eyes. The thought suddenly hit her.

"Wait, what color are my eyes?"

"Well, one's yellow and the other is amber." Squirrelkit answered before the other two could even flick their tails. "Very pretty."

Brokenkit sensed the heat rushing back into her pelt, making her blink in embarrassment.

"Stop it, your clearly upsetting her." Splashkit snapped at his brother, ears pinned back.

"Splashkit, Squirrelkit," Thornkit growled, glaring at his two littermates. "This is no way to treat each other."

"Look at you, the one who was making fun of both Brokenkit and Frostear!" Splashkit spat back.

"Who's making fun of Frostear?"
