Chapter Twelve

Brokenkit

"Brokenkit..."

She lifted her head to find the source of the voice but found herself in a strange place where trees seemed to grow tall enough to reach the warriors of StarClan and the pool of water before he seems to glitter as brightly as StarClan themself.

"Hello?" Brokenkit called out, her voice echoing between the towering trees.

"Brokenkit..." The voice whispered again, seemingly coming from the pool.

Brokenkit crept forward cautiously, her ears pricked for any sign of danger. "Hello?" She repeated.

"Brokenkit... Come here..." The voice was nothing but a wisping sound between herself and the edge of the water.

Brokenkit, overcomed by her curiosity, came forward to the edge of the pool, "Where are you?"

"Down here," the voice answered.

The kit looked down to see her own reflection. But her reflection was of an older version of herself, with battle scars and a torn ear. "But..."

"You have found me," her reflection spoke, staring at her with those unsettling mismatched eyes.

"Yes..." Brokenkit was suddenly unnerved by herself.

Is this how everyone feels around me? She asked herself and suddenly she found herself undstanding why Thornpaw had been so mean at first.

"I am you," the older Brokenkit sighed. "And you are me."

"But how are you me when I'm me?" Brokenkit asked the reflection.

"Now is not the time for mouse-brained questions." She meowed back at Brokenkit. "I must tell you a secret."

"Like what?" Brokenkit shot back coldly.

"You cannot tell any cat what I am about to tell you," the older Brokenkit meowed sternly, "The lion's jaws will be enough to hide the path of light."

"What is it? A prophecy?" Brokenkit mewed, shrinking slightly away from the pool as a sudden dread filled her belly.

"Yes," her reflection answered, "Beware of the dangerous lion."

"What lion? Who's this lion?"

"The lion will pin you down until you starve," the reflection whispered, "Just remember to always look for the light..."

"What light?" Brokenkit blinked, her mind a flurry of thoughts.

"Lightsk-" But the older Brokenkit was not able to finish, her appearance faltered and began to fade. "I'm waking up! I need to leave! Take care and make wise decisions!" Then her reflection was gone.

Brokenkit

Brokenkit's eyes sprung open, her breath hitching as her sight momentarily failed and she lost sight of the nursery. But her vision returned and her breathing returned to normal as she glanced around the diserted nursery den. The only noise that penetrated the silence was the ragged breathing of Stonepelt and the songs of the crickets outside.

Brokenkit stood up, being as silent as the kit could, and crept out the entrance and into the darkness outside. The camp was empty except for the guard at the entrance. The new warriors, Blackscar and Snowflight, sat there. Their eyes glazed as their mind seemed to wander through the night.

Brokenkit padded toward them, a few leaves crinkling under her small paws. Blackscar instantly snapped to attention, his gaze shooting over to Brokenkit only to relax as he recognized her. Snowflight didn't seem that frightened at Brokenkit's sudden appearance, for she gave her a silent nod.

Blackscar opened his mouth to say something to Brokenkit when Snowflight headbutted his shoulder to stop him. When the tom looked over at her, she shook her head and realization crossed his face.

"What's wrong?" Brokenkit asked as she watched the two warriors in curiosity, "Did you lose your voices?"

Blackscar and Snowflight shook their heads in unison, Blackscar's scarred eye flashing in the moonlight.

"They cannot speak during their vigil." A meow sounded from behind Brokenkit, making her spin around, nearly tripping over her own paws.

"Cougarpaw?" Brokenkit asked, although she knew it was him, she was thrown off by the silver glow the moon put on his tan fur.

The apprentice nodded, "It's me. And someday you and I will have our own vigils."

"Why can't you talk?" Brokenkit meowed, confused on such a rule.

"Because it is a tradition made by StarClan," he mewed. "Now, you should be getting to bed. It's still night and the dawn patrol will be leaving soon."

"Can I see the dawn patrol?" The small kit asked excitedly, jumping up and down in her excitement.

Snowflight flicked her tail to Cougarpaw's paw, nodding her head in amusement. Blackscar and Cougarpaw shared a glance but they both seemed to agree with the white and black warrior.

"Alright," Cougarpaw sighed at last, "You can stay up and see the dawn patrol."

"So Cougarpaw, why are you up anyway?" Brokenkit prodded his ribs with her paw.

"I couldn't sleep..."

"Oh," Brokenkit nodded in understanding, settling down to wait for the patrol. "Me too."

Cougarpaw nodded silently, turning his gaze to StarClan above. "StarClan seems bright tonight."

"Yes, they do."

Aurora

The brown she-cat paced angrily in the old fox den where she and the cat she loves most - although he didn't seem to love her yet - slept until that mouse-brained ThunderClan took him as a prisoner. Now she must plan a way to save him before they kill him. But she'll need more cats for this.

Two named crossed her mind; Myn Myn and Fang.

The two cats always had a knack for fights, and that would make having them with her all the better.

But...

"Is it enough to save my dear Wolfcry?"
