Chapter Thirteen

Aurora

"Is it enough to save my dear Wolfcry?"

Aurora glared at her paws, of course they'd be enough!

The brown tabby turned sharply and padded out into the breaking dawn, her yellow eyes claws all their own as she picked up her pace in determination.

It took only moments to reach Twolegplace and down the Thunderpaths in the territory. Aurora darted from cover to cover, all her senses alert and sharp as she ran.

A large white tom barreled into her side, throwing her into a hedge next to the stone walkway Twolegs used and out the other side. Before the tom came in  pursuit, Aurora scrambled into a hole in the large wooden fence and to the other side. The place was empty of any and all smells except cat and crowfood.

"Ah, Aurora," a familiar voice purred to the she-cat's left, snapping her head around to face the other cat, Aurora relaxed slightly.

The sleek form of Myn Myn stood before her, a snarl edged across her face. "Where's your darling Wolfcry?"

"Captured." Aurora blinked as the white tom from earlier leaped down from the fence, his frosty eyes sparking with hostility. "What's happened to Fang? Who's this?"

"Fang has caused some... Problems. So, naturally, we replaced him." When Myn Myn saw Aurora's suspicious look, she added. "Oh, don't worry, he's still alive out there. Somewhere."

Aurora nodded at the white tom, "And this is his replacement then?"

"Aurora, meet Blizzard. Blizzard, this Aurora." Myn Myn introduced them patiently.

A tortoiseshell she-cat crawled out from the hole in which Aurora had used, a plump squirrel clamped in her jaws.

The she-cat approached Blizzard, her eyes glistening in pride as she dropped it at his paws. "It was all I could find, other than crowfood."

Blizzard licked her cheek warmly, although he still glared at Aurora, "It will do, Shy."

The she-cat he had called Shy nodded proudly and backed away to stand at his flank. Her eyes were much kinder than both Myn Myn's and Blizzard's as she gazed upon Aurora.

"Now, tell us," Myn Myn meowed dryly, "Exactly what happened to Wolfcry?"

Brokenkit

After watching the dawn patrol, which consisted of Thornpaw, Frostleap, and Snowflight, Brokenkit was on her way to listen to an elder's tale to pass time.

As she entered the den, she heard one of them saying.

"That kit is something of a curse."

"Your wrong, Coldstream. The kit will be a hero. Just you wait," a creaky, feminine voice purred.

Before another cat could say anything, Brokenkit entered the den, her tail swaying gently.

"Ah, Brokenkit," the blind she-cat, Frostear, meowed in that same creaky voice. "Have you come to listen to a tale?"

Brokenkit nodded calmly, her head still wondering about who they had been talking about. "Yes, Frostear."

"Well, are you just going to sit there all day?" Coldstream growled crankily, "What kind of story would you like to hear?"

"I don't know," Brokenkit looked at her paws in embarrassment.

Coldstream looked about to scold her but Longblaze cut him off.

"I believe the story of Dustflight and Ferntail will suit Brokenkit's interests." The orange tom spoke quickly and clearly.

Coldstream grunted in a grudging agreement as Frostear began the story.

"When Dustflight and Ferntail were only apprentices, they met at a gathering. Before they were born a prophecy had said that the fern will fly higher than the stars with the help of dust. When the met it was love at first sight." Frostear paused and Longblaze continued for her.

"But they knew they couldn't be together and so when Dustflight took on his warrior name, he asked Maplefur to be his mate. She has agreed and they had three kits together, Mudkit, Tigerkit, and Petalkit. When Ferntail found out she was furious, she begged to go to the next gathering and called Dustflight out on it. But when he said he had moved on, Ferntail grew even more furious and murdered Maplefur during the gathering. Dustflight was devastated and he didn't even care when a cat killed Ferntail." Longblaze paused and Coldstream took up the story.

"Dustflight decided to separate his three kits. He kept Mudkit in ThunderClan, he gave Tigerkit to RiverClan, and Petalkit to WindClan. A few moons later when his kits were apprenticed, Dustflight had a vision of Maplefur and he couldn't take it any longer, so he went out late at night and swallowed deathberries. But they say because he had killed himself, Dustflight still walks among us, unseen." Coldstream finished with a satisfied nod.

"What happened to his kits? Did Ferntail end up in the Dark Forest?" Brokenkit questioned in awe and curiosity as she gazed in respect to her elders.

"Mudpaw became Mudtail and then, he became leader. Tigerpaw left RiverClan and became Fang. Petalpaw received her warrior name, Petalheart, just as she passed to StarClan." Longblaze purred.

"And yes, Ferntail did go to the Dark Forest after she murdered Maplefur." Frostear meowed with a flick of her tail.

"Any other stories you would like to hear?" Coldstream asked, seemingly out of his cranky mood.

"Yes! Yes!" Brokenkit purred swiftly, almost afraid of them changing the subject. "Can you tell me about LionClan? I've heard some cats say the name but none would tell me what it meant."

"Of course," Frostear started but was cut off by a loud yowl from outside.

"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather here under the Highledge for a Clan meeting!"
