Chapter Nine

Dawnlight

"Silverkit - Silverkit is dead!"

Dawnlight turned to glance at Lionkit in disbelief before she bent down to nudge the limp body of Silverkit. She nudged her again; nothing. Dawnlight rested her muzzle on Silverkit's unmoving flank and waited for the rise and fall of her breathing, but it never came.

Silverkit is dead... The words echoed in her head as she stared at the deceased kit, who was barely five moons old and would've became a very wise warrior someday.

Sparrowkit pulled her out of her shock as he touched his nose to her shoulder, "Who are they?" He pointed with his tail at Brokenkit and that other kit whose name was unknown to Dawnlight.

"Brokenkit and I don't know who the other is," Dawnlight's meow was halfhearted and hollow, even to herself.

Sparrowkit nodded and, dragging Lionkit along with him, went over to huddle with the ThunderClan kits. Dawnlight was about to object when she noticed Wolfcry beating back the ThunderClan apprentice and warrior, slowly making his way to the exit.

Oh no you don't, Dawnlight muttered under her breath before she screeched a battle cry and lunged at the bigger tom, sinking her claws into his back as she bit down on the scruff of his neck. The tom screeched in fury and bucked, throwing Dawnlight off and giving the two ThunderClan she-cats time to retreat and recover.

Darktail, the ThunderClan deputy, and Thornstep hissed in unison and bounded in to help take down the formidable Wolfcry.

Two other warriors whom Dawnlight did not know gathered around the kits, protecting them from any straying claws or flailing tails.

Brokenkit

Brokenkit huddled underneath Falconblaze and Frostleap as the older cats fought the unbelievably strong tom. A shiver ran down her spine and a comforting warmth spread through her flank as Thornkit pressed against her. The slightly older kit looked just as frightened as she did but he seemed to be able to keep his head together as the two RiverClan kits huddled nearby, their eyes glowing in fear.

"Hey," Brokenkit whispered urgently, "Hey, you two, come here; you'll be safer."

The two kits shared a glance before cautiously creeping under the two ThunderClan warriors and pressing against Thornkit and Brokenkit.

"Who are you?" One of them asked, his pelt a dark brown tabby color.

"I am Brokenkit," she mewed emotionlessly, trying to hide her fear to help sooth the kits.

"And I'm Thornkit."

"I'm Sparrowkit," the brown tabby nodded submissively, his ears flat against his head.

"My name is... Is Lionk-k-kit..." The golden kit mewed in a small voice, bowing his head and making Brokenkit loose sight of his white chin.

Suddenly Falconblaze hissed in pain, dropping onto his belly and nearly crushing the kits as he rolled. The tom - who Brokenkit presumed to be Wolfcry - was raking his claws down Falconblaze's spine, a snarl on his face.

Brokenkit whirled around to see Gingerpaw trying to stand, Darktail limping over to help Falconblaze but tripped, Goldenwing limp, Thornstep on his back, and Dawnlight sprawled out with blood leeking from her jaws. Frostleap was there last chance.

Brokenkit spun to face the she-cat, "Save my father! Me and Thornkit will take care of the kits!" She ordered before turning back to Thornkit, "Get them out of here!"

Thornkit looked uncertain, "What about you?"

"I'll follow you out," Brokenkit declared as Thornkit nodded and they began to herd Sparrowkit and Lionkit outside.

------------------------------------------------------

Frostleap

Frostleap was stunned to be taking orders from a kit but she knew Brokenkit was right; she had to finish this fight or they'll all end up like that poor silver furred kit.

Frostleap whirled to face Wolfcry, her fur bristling and her hackles raised. She lunged forward, scoring her claws over his face, making Wolfcry release Falconblaze and tackle her instead.

Wolfcry dragged his claws over her chest and his weight crushed her ribs, forcing the breath from her lungs. Frostleap gasped and raised her head to chomp down on the rogue's ear, ripping it in half.

Wolfcry snarled and rose to his hindlegs, about to come crashing down on Frostleap, which would surely crush her ribs, but she rolled and climbed to her paws. But before she could do anything, Falconblaze, with his last bit of strength, locked his jaws into Wolfcry's leg. With Wolfcry distracted, Frostleap rammed into his ribs, pushing him onto his back and bringing her jaws around his throat.

"You wouldn't kill me," Wolfcry gurgled as blood oozed from his drawn back lips. "Because I'm your brother."

Frostleap glared into his yellow eyes, she bit down harder and a choking sound came from the tom before she released him and backed away. Shame filled her blue eyes as she really didn't have the courage to kill her kin, instead she raked her claws over his ribs to make sure he could not fight back.

Frostleap turned to examine her fallen Clanmates. First she went to Goldenwing, who was limp and motionless. Frostleap lowered her ear to Goldenwing's muzzle, a heartbeat later and she felt the golden she-cat's warm, ragged breath.

Next, Frostleap went to Darktail, who had fallen and refused to get back up.

"Are you okay?" Frostleap asked, nudging him carefully.

"Yeah, that foxheart just crushed my legs." Darktail wheezed, "Just give me a moment."

Frostleap nodded and went to Gingerpaw, who was still trying to stand. "Are you okay?" She repeated.

Gingerpaw nodded and, without a word, raised her paws to show the scratches and scars on them.

It seems my brother was only trying to slow them... Frostleap sighed as she padded over to Thornstep, who was lying on his back with his eyes closed.

"What's wrong, Thornstep?" Frostleap asked carefully.

His eyes fluttered open and he suddenly scrambled to his paws.

"StarClan!"
