Spark's Grief - Chapter 10
Spark cast a longing look back towards the river before taking the hard path. She followed Eclipse back to their cave and shared stories about Dawnmist, played with the kits, and taught Emberstorm about the world around them. Then, one day, Spark came back to the cave after going hunting alone to see Eclipse wasn't there.
Where is she?
Spark, she's left you. Just like everyone else.
Numb with pain, Spark staggered into the cave.
"What's wrong, mother?" Emberstorm asked.
"Mother?" Wild Wind echoed.
It turned out that Eclipse had saved Wild Wind shortly before Spark had gone to the river.
Autumn was still quiet, picking at a mouse.
"Kits, where has Eclipse gone?" Spark asked.
"She left." Emberstorm stated clearly.
She left, Spark. It's true. She won't be coming back.
Please, Grief. Tell her to come back! I actually liked her. She was a friend.
I cannot change the past, Spark. And the future is set in stone.
Spark pushed past Emberstorm, who was closest to the entrance, and left the den. "I'm going to hunt. To clear my mind. Look after the other kits, Emberstorm."
Emberstorm nodded slowly before nuzzling Autumn closer to himself and Wild Wind.
Spark looked towards the river and a burning desire filled her. Storming down to the river, courage filled her as she prepared to dive in.
Spark, DON'T.
I must. Everyone keeps leaving me, Grief. You're right. I remember when you told me I was a curse. I believe you now, happy?
No! I'm not hap-
Grief paused. Spark looked around worriedly, wondering what could have caused Grief to stop in one of her lectures.
Spark, leave the river. Right now.
Unlike earlier arguments, Grief's voice was firm and there was a tone of warning in it.
Why? Spark challenged. I don't listen to you. I'm staying.
Spark, you must leave. Immediately.
No. I won't-
Spark was suddenly bowled over by a red shape. Yelping, she clawed at the animal.
Who attacked me?
Backing away, Spark got a closer look at the animal. It had a cat shaped body with a long snout.
It was a fox.
Fine. I'll kill it.
SPARK! LEAVE RIGHT NOW!
Spark ignored Grief and charged at the fox. It was wiry and thin, but Spark's angry and sad mind didn't notice. She didn't notice its razor-sharp teeth either, so it came as a surprise when it bit her on her right foreleg.
Blood poured out of the wound and Spark froze.
It was day one hundred and twenty-two. The tom leered and jeered at her before biting her on her right foreleg. Blood gushed out and Spark was reminded of her mother's death.
Perhaps this is when I die.
The tom taunted her before turning to see a fox. His eyes grew wide and he shot away before Spark could even say something. The fox turned on her...
The fox turned on her, growling in its throat.
Spark, this fox is angry.
I know that!
No, Spark. It wants revenge.
Spark had leapt at the fox despite her injuries. She had been so reckless in a brief fight, that the fox had been killed. Surprised and shocked, she had stepped forwards only to bump into a fox kit.
"It had been guarding its kit!" Spark gasped. "And...that means this fox..."
Is its kit. Correct.
The fox opened its mouth and bit her other foreleg. She crouched over in pain.
Spark, this is your last chance. Run!
Spark obeyed. She swiped the fox one last time, then clouted it over the ears, before hobbling over to the cave, dripping blood.
Spark collapsed onto the hard floor, Emberstorm immediately at her side.
"Mother! Are you okay?" he yelped.
"I'm going to die." Spark suddenly saw clarity.
"Mother...don't leave me!"
"I'm sorry, little one. I don't have a choice. The stars predicted this. Emberstorm, it has been three moons since I rescued you. Three moons...I love you, Emberstorm, even though you are not mine. Autumn, Wild Wind, you two will both grow and become wonderful cats...unlike me."
Spark shuddered, her last breath leaving her. "Do not try to avenge me. Find a peaceful solution instead. I love you all..."
Spark stood up, her spirit leaving her body. A gray she-cat stood next to her.
"Grief." Spark dipped her head. "You were right. You were always right."
"I know." Grief spoke. "Courage, come on."
The ginger tom emerged from her body as well.
"Courage. Thank you for giving me the courage to continue on." Spark said respectfully.
"We will escort you to your final resting place. You do not belong among StarClan, or the Dark Forest. You will find your place with Truth."
Spark saw flashes of the future and blurred images of her kits, before nodding.
"Goodbye, kits, for the last time."
A/N
Wow! So I planned it to be much better than this ending, but I think this is okay. Any opinions?
