Chapter one
Whitekit fidgeted with happiness barely able to sit still. She glanced at her sister, Flowerkit who was as still as a statue showing no trouble of sitting still. Even her parents, Snowdrop and Barktail were glowing with pride but only their whiskers twitched. She forced herself to be as still as Flowerkit and turned to the log her leader, Stormstar, sat on as she said the annual apprentice-ship words.
"Whitekit and Flowerkit you two have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you two to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, Whitekit you will be known as Whitepaw and Flowerkit will be known as Flowerpaw. I hope Auracall and Goldenstrike will pass down all they know to you two. Auracall and Goldenstrike, you two are now ready to take on an apprentice. You two have shown great loyalty and devotion to Crystalclan and I hope you will teach this to them. Auracall you will mentor Whitepaw and Goldenstrike will mentor flowerpaw."
Whitepaw happily touched noses to Auracall and looked just in time to see Flowerpaw do it too. She let herself be surrounded by the chants of her and her sister's new names be yowled from every cat.
"Flowerpaw and Whitepaw must now journey to Crystal Caverns to receive their powers from their soul crystal. Wish them luck, meeting dismissed."
Whitepaw smiled happily walking to where Flowerpaw, Snowdrop, and Barktail was.
"Are you two ready?" Snowdrop asked with a gentle sway of her tail.
"Yes," Flowerpaw and Whitepaw meowed together.
"Good, we can make good time then" Her father meowed as he started to the camp entrance.
Whitepaw walked alongside her sister as the group of four padded to the crystal caverns. It took a bit to get there but there were safe travels all the way. White paw looked at the gaping cavern mouth.
"It's amazing! " Whitepaw couldn't help saying. As Flowerpaw nodded
"Don't get greedy, ok sis? " Flowerpaw meowed to her sister
"I won't if you don't. " She meowed playfully back.
Whitepaw waited a few moments as her sister entered then followed. She wasn't able to stay with her sister in the caverns even though she wished she could. She looked around and padded forward, crystals glimmered all around her but none of them were her's so she kept walking. She came to a fork in the path and looked down both paths in turn she blinked when her eye caught a brighter sparkle in the right path 'My soul crystal!' She walked down the right path and soon saw a glistening crystal in the corner of her eye and turned her head to it.
She stared at the crystal, it had to be the one! She started clawing the cave wall around it, scraping away pebbles as she started to weaken the caverns grip on the crystal. After a bit of effort whitepaw got the crystal out and lifted it up examining it before then lifting it with her tail. It glowed as she walked back taking twists and turns. Until the crystal stopped glowing and she saw the cave entrance.
Whitepaw held her crystal carefully and looked at Flowerpaw's.
"Your crystals is as green as grass, " She meowed " think you control grass? "
"I wouldn't know yet but if I had to pick I'd rather not just control grass. "
Whitepaw followed her parents as they started to glistening tree, the tree that held all the soul crystals before them. When they finally got there Flowerpaw stepped up next to Whitepaw and they both grabbed their soul crystal in their jaws and lifted them up letting them both float up to where two empty side by side branches grew.
"It's time to sleep. " Barktail meowed to his kits and mate glad that their time had come.
"Yes. It is time. " Snowdrop said proudly as she started curling up next to barktail.
Whitepaw curled up next to Flowerpaw and closed her eyes eager to meet her power. Flowerpaw lay next to her, their white and brown tabby fur mixing. She fell asleep and woke in a plain clearing with nothing but fog around her and grass below her. Whitepaw couldn't see two paw steps in front of her until four cats stepped forward banishing the thick fog. 'Wait four cats?!'
"Why are there four of you? " She asked concerned unsure of what was unfolding in front of her.
A orange tom with pelt of fire stepped forward. " You are a special cat, whitepaw. "
A blue she-cat stepped forward who had water surrounding her paws stepped forward "Once a cat was destined for four not one. Once that cat was born the signs started unfolding. That cat, obllivous to their destiny, walked head held high and tail swaying into the cave of Crystals. "
A brown tom who left tracks of mud behind him and seemed to be covered in dry dirt stepped forward speaking in a monotone voice like the cats before him. " You are that cat. You are destined for the path of four."
A white she-cat with wind whirling around her stepped forward last " Do not trouble yourself over this, young Whitepaw. Everything happens for a reason and you, Whitepaw, are to be granted four powers for a reason. "
"We, the powers of fire, water, earth, and air, " They all meowed in unison. " give you the powers of fire, that will let you show great strength and ferocity in the heat of battle. Water, the power that will allow you to nurture and help those around you when needed. Earth, the power that helps you stay determined and strong when all seems lost. And finally air, the power that enables you to think things through and go into battle with a plan. Do you promise to nurture these power and teach other cats after you how to use them if need be? " They looked at her their heads high as they waited for her response.
"I do. " Whitepaw managed to meow even though she didn't understand why she was picked to be special. She pushed it away as the four cats, in turn, licked her head. First, she felt as if her fur burst into flame then the feeling faded as soon as it had came. Next it felt like she was surrounded by water gently pulling her fur by the current that was ever changing then it too faded. Thirdly it felt like she got heavier but it didn't feel like a setback, it seemed like an advantage. Lastly she felt like she was lighter as if she could fly away right now but she didn't and when they were done she looked at each one in turn and started to ask a question when she blinked her eyes open.
Whitepaw realised her family was waiting for her when she woke. Whitepaw stood with a yawn then looked at her paws picturing all four powers on her claw tips. She shook her fur and followed her parents as they started back to camp. She walked next to her sister but she felt far away from her and her family as her mind whirled as newly gained powers seemed to be whizzing through her body as she walked causing her to sway slightly unsure of how nobody noticed,
She had ignored Flowerpaw each time she asked what her power was as she just kept her head down. When they got back to camp the clan was just waking up as dawn sunlight was filtering in the camp and the camp dens that were built there. Cats seemed to melt out of dens to welcome back the apprentices and congratulate them on their nw powers. Whitepaw was greeted by her mentor, Auracall, last.
"Ready to try your powers out? " The white she-cat asked. It was traditional for new apprentices to test their powers out as their first apprentice task.
"I need to talk to MoonWish first.. " Whitepaw meowed before walking to the medicine cat's den and peering in.
"Moonwish? Can I talk to you? " She meowed into the rock den.
Moonwish flicked her tail signaling for her to come in. As she sat down curling her tail around her paws and looking at Whitepaw.
"What's the reason? " The sleek grey she-cat asked calmly. " did something happen during the journey? "
"It's about my powers.. " Whitepaw started shifting her paws.
"s? Like multiple? " Moonwish asked keeping a cool attitude.
"yes, that's the problem! I have more than one power! What will I do? No cats ever had multiple powers before!" Whitepaw meowed concerned. 'Why me of all cats?!'
"There's nothing to do. The Sky Crystals have chosen you to be a special cat. They have chosen a cat and they have chosen you, Whitepaw, to be that cat." The Healing Medicine cat replied her eyes glittering like stars as she looked down at the apprentice. Moonwish had knew this was coming she just hadn't known who the crystals would choose.
Whitepaw looked at her paws making them first light fire before surrounding them by water as the dirt around her formed into pebbles and and lastly made a gentle breeze nudge Moonwish's herbs from across the den.
"But what will the clan think? " She asked looking up at the calm medicine cat sensing deep knowledge and wisdom in the older cats gaze.
"They will know you are special for a reason. Do not worry, stormstar will understand and that's all that matters. "
Whitepaw nodded leaving the den with Moonwish behind her. Moonwish walked to the leader's den and headed inside. She walked to where her mentor sat waiting.
"I'm ready. " She meowed to Auracall.
"That's good. " Auracall meowed then tilted her head. " what was the problem? "
"It was about my powers. It's better now though. " She meowed quickly. " Can we wait till tomorrow to test my powers though? Moonwish thought it would be a good idea... " she lied to her mentor wanting to wait a little still a little scared of what could happen.
Auracall tilted her head unsure why the apprentice would want to put it off, usually apprentices fell over their own paws when it came time to test their powers but if the medicine cat thought she should wait there was most likely a good reason.
"Ok we can wait then if you really want to.." She replied twitching her tail.
"Thanks Auracall, if you want we can still explore the territory." She suggested and smiled a her mentor nodded.
Auracall nodded and with that started walking out of camp only stopping to make sure Whitepaw was beside her. Whitepaw slowly memorized the territory as they traveled learning the best places to hunt, exactly where the Shimmer Pool, Glimmer tree, and Crystal caverns are, and where the worst places to hunt. Whitepaw yawned when they entered camp tired by the long day. The thoughts of having four powers instead of one returning as she stopped thinking about territory. She was still unsure of telling Flowerpaw about it. They were best friends but she was unnerved at the thought of telling her so she decided to sleep and think about it more in the morning. She headed into the apprentice den and noticed her sister flowerpaw near the back and padded over before she curled up next to her sister. Flowerpaw noticed she was there and shifted away. After the journey because she had ignored her it had hurt her feelings. Whitepaw sighed closing her eyes and falling asleep quickly and easily after the long eventful day.
The next day dawn light shone on her eyes as her mentor probed her side.
"Stormstar wants to see you." Auracall meowed to her apprentice. " She didn't say why. " She added before her apprentie could ask.
Whitepaw blinked waking up fully and stood leaving the apprentice den. She walked to the Stormstar's den and peered inside.
"Stormstar? " She called inside then entered when Stormstar meowed come in. " you wanted to see me? " she asked unsure if she was in trouble.
Stormstar nodded " it's about your powers, if you don't mind us talking about it. " The leader meowed sitting and gesturing with her tail for her to sit too.
Whitepaw sat down curling her fluffy white tail around her paws. " ya, we can... "
Stormstar nodded " I wanted to tell the clan of your powers, the clan needs to know a cat like this is among them. "
Whitepaw nodded slightly. " Ok.. I understand. " Whitepaw flicked her ear quickly. " Will we do it this morning? " She asked tilting her head a tiny bit.
Stormstar nodded "I will call a clan meeting in a few minutes. "
Whitepaw left the den and saw Flowerpaw sitting in the clearing. " Sis, " Whitepaw started before taking a deep breath. " I'm sorry about yesterday but I didn't tell you about my power for a reason. There was a "catch" when I got my power... " Whitepaw meowed to Flowerpaw biting her bottom lip.
"All cats old enough to have their own power gather beneath the log. " Stormstar meowed loud enough so cats even still sleeping would come. " I have called this early meeting to discuss pressing matters. Do not be alarmed by these words for it is not anything bad. A new apprentice has been granted with a new kind of destiny that could affect everyone. Whitepaw, step forward. " She stepped forward in front of all her clan mates. " Whitepaw, by the great Sky Crystals has been gifted with four powers instead of one. "
