Chapter 9
"Ravenclaw!" Mousepelt wailed, running in to the black tired tom. They tumbled over with mrrows of laughter and nuzzling muzzles and noses. ShadowClan bolted over and greeted their long lost Clanmate. Limptail, Snaketooth, and Brokenjaw stayed still, their faces filled with surprise.
"What happened?" Blackclaw called out.
"Were you injured?" Stoneheart asked.
"Who's this she-cat?" Viperfang glared at the stranger, who had come from the forest with Ravenclaw.
Mousepelt looked over to the cream and white colored she-cat. Her light green eyes looked down on Mousepelt. The brown speckled warrior remembered her days as a kit. Her mother giving her milk for a short while, then getting up and walking away, never to be seen again. Mousepelt could still remember her cold light green eyes, her short cream colored pelt, and her sour milked belly.
"Her name is Navi," Mousepelt answered before Ravenclaw could speak, "she's my mother."
"She's your mother?" Ravenclaw bristled.
"Why'd you bring that fox-hearted loner here?" Amberheart yowled to Ravenclaw, her voice tense, with something that seemed more important.
"I didn't know she was Mousepelt's mother!" Ravenclaw snapped.
"That doesn't matter now!" Jumbledstar stepped in. "Ravenclaw, what happened all those moons ago? How did you, out of all of my warriors, get caught by Twolegs?"
"Why don't you ask them?" Ravenclaw turned to Limptail, Snaketooth, and Brokenjaw, his claws unsheathed and teeth bared. The three stood silent, glaring at the black warrior as he neared them. "Tell them! Tell them how you almost got me killed and let those Twolegs take me away!"
A shocked silence hung in the air. Mousepelt felt everything in her crumble. Amberheart was still for a moment and then she unsheathed her claws. Ravenclaw was nose to nose with Limptail, his tail flicking angrily. Snaketooth, dug his claws in to the ground, bringing up the dirt beneath his paws. Brokenjaw was shaking and seemed close to going insane.
"I can't take it anymore!" Brokenjaw yowled. "Our plan has failed, Ravenclaw has returned! It is true, we injured Ravenclaw and brought him to Twoleg Place, he tried fighting us, but the Twolegs came out and took him away. We then injured ourselves so make it seem we tried saving him. Limptail came up with the idea. Without Ravenclaw, Snaketooth had the advantage of remaining deputy, then becoming leader, making me his deputy, and without Ravenclaw, Limptail would have Mousepelt all to himself and they would've have the strongest warriors the lake had ever known.
I'm sorry Ravenclaw," Brokenjaw went on, "you cared for Hollyforest more than I ever could as her kin and it's StarClan sent Mousepelt for you, not that cold hearted tom!"
"Traitor!" Snaketooth spat at the black and white tom.
Turtlefur bounded over to her ginger tabby mate. "It's not true!" she wailed. "Tell me it's not true, you wouldn't do that, just to keep your title to the Clan, right?" Ashpaw and Moonpaw stood nearby, their eyes full of worry and fear of the answer.
Snaketooth lowered his ears and head. With a sigh Snaketooth answered, "yes... It is true..."
turtlefur backed away, her eyes full of hurt. She pelted to her kits, who looked at their father shocked.
"It was Limptail!" Moonpaw shrieked. "Snaketooth wouldn't do that! Not without being forced in to it! it's Limptail's fault!"
"Open your eyes, mouse brain!" Ashpaw wailed. "It's clear Snaketooth cares more about nine lives than us!" the dark grey tom tried consoling his mother as Smoothpelt ran over to his sobbing sibling.
"No, I... I never mean to-" Snaketooth began.
"Enough!" Jumbledstar hissed. "ShadowClan will discuss this in their territory! The Daylight Gathering is over!" the ruffled leader ordered Frightwing, Blackclaw, Ravenclaw, Smoothpelt, and Ashpaw to guide his deputy and two warriors, to keep them from running off. Mousepelt bolted after her Clan, ignoring Amberheart's call to her.
As Mousepelt neared Ravenclaw, she turned and realized Navi was following them. Mousepelt was too focused on being next to Ravenclaw for the first time in moons to snap at her mother. She prayed to StarClan that Navi would understand why Mousepelt didn't want anything to do with her.
ShadowClan slowed as they neared their territory and Mousepelt was finally pushing her pelt up to Ravenclaw's. The black tom licked her head, ears, and cheek over and over again as if she were a newly born kit.
"I'm so glad you're safe!" Ravenclaw purred, pressing his head to hers. "Limptail didn't try hunting you did he? He didn't force you to do something you didn't want right?"
"No, I'm fine, but what about you?" Mousepelt answered. "The Twolegs didn't hurt you? Did they feed you well?"
"They were very kind," Ravenclaw assured, "but there was no way I was going to eat their rabbit pellet food! I was trapped inside their nest for moons, until they finally let me out, putting a collar on me! That's when I met Navi, she told me a way to leave Twoleg Place. She knew I wasn't like most kittypets, my muscles were too big to be a lazy Twoleg toy, so she cut the collar off and we had to go through Thunderpaths and Twoleg Places to return here, she's too old to travel back herself, so I offered her a place in ShadowClan, but I would have never guessed she was your mother."
"I understand," Mousepelt leaned on the tom's shoulder, "she never liked how I resembled my father more than her."
"You were too fuzzy and your specks did no justice for your ugly pelt!" Navi spat as she pushed past between them.
"So you left her to starve?" Flightwing snapped.
"Obviously, I did her a favor!" Navi retorted, flicking her tail at Ravenclaw before walking through the gorse tunnel to the camp.
Silverkit was walking out the medicine cat den with a foul smelling wad of moss in her mouth. She was heading to the elder's den, where the elders and kits stepped out. Jumbledstar stormed to the Hazel branch and glared down at his Clan.
"ShadowClan has received disturbing news about three of their warriors!" the grey leader announced. "Limptail, Snaketooth, and Brokenjaw are the reasons why our warrior, Ravenclaw, was taken by Twolegs!" angry yowls broke out across the camp. The kits shared a confused and frightened mew with one another. Yellowstone and Goldenpelt ran over and ushered them to the nursery.
"Banish them!"
"Exile!"
"Feed them to the badgers!"
"Kill them!"
"Give them to Twolegs!"
The suggestions went on. Turtlefur and Silvertongue sat close together in silence. Quakefoot, Trampleheart, and Morningflower spoke quietly amongst themselves, while Moonpaw sobbed in to Ashpaw's shoulder as he glared at his father.
Jumbledstar was silent for a moment, then he waved his tail for the Clan to be silent. "Limptail, Snaketooth, and Brokenjaw, you have been accused of trying to get rid of your Clanmate, for your own selfish desires! How do you plea?"
"Guilty..." Brokenjaw lowered his head.
"Guilty..." Snaketooth mewed looking from his mate to kits.
"Limptail?" Jumbledstar shot a dark look to the skinny tom.
"Guilty," Limptail admitted without a fight. "I hate Ravenclaw, Mousepelt should've been mine, our kits would have made ShadowClan great!"
Disagreeing hisses were spat at Limptail, but they were quickly silenced by Jumbledstar. "Snaketooth, your punishment is that you are to step down as deputy! The ceremony will be held for the new deputy before the sun goes down! Brokenjaw, your punishment is that you are never allowed to hunt with your mate or kits until your loyalty has been proven greater than your desires! And Limptail, your punishment will be-"
"To be the father of my kits!" Viperfang interrupted. "Mousepelt has taken away the tom that was meant to be mine and you wanted her, this will be my punishment as well, to have to lay with a traitor!"
"Very well," Jumbledstar agreed, "you are to live with this guilt as Viperfang's kits' father!"
limptail growled under his throat. The bushes then shook and Whisperstar and Amberheart appeared. Whisperstar had a clump of cream colored fur in her mouth.
Jumbledstar raised his flank and his fur raised. "Whisperstar!" he spat. "How dare you enter my camp as I pass judgment on my warriors!"
"Apologies, Jumbledstar," Whisperstar dropped the tuft of fur down on the ground, "but I believe we discovered who killed Silvertail!"
"How dare you!" Jumbledstar jumped down and neared the she-cat. "You blame ShadowClan for the death of your medicine-"
"I did it!" Limptail announced. All the cats turned to him.
"What?" Snaketooth's eyes widened. Brokenjaw looked just as surprised.
"She saw us get rid of Ravenclaw and said she'd keep her mouth shut, but then she came to me and said she was going to speak, so I had her silenced!"
"A medicine cat witnessed us and you thought it best to kill her?" Snaketooth snapped as Brokenjaw bristled.
"If a medicine cat witnessed us, we should have just given up!" Brokenjaw yowled. "Medicine cats are useful to all Clans!"
limptail hasn't told them what he did! They were innocent on that part! Mousepelt immediately felt sympathy for them. They were betrayed by a cat they thought was helping them!
"You fox-hearted mouse dung!" Amberheart shrieked. Whisperstar whipped her tail in front of her warrior to hold her back.
"Get out!" Jumbledstar ordered the she-cats, "I've made my decision to keep these warriors and there's nothing I can do to bring Silvertail back, now go!"
Whisperstar dipped her head and motioned for Amberheart to follow. The golden she-cat looked to Mousepelt, but she immediately turned her head. One of Mousepelt's Clanmates killed her friend's medicine cat.
"Ravenkit!" Jumbledstar called out his son's name. "To the center!" the leader then went back to the Hazel branch. With an uncertain look to Yellowstone, Ravenkit made his way to the center and sat down as if he were in trouble. "Since Ravenclaw has returned, there is no need for you to be named in his memory!"
The sandy tom's eyes widened as he looked to his littermates and back.
"Spirits of StarClan, you know every cat by name. I ask you now to take away the name from the cat you see before you, for it no longer stands for what he is." Jumbledstar began. "By my authority as Clan leader, and with the approval of our warrior ancestors, I give this cat a new name. From this moment on hewill be known as Beetlekit, for he was named in memory of Ravenclaw if he never returned." Jumbledstar jumped down and licked his son's head.
"Thank you Jumbledstar!" Beetlekit purred.
"Beetlekit! Beetlekit! Beetlekit!" the Clan called out the kit's new name. Mousepelt noticed Limptail take one last glare at her and Ravenclaw as he entered the warrior's den. Viperfang followed after before glaring at Mousepelt and Ravenclaw.
Mousepelt could care less about the vengeful cats. Ravenclaw had returned and that's all Mousepelt cared about. At the time, it felt like all the omens Mousepelt had seen, were over.
