Chapter 6
It had only been a moon since her birth and already Vinekit was getting in to trouble. She was almost dog food when she wondered off. Amberheart and Mousepelt almost risked their lives to save the little kit. Mousepelt was stuck in the medicine den with an injured leg and paw. Luckily, Coldeyes made them better so she didn't have to stay in camp the whole time. She was still instructed to see Coldeyes to check her paw.
Vinekit was scolded for leaving the camp without permission. But every cat was impressed with her energy and sense of adventure. Vinekit was going to be an interesting apprentice for whoever had her. Silverkit, Midnightkit, and Ravenkit were full of energy, but they were more than happy to stay in the nursery.
"Why go out there when prey just dies to come to us?" Silverkit asked one day.
"Because it's no fun just sitting around and waiting for food to come," Vinekit answered, flicking her small stubby tail. Everyone thought it was tucked under her body when she was born, but Vinekit just had a short stubby grey tail. "I want to catch my own rat!"
"That's a while away, little one," Yellowstone purred.
"But I want to go now!" Vinekit complained.
Mousepelt remembered how badly she always wanted to go to the forest as a kittypet. Just to know what it was like to be wild. Ravenclaw was a grouchy warrior back then. Mousepelt back then wouldn't have guessed she'd fall in love with him. Her then went back to the fact that Ravenclaw was with Twolegs.
She looked over to Ravenkit, who was batting at a beetle as it scuttled around in the grass. His amber eyes were wide with wonder at the little bug and Mousepelt got an idea. She trotted over to the elder's den to see Ratdung sharing tongues with Spottedfur while Ashpaw and Moonpaw were making their nests.
"Mousepelt, can we please go hunting?" Ashpaw begged. His paws were wet from the moss and Moonpaw was soaking wet.
"Moonpaw, why are you completely wet?" Mousepelt asked, ignoring the tortoise shell she-cat's brother.
"When we were soaking up the moss I fell in the lake and Smoothpelt and Ashpaw had to drag me out." Moonpaw explained embarrassed.
"Where are Morningpaw, Quakepaw, and Tramplepaw?" Mousepelt asked.
"Having their assessment." Ashpaw answered.
"Really?" Mousepelt immediately picked her ears up. She hoped Morningpaw would do well. Limptail hadn't been a good mentor, but she was a well to do warrior. The golden tabby was getting most of her training from her brothers and the other warriors that actually cared. Even Snaketooth and Brokenjaw seemed to give her the training she needed.
"Go ask your mentors if you can go hunting," Mousepelt finally answered Ashpaw's question, "but don't get your hopes up, if the other apprentices are having their assessment then their mentors probably don't want you in the forest. I'll take over from here."
"Thanks Mousepelt!" both apprentices mewed and bolted out the den.
"Is there another reason why you're here, Mousepelt?" Ratdung asked.
"You guys have lived with the warrior code for a while now right?" Mousepelt asked, tapping the moss with her paw.
"I didn't get these scars from nothing," Spottedfur answered.
"Then do you know if it's possible to change the name of a warrior?" Mousepelt went to Pinepelt's nest.
Ratdung and Spottedfur shared a look before looking back at Mousepelt. "It's possible," Ratdung answered, "why do you ask?"
"Well, I was just thinking," Mousepelt searched for the right words, "that is Ravenclaw does return, we should rename Ravenkit to Beetlekit."
"Beetlekit?" Spottedfur repeated.
"Yeah, because he likes playing with bugs and he doesn't resemble a raven at all." Mousepelt explained.
"We see your point," Ratdung nodded, "but if Ravenclaw doesn't return, not saying he won't, but if he doesn't, Ravenkit will remain Ravenkit in memory of Ravenclaw."
