Chapter 22

Mousepelt buried her catch and gave thanks to StarClan. Spotpaw watched from a short distance, but didn't look interested in what his mentor was doing. The warrior would notice his paws itching to battle train. There was more to being a warrior than battle training. Mousepelt was beginning to get worried about the apprentice.

Finally, Mousepelt and Spotpaw went back to hunting. Spotpaw had caught a black bird, a adder, and a mouse. Mousepelt was going to make him catch one more thing before dismissing him to his duties. She stopped when the scent of ThunderClan was in the air. She glared up in the trees but decided not to say anything. If Amberheart wanted to spy, she should be in SkyClan.

A rat was chewing on a nut not far off and Spotpaw crouched down low. He pelted off to the rat and snagged the rat in his paws. He pinned it down and threw the death blow on its neck before it could send out a warning call.

"Good job, Spotpaw," Mousepelt mewed, "return your catches to the camp and do whatever the Clan needs you to do; get new bedding for the elders, give them some fresh-kill, we'll continue training tomorrow."

"I don't want to go back yet!" Spotpaw snapped. "I want to battle train!"

"Spotpaw, the Clan needs to be fed first," Mousepelt explained as calmly as she could, "battle training comes later."

"What if WindClan attacks?" Spotpaw growled. "I need to know what to do!"

"Spotpaw, we'll battle train later, now get back to camp!" Mousepelt snapped.

Spotpaw glared at his mentor through his red eyes as he sheathed and unsheathed his claws. He then picked his ears up and shot his red eyes at a nearby bush. "Someone's here!"  he hissed.

Mousepelt tensed and looked to the bush. ThunderClan mingled with ShadowClan and Mousepelt was about to scare off anyone who walked out. The holly prickles shuffled as the cream and white pelt of Navi walked out in the open. Mousepelt relaxed, but kept her guard, this she-cat wasn't going to hurt her again.

"I thought I smelled something awful!" Spotpaw growled.

"What do you want Navi?" Mousepelt grumbled, not looking her in her green eyes.

"Jumbledstar wants you to go to the Gathering tonight," Navi answered, "Spotpaw, you have to stay."

"What, why?" The white apprentice hissed.

"Jumbledstar already invited Stripepaw and Sirenpaw," Navi answered, "sorry, but you're going to have to stay here tonight."

"This is so unfair!" Spotpaw pelted off to camp.

"Life's unfair!" Navi shot after the young apprentice. "Teach that apprentice of yours patience!"  Navi turned to her kit before running off to camp. Mousepelt let out a sigh before looking around, still smelling the ThunderClan scent.

Mousepelt padded to the island, close to Ravenclaw. Jumbledstar was speaking to Stoneheart and Vinetail while Silversun walked close together with Stripepaw. Sirenpaw spoke excitingly to Crazyfeather. Yellowstone and Blackclaw walked side by side in the back with Coldeyes and Docilepaw.

Mousepelt could already smell WindClan, RiverClan, and ThunderClan. ShadowClan jumped on the tree bridge and headed on to the island, where the first three Clans waited. Sirenpaw and Stripepaw made their way to the other apprentices. Jumbledstar made his way to the leaders while Stoneheart made his way to the deputies.

Mudpelt looked as if he was back to normal. Same uncaring look of disinterest. Larkfeather looked prouder and stronger, she wasn't pathetic and weak anymore. Tumblefoot greeted Stoneheart, but didn't speak. He just sat down on the tree root and wrapped his tail around his paws.

Mousepelt then turned her attention to the medicine cats. Docilepaw was happily speaking to Cinderfoot, Longpaw, Willowvines, and it looked like Lilywhisker had taken an apprentice. He was long haired grey with silver eyes. His fluffy tail swishing as he listened to the other apprentices.

Mousepelt noticed Amberheart sharing tongues with Foxtail and the brown speckled warrior decided to leave them alone. SkyClan hadn't arrived yet, so there was no point in talking about Flightpaw yet.

Finally, SkyClan came in to the clearing. Flightpaw looked much bigger now and she padded close to Lionstar. Gingerlily came after them, her ears lowered and tired eyes. The sandy leader made his way to the Great Oak and started the Gathering.

Mousepelt was surprised to hear nothing new-that was bad- was shared. Bluepaw, Pinkpaw, and Mossypaw were now Bluelake, Pinkfur, and Mossyleaf. Longpaw was Longleg. Lilywhisker's apprentice was Featherpaw. Tawnyfur was expecting Ravencall's kits. New apprentices were given to RiverClan, WindClan, and SkyClan. Flightpaw was now Flightwing. There was nothing any cat could worry about. But that's what made Mousepelt nervous. What was being planned in the darkest area of the forest?
