Chapter 8
Whatever was said at the Gathering, Mousepaw wasn't listening, or remembered. She wrapped her tail around herself as she laid in her lonely bed of moss. The apprentices had allowed her inside, but didn't sleep near her. Frightpaw's bedding was not far from Goldenpaw's and she didn't want him to move after what he did to defend himself.
Mousepaw ignored the chill and drifted off to sleep.
She soon found herself in a starry area of land. A rabbit jumped out of nowhere in front of Mousepaw. She got in the hunting position and pounced on her prey, killing it with the biting blow to the neck.
"You're a very talented warrior, young one," A purr sounded. Mousepaw spun around to see a tortoise shell she-cat with green eyes. Her pelt was starry and Mousepaw could practically see right through her.
"Who are you?" Mousepaw dropped her catch.
"My name is Tawnypelt," the she-cat answered, "I was once a ShadowClan warrior."
"Once?" Mousepaw repeated.
"Welcome to StarClan," Tawnypelt mewed, "I hunt the stars with our ancestors."
"StarClan?" Mousepaw tilted her head. "Now I know I'm dreaming!"
"You are, but StarClan walks in your dreams, mostly when there's something you must know and just the fact that I can speak to you means you do believe in StarClan, at least a little." Tawnypelt purred seeing the quizzical look on Mousepaw's face.
"So, what do you want with me?" Mousepaw sat, wrapping her tail around her paws and looking away from Tawnypelt.
"Mousepaw, please understand, we chose you because you're the best warrior to represent ShadowClan in destroying Silversol." Tawnypelt explained circling the short brown she-cat.
"Why does Silversol want to kill ThunderClan and ShadowClan kits and queens?" Mousepaw pressed.
"It's not just ShadowClan and ThunderClan," Tawnypelt answered sadly, "but she does it out of revenge, there was once a ShadowClan warrior by the name of Duskwing, he died and joined a cold hearted leader named Darkstar. Duskwing killed Darkstar whipping him from existence, Silversol was to be his mate, but because Duskwing saved our lives, Silversol could never have his kits. Now she kills kits and queens of every clan, every chance she gets, you, my little warrior are the only one to save ShadowClan."
"What about WindClan and RiverClan?" Mousepaw asked.
"It takes two deaths to kill a cat, whether it be a StarClan cat or Dark Forest cat." Tawnypelt explained. "Skystar, SkyClan's leader killed him once, but was murdered by the dark warrior, thankfully, Duskwing saw the error of his ways and killed Darkstar for good, unfortunately, we did not see Silversol coming, until Riverstar, RiverClan's leader, died."
Mousepaw lowered her head. The Dark Forest cats were brutal. She then remembered what had happened to Frightpaw's mother.
"Now go young one," Tawnypelt and the whole area began to fade, "remember, ShadowClan needs you."
"Wake up!" Mousepaw jolted awake to see Ravenclaw hovering above her with and intense glare. She realized she wasn't in the apprentice's den. Instead, Mousepaw was next to the fresh-kill pile with a rabbit her paws.
"What happened?" Mousepaw asked getting to her paws.
"You were sleep walking!" Goldenpaw laughed from the apprentice's den with the other apprentices. Smoothpaw and Crazypaw purred while Frightpaw looked concerned.
"What?" Mousepaw stood up her fur bristling and hot with embarrassment.
"You were also sneaking fresh-kill as well I see!" Ravenclaw snapped.
"I wasn't stealing this!" Mousepaw turned on the tom.
"Ravenclaw!" Frogstump yowled walking up between the two cats. "Mousepaw, when was the last time you ate?"
Mousepaw was silent. She couldn't remember a good meal.
"Jumbledstar, we need to wait for Mousepaw to eat before going to the Daylight Gathering!" the medicine cat called to the leader, who was standing at the entrance.
"Very well," the leader nodded, "we are early anyway, apprentices, warriors eat!"
"Way to go, kittypet!" Goldenpaw sneered lying down.
"You ruin everything!" Smoothpaw laid next to her.
"What they said!" Crazypaw growled scratching his ear with his hind leg.
"Back off!" Frightpaw shot making the apprentices jump. "It's not her fault she hasn't been eating, Ravenclaw shouldn't be making her work so much!"
Mousepaw lowered her head and unsheathed her claws. She didn't need help! Especially from a tom who seemed to want repay her for her help. Ravenclaw huffed and went to go eat with Limptail, Snaketooth, and Stoneheart. The brown apprentice didn't even want to eat anymore.
"Can I go to the Daylight Gathering?" Tramplekit, the grey and black tom kit, mewled. He was Brokenjaw and Silvertongue's kit. His sister, Morningkit, and brother Quakekit, looking to their mother expectingly.
"No, not yet," Silvertongue meowed, "you're too young to go, wait until your apprentices."
"But that's gonna take forever!" Morningkit wailed.
"Oh, hush up!" The siver tabby queen shot. "It's only a moon away!"
"Speaking of which, I believe two of our apprentices have been apprentices for too long!" Jumbledstar jumped up to his high ledge and called a clan meeting. "I, Jumbledstar, leader of ShadowClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as a warrior in their turn. Smoothpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do!" Smoothpaw puffed his chest out proudly.
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Smoothpaw, from this moment you will be known as Smoothpelt. StarClan honors your courage and hard work, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ShadowClan. Goldenpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do!" Goldenpaw purred.
"Then by the powers of, I give your warrior name. Goldenpaw, from this moment you will be known as Goldenpelt. StarClan honors your strengths, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ShadowClan." Jumbledstar then jumped down from the High Ledge to rest his muzzle on Smoothpelt's head, who licked his leader's shoulder. They did the same with Goldenpelt.
"Smoothpelt, Goldenpelt!" The Clan called out the new names of the new warriors. Mousepaw dug her claws in to the dirt. She worked just as hard to impress anyone in the Clan, but she was completely ignored. She then got to her paws and stormed to Ravenclaw.
"What's this Daylight Gathering?" She demanded.
"Can you show a little joy for your Clanmates?" Ravenclaw looked angrily down at the apprentice.
"What is the Daylight Gathering?" She hissed.
"Since you're so impatient!" Ravenclaw spat. "It's a Gathering held in the morning where the Clans get together to train, it's held only on the moon the Clans came together for something called the Great Journey!"
When ShadowClan arrived all the Clans were gathered and speaking to each other like one whole clan. Why couldn't it be like this every time? The apprentices broke out to different sections while Mousepaw sat down and watched Frightpaw be dragged off to see a RiverClan apprentice. Ravenclaw stepped up beside her glaring around the clearing.
Finally, Amberpaw appeared with a muddy colored she-cate, Mousepaw assumed was Amberpaw's mentor. Mousepaw began to walk away, she was not in the mood to see Amberpaw.
"Where do you think you're going?" Ravenclaw snatched his apprentice by the scruff of her neck. "You're battle training with Amberpaw!"
"Is everything alright, Ravenclaw?" The muddy she-cat asked.
"Fine, my apprentice is ready!" Ravenclaw shot.
Mousepaw glared at Amberpaw, who looked shocked at the hostility as Mousepaw prepared herself.
She thinks she's better than you... A voice whispered in Mousepaw's ear. She had it good as a kittypet... Why should you suffer when she does nothing and you do as you're told?
Mousepaw unsheathed her claws and bared her teeth. Amberpaw then looked at Mousepaw, eyes full of fear.
"Mousepaw, retract your claws," Ravenclaw ordered, "you're only training not-"
"I've had it with you!" Mousepaw pounced at the golden cat before anyone could react. Mousepaw began raking her claws across the pretty cats face. Amberpaw began kicking at Mousepaw's belly, but the brown she-cat just began snapping her jaws at her neck.
"Mousepaw!" Frightpaw cried out.
"That's enough!" Ravenclaw shouted more worried than angry.
"I hate you!" Mousepaw wailed before shooting off to the forest.
"Wait Mousepaw!" Amberpaw cried.
Mousepaw could smell Ravenclaw, Frightpaw, and Amberpaw chasing after her, but Mousepaw wanted to be as far from Amberpaw as possible.
That's when Mousepaw was brought down by something heavy. She found herself pinned down by Amberpaw.
"What's gotten in to you?" Amberpaw demanded. "You used to be fun!"
"That's before I knew the real you!" Mousepaw bit at the golden cat as they rolled around on the ground. When Mousepaw was on top, Amberpaw kicked her back legs and Mousepaw was thrown over the side of a cliff. She hit the water and went limp.
A faint yowl was heard, but Mousepaw didn't care. She rather be dead than live in an unappreciated clan. The last thing she saw were two dark figures. One with blue eyes, the other with yellow and green eyes...
