Chapter 3

"Wake up," Mousepaw stirred at the familiar voice, "I said wake up, kittypet!" Mousepaw opened her eyes to see Ravenclaw look down at her with his angry glare. "We're going hunting!"

"What time is it?" Mousepaw croaked.

"Dawn, get up now!" Ravenclaw pushed Mousepaw to her side.

"I'm up! I'm up!" Mousepaw got to her paws. "Wait, dawn?" Mousepaw prickled as she looked up at the sky. The sun was shining faintly through the trees. "Why dawn?"

"We work for the clan from dusk till dawn!" Ravenclaw hissed. "You need to learn to provide for this clan, not yourself!"

That's when a faint rumbling sound was heard. Ravenclaw glared down at his apprentice as she sat down and put her paw to her stomach.

"Can I eat first?" Mousepaw begged.

"Apprentices don't eat until kits and elders are fed first!" Ravenclaw growled. "You either starve or feed the clan first!"

"Alright!" Mousepaw stood angrily. "I'll feed the Clan first!"

"Is your apprentice ready, Ravenclaw?" A skinny tom called.

"Yeah, or do you not know how to handle a simple kittypet?" A crooked jawed black and white tom purred.

"Why does he have to come?" A golden she-cat with a darker golden line down her back hissed glaring straight at Mousepaw.

"I'm a she-cat!" Mousepaw unsheathed her claws.

"Hard to believe when you're so ugly!" The she-cat hissed. The two held their glare for a moment until Ravenclaw jerked Mousepaw back viciously.

"Do you know how to control your apprentice, Brokenjaw?" Ravenclaw shot to the crooked jawed cat.

"At least mine is clan born!" Brokenjaw retorted.

"Enough you two!" Mousepaw looked up to see a dark brown tom walk up with Crazypaw close by. "Are we gonna fight or hunt?"

"Sorry, Figitfoot," The older toms mewed in unison.

"I don't want to hunt with him!" Crazypaw shot looking to Mousepaw. The brown she-cat huffed and headed out the camp.

"Mousepaw, wait!" She looked back to see the white, grey spotted that was with Frogstump. "Don't let those cats get to you, they need you and they all know it."

"Then they should start acting like it!" Mousepaw spat.

"Look just relax and try getting along with the other apprentices and your mentor," The cat turned, "they'll realize they need you sooner or later. I'm Coldeye by the way, Frogstump's apprentice, I'm the future medicine cat."

Crazypaw and Goldenpaw were whispering to each other and kept shooting glares at Mousepaw. Ravenclaw was receiving hurtful jokes about having a kittypet for an apprentice. Mousepaw was this close to shredding their ears off. It wasn't her fault she was raised as a kittypet!

Then the smell of something good hit Mousepaw's mouth. She lowered herself and headed toward the smell. She looked through the bushes to see a squirrel nibbling on an acorn. The wind was blowing toward her so the squirrel didn't scent her near. She stood as still as a rock and then pounced quickly, landing on the prey and biting its neck with the killing blow. Mousepaw trotted proudly out back to the Clan cats. They all turned and the apprentices' eyes widened.

"Beginner's luck!" Crazypaw narrowed his eyes.

"Yeah, don't look so proud just because you caught a lousy squirrel!" Goldenpaw swished her tail. They continued walking while the warriors stood gazing at the kittypet with uninterest.

"Burry your catch and remember where you left it," Ravenclaw instructed, "we will return for it when we have finished." He turned and trekked after his clanmates. Mousepaw flung the dead squirrel down on the ground. Her fur raised and her claws itched to attack. In the end, Mousepaw dug a small hole and dropped the squirrel in it.

After pushing dirt over it she followed after the cats that were leaving her behind.

After a long while of hunting, Mousepaw had caught two rats and three frogs. But there was still no praise from any of the clan cats. Not even the cat that was supposed to be her mentor.

She spotted another squirrel and began to creep toward her prey. Following the squirrel's scent was the smell was the stench of rotting flesh. Her fur prickled, but she was determined to bring back more food.

As she got closer a huge white paw stomped down on the squirrel's head and a loud crack was heard. Mousepaw froze when the squirrel was limp and dead. She raised her head, but whoever killed the squirrel was gone. Mousepaw stepped up to the squirrel as Goldenpaw and Crazypaw appeared from the bushes.

"Look who it is," Crazypaw purred, "a lone kittypet in the wild!"

"Don't you know wildcats eat kittypets?" Goldenpaw played along.

"Shut up and let me hunt!" Mousepaw spat.

"Hey don't you talk to us like that!" Crazypaw lashed. "we're better than you in every other- Ah! These fleas!" Crazypaw began chomping at his pelt. Goldenpaw just rolled her eyes and was about to speak, but then froze. Both their eyes widened. Crazypaw looked around terrified. Their pelts were bristling and they bolted off in to the bushes in fear.

Mousepaw slowly turned to see a white she-cat with two scars that crossed on the top of her muzzle. Her eyes were practically yellow with a hint of green. They seemed to pierce in to Mousepaw's heart waiting for her to bleed out.

"Who... Who are you?" Mousepaw stuttered.

"My name is Silversole," the she-cat spoke in a sadistic and cold, "and who are you?"

"M-Mousep-paw..." Mousepaw answered shaking.

"Funny, you smell like a kittypet," Silversol meowed.

"I... I used to be a k-kittypet..." Mousepaw mewed.

"ShadowClan must be getting desperate," Silversol assumed.

"Silversol!" Mousepaw turned to see Ravenclaw, Brokenjaw, Figitfoot, and the skinny tom pounce from the bushes where Goldenpaw and Crazypaw ran off. "Get lost, you're not welcomed here!" Ravenclaw ordered.

"Like this little dot?" Silversol asked. Mousepaw could feel her yellow green eyes on the back of her neck.

"You can take her if you want!" Brokenjaw suggested.

"Now, now, wouldn't your medicine cat be upset?" Silversol let out an unamused purr.

"How... Did you know that?" The skinny tom's eyes widened.

"I know everything about ShadowClan and how one of your ancestors killed Darkstar." Silversol went around Mousepaw to stand before her. "Why don't you come with me little one? At least I'll give you the respect you deserve."

Mousepaw's eyes widened and her legs shook. Would she praise her for the catches she made? Would she never call her a kittypet?

"Mousepaw!" Ravenclaw yowled. "Get away from her this instant!"

"She doesn't have to listen to you!" Silversol shot a glare to the black tom. "She can make her own decisions!"

Mousepaw... A faint voice whispered in the brown she-cat's ear. Don't go with her... Return with Ravenclaw...

Mousepaw looked from the white she-cat to Ravenclaw. She slowly slipped past Silversol and went to stand behind the warriors.

"Fool." Silversol hissed before vanishing in a Gus of black smoke.
