Selection

Ravenpaws claws sunk into the ground nervously. He knew that he would be heading to his almost certain death soon. The black tom glanced at their leader, Stoneriver.

His blue eyes narrowed and the apprentice let out a low growl. Hollowpaw glanced at Ravenpaw. The deputy gave Ravenpaw the look that told him to shut up... Or face punishment.

Ravenpaws mind swirled. He wasn't ready to die, but he was going to in the games anyway.

"Stay in line!" Stoneriver barked at the cats. The RiverClan cats approached the island. It was dusk, the sun cast an eerie blood like glow onto it. Quickly, Stoneriver ordered the cats to swim to the island. As it would be quicker, and he and Hollowpaw had to meet with the others about the games.

Ravenpaw slowed his pace and started to walk beside Nettlepaw, one of the prettiest she-cats in RiverClan. In his opinion at least. "Everything will be alright," he mewed softly to her. Her wide eyes softened slightly.

"Thank you, Ravenpaw," she said softly, a slight purr creeping into her voice. He brushed his black tail against her cream coloured flank. Slowly, he nodded goodbye and crept slowing into the water. Ravenpaw could feel his ears growing warm. His paws brushed the rock bed as he worked his muscles in the water. They where at the island after a long and not to mention cold, swim.

Ravenpaw shook himself dry and walked into the small island clearing. The leaders climbed up to their branches. Blizzardstar sat the highest. His amber eyes scanned the snow dusted clearing. The black tom slowly walked towards the spot where RiverClan was to sit.

Ravenpaw scanned the other cats. Snowfeather sat at the base of the ancient tree, along with Frostwing. He slowly crept up to Nettlepaw. He licked her ear and sat beside the pretty she-cat.

"I don't want you to leave Ravenpaw," she mewed, her voice held a slight tremor in it.

"I'll come back," he mewed, knowing that what he was saying was not going to happen. He knew that he was going to die in the arena.

"O-okay," she mewed softly, than her soft gaze traveled up to Blizzardstar.

"Cats of all clans, we have gathered you here for the selection!" He mewed triumphantly. The dark forest cats grinned widely, their sharp teeth showing. The evil, white tom looked to Frostwing. The she-cat cleared her throat.

"Now as you all know the games are you remind the clans of the hard-ship they have gone through." Her voice sounded warm and motherly. Like she was teaching a new-born kit a new trick. "We will draw four names from each clan, a female and male hunter as well as two apprentices. The winner of the games can either choose to leave the clans forever, or join the dark forest cats." She finished and sat back onto her spot.

"The selection of names will begin with ThunderClan" he mewed. "A symbol has been imprinted on a leaf with mud. This symbol represents who you are, and your leaders already know this symbol. If you are selected, you are to precede with my clan to our camp. There you will undergo some training and than," he grinned, "the games will begin," he mewed. "The hunters will be selected from first," Blizzardstar nodded to Frozenthunder, who leapt down from the tree to a small indent in the ground. The leaves where already in place.

He dipped his paw into the first pile of leaves. "Robinflight!" His voice rang out like a death sentence. Ravenpaw saw a light grey she-cat walk out of the crowd. She sat to the edge of the great tree. His paw dipped into the pool of leaves beside it. Snagging one he looked at it before calling out, "And Falconwing!"

Frozenthunder slowly walked over to what Ravenpaw assumed was the pile for apprentices. He saw two lowly leafs in the bowl of dirt.

"Aspenpaw!" Frozenthunder called out. A brown she-cat padded out of the crowd. He sat beside Robinflight rapping his tail around his feet. He trembled. The paw dipped into another bowl. It only had one leaf in it this time. "Applepaw!" He called and a ginger tom stepped out of the crowd.

The same happened for WindClan. Rosewind called out the names this time. She drew out the names menacingly. Soon, the tributes doubled. The two apprentices where Rabbitpaw and Sparrowpaw. And the hunters were Owlswoop and Skyshade.

Pineshadow leapt down from the tree. He went over to the dips in the earth that he would be drawing names from. Greymoon was the first to be called. Than Sprucespark. He was followed by Amberpaw and Stormpaw.

Finally Stoneriver came down from the ancient tree. His paw dipped into the small sea of leaves and pulled out one. "Cinderfeather!" He called out. She stepped out of the crowd bravely. Her fear didn't show. Ravenpaw let out a small tremble.

"Wolfspirit!" Stoneriver called out next. Ravenpaw looked at Nettlepaw, hoping that she wouldn't get called.

Stoneriver leisurely walked over to the next two dips. He hooked the single leaf that rested in the male apprentices dirt bowl. "Ravenpaw!" He called out. His name being called sent shivers down his spine. He knew it was coming. But he didn't know what to expect of it. Slowly, Ravenpaw walked towards the area where the others where sitting. He sat as Stoneriver pulled out the next name.

"Streampaw!" He called out. Ravenpaw let out a sigh of relief. Nettlepaw was safe, for the moment at least. He glanced behind him as RiverClan started to leave. Nettlepaw was still sitting there. It was like she was unable to tear her eyes away from him. He looked back, not wanting to see the sadness in her eyes as he left the clan. Most likely for good.
