Fear
Sparrowpaw shifted nervously. The selection for the games was tonight. This meant that two apprentices and hunters, one male, one female where to be chosen to fight to the death in the dream arena. Rosewind had told the apprentices that the victor got to choose whether to leave the clans forever, with no one or join the dark forest cats.
The WindClan apprentices had been bursting with nervous energy, no one wanted to get picked. But the saddest part of all was that there was only one male apprentice in WindClan, Rabbitpaw. But Sparrowpaw wouldn't bare to see him leave.
Trying to get rid of worry, the apprentices had been sent out hunting together. The thoughts of worry and doubt were pushed away as the apprentices scented a rabbit on the wind blown moor.
"I'm going to catch it first!" Birdpaw declared, the blue eyed apprentice sprinting across the snowy grass.
"Not if I can help it!" Rabbitpaw bolted after the black she-cat, gaining speed.
"Bee-brain!" Sparrowpaw taunted as she sprinted beside Rabbitpaw, catching up with slight difficulty. She nudged him with her shoulder, almost causing the furry white tom to trip. He turned his head and rolled his eyes, a slight purr rumbling in his throat. Birdpaw decreased her pace and ran beside them. The snow started to get deeper as the rabbit they had scented came into view. It was sitting on the top of a hill, munching at its lunch. It's unintelligent eyes glanced around lazily at the evanescent landscape.
The group of tight knit apprentices slowed and slid easily over the icy snow. Rabbitpaw nodded to Birdpaw, making her go in the direction opposite to him. Sparrowpaw followed suit and went to the left side of the small hill. Rabbitpaw made the first move. He sprinted up the hill and hissed at the rabbit, sending it directly in between Birdpaw and Sparrowpaw.
Sparrowpaw looked at Birdpaw, half expecting the black apprentice to know what to do. Quickly, the black she-cat dashed after the rabbit, her claws sinking into the soft snow. She leapt, and landed on the creature. Birdpaw struggled to clamp her jaws around its neck. It all happened in a moment.
Sparrowpaw dashed after the rabbit. She couldn't keep up. It was just to fast. Birdpaw was flung off as the rabbit turned a sharp corner. She landed with a hard thump on the snow. Birdpaw got up groggily and shook her head. The damned rabbit was already speeding away, kicking up snow as it bounded across the snow covered grass.
Sparrowpaw sprinted over to Birdpaw, she noticed that the moon had started to rise in the east. "Are you okay?" She asked, nudging her friend with her nose.
The ginger apprentice watched as Birdpaw got up and shook her head. "That hurt," she groaned, shaking her pelt to clear the snow. Rabbitpaw approached the two she-cats.
"Is everyone alright?" He asked, tilting his head to the side. Sparrowpaw nodded and began to describe the rambunctious event that had just occurred.
The furry white tom laughed when Sparrowpaw got to the part about Birdpaw riding the rabbit. "I've never heard of a cat doing that before," he chuckled and continue to listen.
"We'd better get back," Birdpaw mewed when Sparrowpaw had finished talking. The sun had started to sink below the horizon, plunging the world into dusk. Rabbitpaw nodded solemnly and started the trek back to camp.
The walk was silent except the gentle rasp of the wind. Every cat knew that tonight was going to be the day where Windclan had two less apprentices to call on.
When they got back to camp Rosewind already had the hunters lined up. The nursing mothers cowered in their dens, rapping a protective tail around their kits.
"Alright," Rosewinds voice echoed throughout the small camp. The apprentices scrambled to the back of the orderly line of cats. Everyone was stiff and cold as the leaf-bare air.
"We will be heading towards the island, for a gathering," She explained, "if your name is called, you exit with Blizzardstar. If not, than you exit with me and perhaps your new deputy. I expect every single hunter and apprentice to be on their best behaviour," Rosewind finished and led their way to the island.
