"Poppyfrost, can I talk to you alone?" Berrynose asked the tortoiseshell she-cat as he approached her.
"Okay," Poppyfrost mewed. She guessed Berrynose would want to talk about Honeyfern, who had died three moons ago. The two cats began to walk out of the Stone Hollow. Casting a glance at Berrynose, Poppyfrost could see a slight sadness in his eyes.
Berrynose paused and Poppyfrost stopped beside him. She stared at the cream-furred warrior, waiting for him to ask her what he wanted to. Berrynose settled himself onto the ground, shuffling his paws slightly. "I was wondering. . . wondering if you maybe wanted to be my mate?" he asked, his voice full of anxiety.
"But Honeyfern practically just died!" Poppyfrost said, surprised. "You wouldn't want to be my mate." The tortoiseshell did have a slight crush on the cream tom.
"Poppyfrost, I love you," Berrynose said. "Do you want to be my mate or not?"
"I will," Poppyfrost mewed as she gave a smile. "I will admit that I do love you."
"Thanks," Berrynose purred. I wonder how Honeyfern feels now that Berrynose and I are mates? Poppyfrost wondered. I still think Berrynose loves Honeyfern though. I'll just try and cheer him up by being his mate.
"I hope you're okay. You know, after Honeyfern dying. . ."
"I'm over her death now," Berrynose replied, sounding cheerful. "I love you now and you should know that I always will."
"Okay," Poppyfrost said. "I will always love you, too." Her mew turned into a purr.
"Do you want to go hunting before returning to the camp?" Berrynose questioned.
"Sure," Poppyfrost replied, and at once the two newly-made mates began to walk away, twining their tails.
